Aryan Aviation operations suspended for Char Dham Yatra after copter crash
Mumbai, Jun 15 (PTI) The government has suspended the operations of Aryan Aviation for the Char Dham Yatra with immediate effect following the accident of one of the firm's helicopters in the Kedarnath region on Sunday morning, according to an official release.
The helicopter took off from Guptkashi at 05:10 am and landed at Shri Kedarnath Ji Helipad at 05:18 am. It departed again at 05:19 am for Guptkashi and is reported to have crashed near Gaurikund between 05:30-05:45 am, the Civil Aviation Ministry said.
There were five passengers, one infant, and one crew member on board.
Earlier the Uttarakhand government announced suspension of charter and shuttle helicopter operations in the region on June 15 and 16 as a safety precaution.
Preliminary indications suggest that the probable cause may be Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT), with the helicopter reportedly airborne despite poor visibility and extensive clouding at the valley entry area, the ministry said.
The exact cause will be determined through a detailed investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), it added. It said that the DGCA has been directed by the Civil Aviation Ministry to immediately post officers from airworthiness, safety, and operations to actively oversee all helicopter activity in the Kedarnath Valley, and rigorously review the functioning of the UCADA command-and-control room.
Two helicopters belonging to TransBharat Aviation - VT-TBC with Yogesh Grewal as pilot in command and VT-TBF with ( Jitender Harjai as PIC were found to have been airborne under similar unsuitable weather conditions.
Accordingly, the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months, the ministry said.
Seven people were killed as a helicopter carrying them from the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand crashed early Sunday in the forests of Gaurikund amid poor visibility.

Bike Taxis Come To Halt In Karnataka As High Court Ban Kicks In
Bengaluru: Bike taxi services operated by app-based aggregators came to a standstill in Karnataka on Monday following the High Court's directive to suspend operations. Complying with the order, bike taxi options were removed from ride-hailing apps such as Ola, Uber and Rapido. Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy confirmed the development, stating that the companies must abide by the court's decision. "Three months ago, the court ruled that bike taxis are illegal. It initially gave six weeks, and then another six weeks on request. Now that 12 weeks have passed, the aggregators must follow the High Court order," Mr Reddy told PTI. On Friday, a division bench of the Karnataka High Court refused to stay an earlier single-judge order that suspended bike taxi services in the state. The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice Sreenivas Harish Kumar, was hearing appeals filed by Uber India Systems Pvt Ltd, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd (which operates Ola), and Roppen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd (which operates Rapido), among others. The companies had challenged the April 2 ruling that directed them to halt bike taxi services within six weeks. The deadline was later extended till June 15. The single judge had observed that such services cannot operate unless the state government notifies specific rules and guidelines under the Motor Vehicles Act. The division bench noted that it would have considered granting a stay on the order if the state had indicated progress in drafting the rules. However, the government stated that it had taken a policy decision not to frame such regulations, leading the court to deny relief to the aggregators. The bench issued notices to the state government and other respondents, setting the next hearing for June 24. Meanwhile, Ola Uber Drivers and Owners' Association president Tanveer Pasha demanded strict enforcement of the order. "The government should seize bikes operating illegally and take legal action against violators," he said. Rapido, in a statement, acknowledged the court's decision and expressed concern for its riders. "Even though we are not the initiating party in the ongoing case, we have remained engaged as a responsible stakeholder. This is a challenging time for our captains-many of whom rely on bike taxis as their primary income source," it said. The company reiterated its commitment to working with the government and Transport Department to develop a regulatory framework that is "compliant, sustainable, and future-ready." "Our priority is to protect the interests of gig workers while ensuring commuter safety. We are actively pursuing all avenues to support our captains and hope our dialogue with the government leads to a viable policy, as seen in several other states and union territories," Rapido added. Uber also confirmed the suspension of its bike taxi services from June 16. "This decision affects thousands of riders and drivers who depend on bike taxis daily. We will continue to engage with the Government of Karnataka to help develop a progressive policy that ensures safe, accessible, and affordable mobility for all," the company said. The police have arrested five people including Sonam (25) and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha (20) for orchestrating and executing Raja's murder. All the five arrested accused are in the Meghalaya police's custody, and an SIT is probing the case. Raja's elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi said that the family suspects the involvement of more people, hinting at Sonam's parents, brother Govind and her sister-in-law, in the murder of his younger brother. 