Fisherman catches prehistoric-looking alligator gar in 4-hour ‘epic battle'

An angler may have broken a world record after reeling in a massive prehistoric-looking fish.
Art Weston, a Kentucky resident, went to Lake Livingston, Texas, to catch an alligator gar with the help of an expert guide and fisherman, Captain Kirk Kirkland.
"It was an epic battle, lasting nearly 4 hours, and covering over 2 miles of lake," Weston told Fox News Digital.
The massive fish weighed 153 pounds and stretched 7 feet 3 inches long.
It was caught on "The Garship Enterprise" boat.
Alligator gars are a unique species of fish.
They're often referred to as "living fossils"; records for the creatures have been discovered dating back almost 100 million years, as Fox News Digital previously reported.
Weston said the fish was swimming 8-12 feet below the boat and kept resting on the bottom for 10 minutes at a time — making the catch difficult.
"Kirk and I have practiced light line before, so we were prepared with 6-foot steel leaders, the max length allowed, and a sturdy j-hook," said Weston.
"The drag on the reel was set very low to allow the fish to take the line out of the reel without breaking it."
"This is a situation where you can't rely on the force you can apply to the fish, but [rather], just put enough pressure on them to keep swimming and tire themselves out," said Weston.
He said that in such a situation, multiple things can go wrong — such as lines getting twisted, obstacles snagging the line and the fish spitting out the bait.
Weston said he predicts the fish will break a record for the largest worldwide freshwater fish ever caught on ultra-light tackle, a 2-pound test — and the 6th largest if you include saltwater species.
"It will be a pending 2-pound line class world record by the [International Game Fish Association]," said Weston.
There was probably a less than 1% chance of catching the massive fish on the line, he also said.
Last May, Weston and Kirkland accidently reeled in a 200-pound alligator snapping turtle while trying to catch a massive fish.
"The only consolation was a very unusual and unplanned catch: a 200-plus-pound alligator snapping turtle," Weston said at the time.
Fox News Digital reached out to the International Game Fish Association, headquartered in Florida, for comment.

House bipartisan bill directs NSA to create 'AI security playbook' amid Chinese tech race

