‘Lot of ‘poisonous characters' in that team': AB de Villiers recalls ‘bittersweet' Delhi Daredevils IPL stint
South Africa legend AB de Villiers has had an enjoyable fortnight cheering on his country and his favoured IPL franchise ending their long title droughts. While the Proteas downed Australia to lift the ICC World Test Championship mace at Lord's, de Villiers was in attendance at the home of cricket, 11 days after he was present during the IPL 2025 final when his former team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, won their first title in 17 years.
However, in a recent interview, the former South Africa captain recounted a few unpleasant memories from back in time, during his first three IPL seasons with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).
de Villiers recalled the toxicity of the environment that left him with bittersweet memories even as he shared the dressing room with some of his childhood heroes.
'I'd hate to give you names-burning people, you know-but the Delhi Daredevils were in shambles. There were a lot of poisonous characters in that team,' he told cricket.com.
'There were lots of legends, which makes it a bittersweet memory for me. I still remember those times fondly. Some of the highlights of my life and career came during that stint-especially spending time with guys like Glenn McGrath and Daniel Vettori. These were my heroes growing up, and I was honestly a bit scared of them,' de Villiers added.
While the 41-year-old enjoyed the 2009 season in South Africa, playing all 15 games for 465 runs, including a century, de Villiers only tallied 13 games in total from 2008 and 2010.
'2009 was nice. I played almost the entire season in South Africa, came back, and I thought I was going to be the man. Then, all of a sudden, I wasn't playing again,' he recalled.
'It was mixed feelings. I was told I would be retained, and then the next minute, I saw myself in the auction. I didn't even know what had happened. So many weird things went on.'
de Villiers was later roped in by RCB during the 2011 auction and would emerge as one of their greatest batting superstars alongside Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle. Aggregating 4511 runs in 145 innings, de Villiers remains as RCB's second-highest run-getter, behind Kohli.
'The day I walked into RCB, I felt like they wanted me to play every game. I was so surprised. They just went, 'You're the man. You're going to grow here. You're going to become a great player with us-you're part of the family.' Done and dusted.'

Australian Selectors Urged To Drop Bowling Big 4 As Ashes Beckons: "Can No Longer Be..."
Australia great Mitchell Johnson launched a scathing attack on former teammates and the bowling big four -- Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon. His remarks came hours after Australia lost the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. In his column for The West Australian, Johnson suggested that the quartet of Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon should no longer be seen as a 'lock', urging the selectors for a rejig if needed. "Our successful 'big four' bowling attack of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon can't be taken for granted as a lock going forward either," wrote Johnson. Johnson specifically criticised Hazlewood for prioritising IPL over the WTC final after the pacer extended his stay to help RCB lift their first title earlier this month. "We've seen concerns about Hazlewood's fitness in recent years, and his decision to prioritise returning to the delayed Indian Premier League over his national team preparations raised eyebrows. Lyon didn't look his best on day three either," he added. Johnson also questioned whether the senior players are sticking around for the Ashes this summer to get a send-off. He also urged the selectors to give chance to fringe players, who according to him are more hungrier to impress. "If veteran players are sticking around just for the Ashes as a send-off, it does beg the question of whether that's the right mindset. It's crucial that we embrace the future and build confidence in selecting our next Test players. Players on the fringe such as Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and Scott Boland, despite being 36, have a different mentality. They're eager to prove themselves every time they get a chance," he said. Johnson also questioned the selectors call to open with Marnus Labuschagne to slot in the returning Cameron Green at no. 3. Johnson defended Green's double failure, suggesting that the selectors should be questioned instead of player. With the Ashes coming up this year, Johnson urged the selectors to single down on two openers, as well as a reliable no. 3. "It's obvious Green didn't perform well - out for 4 and 0 and facing just five balls for the match. And the way he got out to Kagiso Rabada in both innings highlights that he might not be suited for that position. But the real issue stems from Marnus Labuschagne's poor form, similar to what we saw with Steve Smith moving up to open when he was struggling a bit. I'm just not a fan of these batting reshuffles to cover for lack of form. With the West Indies tour and then the Ashes coming up this summer, Australia will need to settle on not only two openers but also find a reliable No.3," Johnson added.

Big blow to BCCI's staff members ahead of England series as Indian Cricket Board decides to...
BCCI. (PIC - X) New Delhi: The stage is set for the upcoming 5-match Test series between India and England. This high-voltage series will begin with the first match at Headingley on June 20. Both the teams as well as cricket fans are eager to enjoy the thrill. Before this series, BCCI had taken a big decision. Actually, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has made changes in the daily allowances and travel policy for its employees. Under these changes, employees will now get a new daily allowance policy and some old allowances have been removed. BCCI took this big decision: BCCI has made significant changes in the daily allowances and travel policy for its employees. Under the old policy, employees used to get a daily allowance of Rs 15000 per day for short-term travel (up to four days) and Rs 10000 per day for long-term travel (such as related to IPL, WPL, or ICC events in India). Apart from this, a contingency allowance of Rs 7500 was also given. According to the new policy, the contingency allowance has been removed. Now employees will get a uniform daily allowance of Rs 10000 per day during travel. According to a BCCI source, the effective daily allowance after tax deduction will be around Rs 6,500 per day. Dues will be paid soon: Since the policy had to be changed, BCCI employees, including finance, operations and media departments, were not paid their daily allowances for IPL and WPL. However, now that the policy is ready, their dues will be paid soon. Regarding this, the source said, 'A clear policy was needed in the matter of allowances as some employees were claiming allowances despite working from Mumbai headquarters during the tournament. Now that the policy is ready, the dues will be paid soon.' Allowance will be given according to travel! IPL lasts for more than two months and ICC events also last for at least a month. In such a situation, if an employee is travelling for the entire 70 days for IPL, then he will be eligible to claim a total of Rs 7 lakh at the rate of Rs 10,000 per day. On the other hand, employees whose travel is limited during IPL will be eligible to claim only 60% of the 70-day allowance and employees who do not travel at all (such as those working in Mumbai headquarters) can claim only 40% of the 70-day allowance. How much is paid for foreign travel? Most BCCI employees are paid USD 300 per day for foreign tours. Honorary office bearers, including the president, secretary, treasurer, vice-president and joint secretary, receive a daily allowance of USD 1000 per day on foreign tours. Office bearers are paid Rs 40,000 for a one-day meeting within India and Rs 30,000 per day for a multi-day domestic work trip.