'We want a narco-analysis test on Sonam, her parents, brother Govind and sister-in-law. New videos related to the murder are surfacing one after the other. We believe more people might be involved in my younger brother's killing," he said as quoted by news agency PTI. Vipin further demanded that people who posted these videos on social media also be questioned and asked why they had not released the footage earlier. Meanwhile, Govind attended the 13-day ritual feast of Raja, although the Raghuvanshi family said that he had not been invited. He had also taken part in Raja's post-death ritual in Ujjain on June 13. 'I am here to seek forgiveness. If anyone suspects us, we are asking to be investigated. We stand with Raja Raghuvanshi's family," he said. Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case Raja and Sonam, who got married on May 11 in Indore, went to Meghalaya on their honeymoon. He was found dead in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills district on June 2, 10 days after the couple went missing, while a search continued for Sonam. She emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away from the crime spot, on June 9. The murder took a sensational turn when Raghuvanshi's wife, Sonam, was held by Meghalaya Police along with her three alleged aides, Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (20). The other three accused, Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi, were initially suspected to be hired killers, but the police later found they were friends of Kushwaha. The fresh revelations have pointed to a well-orchestrated conspiracy behind Raja's murder. Raj Kushwaha, who was allegedly in a relationship with Sonam Raghuvanshi, has been identified as the mastermind behind Raja's murder with Sonam actively involved in the plot. According to the police probing the case, the conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore, shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11. East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem revealed that the plot began in February, when the group was in Indore. The plan revolved around making Sonam disappear, but later turned into a murder conspiracy. After Raja and Sonam were married on May 11, they visited the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam. A few days later, the accused also reached the area. According to police, the group initially planned to kill Raja in Guwahati, but later shifted the plan to Shillong.

Assam begins drive to bulldoze over 600 homes in Goalpara district
The Assam government on Monday began its drive to demolish the homes of 667 families, the majority of them belonging to Bengali-origin Muslims, in an anti-encroachment drive in the Goalpara district. Goalpara District Commissioner Khanindra Choudhury told Scroll that 45% of the homes on an allegedly encroached land in the Hasila Beel area were razed on Monday. The demolition drive will continue on Tuesday to clear the remaining structures, he added. 'There was no resistance from the encroachers and no untoward incident has been reported so far,' PTI quoted Choudhury as saying. The official claimed that the district administration had served eviction notices to the villagers in 2023 and 2024, instructing them to vacate the 'wetland area'. 'We again served them notices on Friday and asked them to clear their houses by Monday morning,' PTI quoted Choudhury as saying. Many residents left the village with their belongings, while the remaining families have requested that the district administration rehabilitate them. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in Assam in 2016, more than 10,620 families – the majority of them Muslim – have been ousted from government land, according to data provided by the state revenue and disaster management department in August. In September, the Goalpara district administration carried out a demolition drive in which 450 families, or about 2,000 persons, were evicted. The families were illegally occupying 55 hectares of the Bandarmatha Reserve Forest, the newspaper quoted unidentified officials as saying. The evictions in Goalpara were carried out in line with a High Court order. This had come less than two weeks after two men were shot dead by the police amid violent protests during an eviction drive in Moregaon. On September 9, the district authorities bulldozed nearly 240 homes, the majority of them belonging to Bengali-origin Muslims from Morigaon district. The residents had built their homes in the low-lying area over several decades. Three days later, on September 12, the officials returned and gave them an ultimatum to vacate the land in two hours. This led to a violent clash between the residents and the officials, during which two men were shot dead by the police. Thirty-three persons, including 22 government and police officers, were also injured in the clash.
