Voice of America Frantically Rehires Axed Farsi-Speaking Employees
The Trump administration has reversed course on yet another of its early decisions. Following Israel's attack on Iran, they're calling back several Farsi-speaking Voice of America employees. According to a new CNN report, several dozen employees who had been placed on paid administrative leave in March have been called back to work. The move, which CNN's chief media analyst Brian Stelter believes suggests that the Trump administration wants to bolster programming in Iran, comes after Israel launched multiple airstrikes against Iran. Prior to the Trump administration's cutbacks in March, Voice of America produced over four hours of Persian-language programming for audiences in Iran on a daily basis. According to the Voice of America website, this content 'confronts the disinformation and censorship efforts of the Iranian regime and enhances U.S. efforts to speak directly to the Iranian people and the global Persian-speaking diaspora.' While videos have been continuously uploaded to the VOA Farsi YouTube channel since March, they have increased in frequency since Israel's airstrikes, with the account uploading nine videos since Thursday. One of the videos features a Persian-speaking spokesperson from the Israel Defense Forces explaining the Israeli government's justification for the attacks, while others show footage of the immediate aftermath of some of Israel's airstrikes on Iran. Critics were quick to use the news to highlight the importance of VOA in American diplomacy. Brett Bruen, a top Obama-era diplomat, tweeted, 'Turns out not having a channel to communicate with the Iranian people was a pretty bad idea.' Bruen made sure to tag Kari Lake, a senior adviser for the U.S. Agency for Global Media, on his post. Retired Washington Post editor Robert McCartney also weighed in, posting on X, 'So Trump and Musk gleefully dismissed Farsi speakers at Voice of America's Iran service, and now in crisis realize they need them back. Obvious lesson here, but MAGA and GOP will doubtless ignore it.' Patsy Widakuswara, a journalist who is suing the Trump administration as part of the Save VOA campaign, shared a statement on X that read, 'VOA's role in providing independent, factual and authoritative news has been proven throughout countless times of crisis. But after months off the air, we've already lost a lot of audience and credibility. They should bring us all back so we can respond to breaking news in all parts of the world.'

Army deletes video of DC parade tanks with 'Hang Fauci & Bill Gates' graffiti
A now-deleted Army video of tanks being loaded onto a train to Washington, D.C., to appear in the massive June 14 military parade for the Army's 250th anniversary showed a graffitied message spray-painted on the side of the train car – "Hang Fauci & Bill Gates." The video, posted to the Army's X account on Saturday, has since disappeared. It showed an M1A2 Abrams – a 70-ton battle tank – rolling onto a train car at Fort Cavazos in Texas. The death threat to Fauci and Gates – two people who have drawn the ire of President Donald Trump's MAGA base – was painted on a train car marked DODX, property of the Defense Department. Steve Warren, an Army spokesperson, said the Army has no plans to investigate. "We removed the post once notified of graffiti on the train that didn't align with Army values," he said. "We are excited to celebrate 250 years of service to the nation next week." Dr. Anthony Fauci, who led the government's response to COVID during Trump's first term, and Bill Gates, the billionaire Microsoft founder, are frequent targets of criticism from Republicans and Trump's supporters. Fauci has said he received a deluge of death threats and harassment since he became a magnet for right-wing outrage as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during the Pandemic, making him the public face of many pandemic social distancing policies and the COVID vaccine. Republicans have accused him of funding the Chinese government to create the virus and conservative firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said he "belongs in prison." "I still think deep down that there's a possibility that somebody's going to kill me," Fauci told USA TODAY in a 2024 interview. Former President Joe Biden issued a preemptive pardon for Fauci before he left office, anticipating that Trump would seek revenge against the doctor. Days into his second term, Trump pulled federal funding for Fauci's security detail. Gates, a Democratic Party donor who contributed millions to Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, also frequently pops up in some conspiracy theories. He has funded vaccination campaigns in poor countries, fueling online speculation that his vaccines contain microchips to track people. The tank in the video was one of 28 tanks and more than two dozen armored vehicles making the weeks-long, cross-country journey to appear in the Army's 250th anniversary parade in the nation's capital on June 14. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said on May 29 she is still "concerned" about road damage. The parade has faced scrutiny for conspicuously falling on President Donald Trump's birthday – also June 14. Trump pushed for a military parade during this first term but canceled his plans after pushback from Democrats and local politicians over the cost and logistics. This time around, the parade is estimated to cost as much as $40 million. Around 7,000 soldiers will also arrive in Washington for the occasion, which will also feature historic warplanes, helicopters, parachutists, and a bevy of events and entertainment. Most Americans Don't Want Their Tax Dollars Spent On Trump's Military Parade
As many Americans struggle to make ends meet — including military families and veterans who have found themselves fired thanks to this year's massive cuts to the federal government — a new poll shows that 2 in 3 adults are opposed to spending taxpayer dollars on Saturday's military birthday soiree for President Donald Trump. According to a survey conducted between May and June by the NBC News Decision Desk, 64% of American adults said they were opposed to the use of government funds for the military parade that Trump has ordered to roll through Washington, D.C., on Saturday. A celebration to ring in the Army's 250th anniversary had been in the works since 2023, but it wasn't until after Trump officially returned to the White House that a parade down Constitution Avenue — replete with a presidential viewing stand en route and a ceremony near the White House where parachuting troops will deliver him a flag — was added to the program. According to the poll, 88% of Democrats and 72% of independents oppose using government funds for the parade. Among Republicans, 65% supported using government funds for the event. Trump's most diehard supporters in the 'Make America Great Again' movement overwhelmingly approved of using taxpayer dollars, but there was some wiggle room, with the approval rating sitting at 75%. Among those Republicans who don't consider themselves MAGA adherents, the support for the spending spree was lower, at 56%. Roughly 20,000 people were surveyed. Trump has been unabashed in his excitement for the parade and the ensuing legion of tanks, marching soldiers and helicopters for some time. He has twice been denied a military parade due to the huge cost and concerns about damaging the streets of Washington, D.C. At least $16 million for street damage is priced into the $45 million estimated cost for the parade. Democratic lawmakers, like Iraq war veteran and Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, have said the Army would be better celebrated, and its servicemembers better honored, if the government would allot tens of millions of dollars to tuition reimbursement or child care for military families. 'There are lots of ways to celebrate the Army's birthday without blowing it all on a parade,' Duckworth said during a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week.