FIRST ON FOX – Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Ill., is introducing a new bill Thursday imploring the National Security Administration (NSA) to develop an "AI security playbook" to stay ahead of threats from China and other foreign adversaries. The bill, dubbed the "Advanced AI Security Readiness Act," directs the NSA's Artificial Intelligence Security Center to develop an "AI Security Playbook to address vulnerabilities, threat detection, cyber and physical security strategies, and contingency plans for highly sensitive AI systems." It is co-sponsored by House Select Committee on China Chairman Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., Ranking Member Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., and Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J. LaHood, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee and the House Select Committee on China, told Fox News Digital that the legislative proposal, if passed, would be the first time Congress codifies a "multi-prong approach to ensure that the U.S. remains ahead in the advanced technology race against the CCP." The new bill follows another bipartisan legislative proposal, the "Chip Security Act," which he introduced in late May. That proposal aims to improve export control mechanisms – including for chips and high-capacity chip manufacturing – protect covered AI technologies with a focus on cybersecurity, and limit outbound investment to firms directly tied to the Chinese Community Party or China's People's Liberation Army. And I don't say that to scare people or my constituents, but they have a plan to replace the United States, and they're working on it every single day. And that entails stealing data and infiltrating our systems," LaHood told Fox News Digital. "AI is the next frontier on that. We lead the world in technology. We lead the world when it comes to AI. But what this bill will do will again make sure that things are done the right way and the correct way, and that we're protecting our assets and promoting the current technology that we have in our country." Read On The Fox News App LaHood pointed to evidence uncovered by the committee that he said shows the CCP's DeepSeek used illegal distillation techniques to steal insights from U.S. AI models to accelerate their own technology development. He also pointed to how China allegedly smuggled AI chips through Singapore intermediaries to circumvent U.S. export controls on the technology. "As we look at, 'How do we win the strategic competition?' I think most experts would say we're ahead in AI right now against China, but not by much. It is a short lead," LaHood told Fox News Digital. He said he is confident his legislative proposals will put the U.S. "in the best position to protect our assets here and make sure that we're not shipping things that shouldn't go to AI that allow them to win the AI race in China." "Whoever wins this race in the future, it's going to be critical to future warfare capabilities, to, obviously, cybersecurity," LaHood continued. "And then, whoever wins the AI competition is going to yield really unwavering economic influence in the future. And so we're aggressive in this bill in terms of targeting those areas where we need to protect our AI and our companies here in the United States, both on the commercial side and on the government side, to put us in the best position possible." The "Advanced AI Security Readiness Act" calls on the NSA to develop a playbook that identifies vulnerabilities in AI data centers and developers producing sensitive AI technologies with an emphasis on unique "threat vectors" that do not typically arise, or are less severe, in the context of conventional information technology systems." The bill says the NSA must develop "core insights" in how advanced AI systems are being trained to identify potential interferences and must develop strategies to "detect, prevent and respond to cyber threats by threat actors targeting covered AI technologies." Amazon Announces $20B Investment In Rural Pennsylvania For Ai Data Centers The bill calls on the NSA to "identify levels of security, if any, that would require substantial involvement" by the U.S. government "in the development or oversight of highly advanced AI systems." It cites a "hypothetical initiative to build covered AI technology systems in a highly secure government environment" with certain protocols in place, such as personnel vetting and security clearance processes, to mitigate "insider threats." Though not directly related, the new bill is being introduced a week after FBI Director Kash Patel sounded the alarm on how the CCP continues to deploy operatives and researchers to "infiltrate" U.S. institutions. Patel laid out the risk in announcing that two Chinese nationals were charged with smuggling a potential bioweapon into the U.S. LaHood said that case further highlights "the level of penetration and sophistication that the CCP will engage in," but he added that his bill focuses on putting a "protective layer" on U.S. AI tech and "restricting outbound investment to China." He pointed to how the CCP also has bought up farmland around strategic U.S. national security locations, particularly in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. "If everything was an even playing field, and we were all abiding by the same rules and standards and ethical guidelines, I have no doubt the U.S. would win [the AI race], but China has a tendency and a history of playing by a different set of rules and standards," LaHood said. "They cheat, they steal, they take our intellectual property. Not just my opinion, that's been factually laid out, you know, in many different instances. And that's the reason why we need to have a bill like this." The bill comes as the Trump administration has been pushing to bolster artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States, and major tech companies, including Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, OpenAI, Oracle and others, have made major investments in constructing AI-focused data centers and enhancing U.S. cloud computing. Last week, Amazon announced a $20 billion investment in constructing AI data centers in rural Pennsylvania. It followed a similar $10 billion investment in North Carolina. In late May, the NSA's Artificial Intelligence Security Center released "joint guidance" on the "risks and best practices in AI data security." The recommendations include implementing methods to secure the data used in AI-based systems, "such as employing digital signatures to authenticate trusted revisions, tracking data provenance, and leveraging trusted infrastructure." Embarking on a low-calorie diet could potentially lead to negative mental health, researchers in Toronto, Canada, have revealed. A new study, published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health, investigated how the adoption of restrictive diets could instigate depressive symptoms. Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers analyzed nearly 29,000 adults who reported their dietary habits and also completed a mental health questionnaire. Nearly 8% of these adults reported depressive symptoms. Compared to those who did not follow a specific diet, those who stuck to a calorie-restrictive diet — including overweight individuals — saw an increase in depressive symptom severity, the study found. People who followed a nutrient-restricted diet saw a larger increase in symptoms, while men who followed any diet reportedly showed "higher somatic symptom scores" compared to non-dieters. The researchers concluded that there are "potential implications of widely followed diets on depressive symptoms, and a need for tailored dietary recommendations based on BMI and sex." Judith S. Beck, PhD, president of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Pennsylvania, reacted to these findings in an interview with Fox News Digital. The expert, who was not involved in the research, noted that it only showed an association between low-calorie diets and depression. "This is an important distinction, [because] correlation does not equal causation, and having a few depressive symptoms does not mean you have the condition of depression," she said. Beck noted that depression and negative emotions can also be caused by multiple cognitive, emotional or behavioral factors that are "more directly associated with depressive symptoms." Certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco in New York City commented that most Americans would benefit from losing weight, as 70% of Americans are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This can be done by reducing the intake of sugary drinks and processed foods, and learning how to incorporate more whole foods like lean protein, vegetables, fruits and nuts, recommended DeCicco, who also was not involved in the study. The nutritionist also warned against following fad diets. "It's not sustainable or healthy to follow these trends because, most often, they are not educating the public on the type of nutrients you need to function mentally and physically, which is why it doesn't surprise me that people can experience depressive and cognitive-affective symptoms when losing weight." The quality of calories "matters dramatically," DeCicco noted. "While weight loss is about calories in and calories out, it's also about the type of calories and what we need for fuel, protection against disease, and mental and physical satisfaction," she said. "Food has the power to help us or harm us, and if we're not eating certain foods known to promote mental well-being, we will definitely suffer from cognitive impairment and unstable mood." As an example, cutting out fats because they're high in calories — like salmon, avocado, olive oil and nuts — also cuts out nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation, prevent disease and improve cognition, mood and brain health, DeCicco noted. "If someone wants to lose weight but also has a health history of cognitive decline or is diagnosed with depression, it is even more important to emphasize the food groups mentioned above," DeCicco added. Beck echoed the importance of eating in a "very healthy way," while also recommending that people consider cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
