UN Tourism has further strengthened its partnership with Bulgaria with an official visit and hosting key meetings in the Balkan nation with its political leadership and also welcoming football legend and Ballon d'Or winner and a philanthropist Hristo Stoichkov as its new ambassador.
The UN Tourism official visit, led by Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, was welcomed by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov who joind the high-level meetings with the Ministries of Tourism and Foreign Affairs.
These meetings focused on how UN Tourism can support the further growth and diversification of Bulgaria's tourism sector, most notably through the development of cultural, culinary and wine tourism.
In an official meeting with President Rumen Radev, both parties focused on supporting tourism education and growing investment into the sector, with UN Tourism committed to publishing guidelines for international investors.
Lauding Bulgaria for its commitment to responsible and inclusive growth, Pololikashvili said: "It has established itself as one of Europe's most exciting tourism destinations. With UN Tourism, its focus on education and training and growing investments into the sector will serve as the solid foundations for long-term sustainable growth, both in urban centres as well as rural communities."
In Sofia, UN Tourism officially appointed Stoichkov its newest Special Ambassador for Sports Tourism.
Over the course of his career, the Bulgarian soccer legend had represented Barcelona Football Club, won the Golden Boot at the 1994 World Cup and played in Italy, Saudi Arabia and the USA. Since retiring from the game, he has worked tirelessly as a philanthropist and a supporter of youth empowerment through sport.
As a Special Ambassador, Stoichkov will help further advance UN Tourism's work on growing sports tourism as a driver of inclusive opportunity and economic diversification. He will also bring his influence and insights into UN Tourism's work to promote tourism education in schools everywhere and make the sector a key pillar of opportunity for global youth.
Also in Sofia, the UN Tourism leadership met Miroslav Borshosh, Minister of Tourism of Bulgaria, to sign a Letter of Intent for future cooperation.
With Bulgaria having entered into the Schengen Zone at the start of 2025, with an expected upturn in arrivals, the two parties will work to grow and direct investments into Bulgaria's tourism sector, a key priority for UN Tourism and its Member States both in Europe and globally.
The discussions explored the potential for an Investment Forum to be held in Bulgaria, recognizing its status as a regional leader.
The enhanced collaboration will also focus on another key priority for the sector, promoting education and continued training in the sector.
At the same time, the growing importance of spa tourism was discussed, recognizing the natural resources of the country, said Pololikashvili.
Finally, with a focus on supporting the diversification and rural development, the two parties agreed that the 9th edition of the UN Tourism Global Wine Tourism Conference will be held in the city of Plovdiv, with the date to be confirmed.

Taremi Grounded, Inter Without Key Forward

TDT | Manama Inter Milan have been dealt an unexpected blow ahead of their Club World Cup campaign, with forward Mehdi Taremi stranded in Iran due to suspended air travel following regional conflict involving Israel. The 32-year-old, who featured in Iran's recent 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory over North Korea in Tehran, was unable to board a flight out of the country after Iranian authorities closed airspace in response to Israeli airstrikes on Friday. A club source confirmed to Reuters that the striker remains grounded, with Italian outlets reporting that he is set to miss the tournament altogether. Timing Adds to Inter's Challenge Taremi's absence is a significant setback for Inter, who are set to kick off their campaign on Tuesday against Mexican side Monterrey in Pasadena. The Nerazzurri will also face Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds and Argentina's River Plate in subsequent Group B matches hosted in Seattle. Though not a regular starter this season, Taremi featured in 43 matches across all competitions for Inter, offering valuable depth and experience in attack. His unavailability narrows manager Simone Inzaghi's options as the Italian champions prepare to navigate a competitive group in the newly expanded 32-team format. External Crisis, Internal Impact The situation highlights the challenges global conflicts can pose for international sports events. Airspace restrictions over Iran, imposed for safety reasons, have halted outbound commercial flights and left several travelers stranded — including athletes like Taremi caught between national duty and club commitments. There has been no official comment yet from Iran's football federation or Inter regarding whether an alternative travel arrangement might still be possible, but with the opening fixture just days away, the clock is ticking. Club World Cup Underway Inter's Group B fixtures form part of the wider Club World Cup schedule unfolding across U.S. cities throughout June. The competition features top teams from each confederation and acts as a high-profile prelude to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. For Inter, the aim remains progression beyond the group stage, but they'll now have to do it without one of their most experienced international campaigners.

Messi Denied, Miami Held, Al Ahly Impress

TDT | Manama Star-studded Club World Cup opener ends in stalemate amid fervent Miami crowd Lionel Messi came within inches of a dream start to Inter Miami's Club World Cup campaign, but the Argentine icon and his side were ultimately held to a goalless draw by Egyptian giants Al Ahly in front of nearly 61,000 fans at Hard Rock Stadium. Despite dominating much of the second half and seeing Messi clip the crossbar with virtually the final kick of the game, Inter Miami couldn't find a breakthrough in the tournament's Group A curtain-raiser. Al Ahly, buoyed by a massive contingent of supporters, created early chances and missed a first-half penalty in a game that ebbed and flowed but ultimately lacked finishing precision. Messi Magic Falls Just Short On a humid Florida evening, the crowd — 60,927 strong — came primarily to see Messi. The World Cup winner didn't disappoint in terms of involvement, orchestrating play and producing two moments of real threat. First, a trademark free-kick bent around the wall clipped the outside of the post. Later, a perfectly measured cross nearly brought a breakthrough, only for Fafa Picault's header to be clawed away by Mohamed El Shenawy. But the biggest chance came at the death. With time almost up, Messi curled a fierce effort from just outside the box, forcing El Shenawy into a brilliant fingertip save that nudged the ball onto the crossbar. Al Ahly Stand Tall Al Ahly showed little fear of the occasion. Driven by passionate support — far outnumbering Miami's fans in both voice and presence — they started brighter. Their best chance came from the penalty spot after Zizo was brought down in the box, but Trezeguet's weak effort was saved comfortably by Oscar Ustari. The African champions were disciplined defensively, frustrating Miami's midfield and closing down Messi with every touch, though they faded slightly in the second half as the MLS side gained control. High Stakes, Big Stage This edition of the Club World Cup marks a new era, with an expanded 32-team format and matches played across the United States one year ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Miami's near-capacity turnout offered an encouraging sign for tournament organisers, easing concerns about global engagement and local interest. For Inter Miami, the draw keeps them alive in Group A, but increases the pressure heading into Thursday's clash with FC Porto in Atlanta. Al Ahly, meanwhile, face Brazilian side Palmeiras in New York.
