In touch with authorities in Iran to locate missing Indian men: MEA
Tehran/New Delhi: India on Thursday said that it remains in touch with the authorities in Tehran for locating three Indian nationals who have gone missing in Iran.
"The three Indian nationals who had landed there some time ago are missing. We are in touch with the Iranian authorities to locate them, ensure their safety and security, and facilitate their eventual return home. We are in daily contact with the authorities there and are receiving good cooperation from the Iranian side. We are also in touch with the families of the missing people and extending all possible help," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
All three missing Indians hail from Punjab and have been identified as Jaspal Singh, Hushanpreet Singh and Amritpal Singh. They all went missing on May 1, shortly after landing in Tehran, authorities have informed.
"Family members of three Indian citizens have informed the Embassy of India that their relatives are missing after having travelled to Iran. The Embassy has strongly taken up this matter with the Iranian authorities and requested that the missing Indians should be urgently traced and their safety should be ensured. We are also keeping the family members regularly updated of the efforts being made by the Embassy," the Indian Embassy in Iran said in a statement on Wednesday.
According to reports, an agent in Punjab had promised the three men to send them to Australia via the Dubai-Iran route. He had reportedly also assured them that they will be provided a stay in Iran. But the trio was kidnapped soon after landing in Iran on May 1. Families of the missing men have claimed that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of Rs one crore and calls have been made from Pakistani numbers.
India has in the past issued travel Advisory for Iran, advising all Indian nationals traveling to the country to exercise due caution, maintain contact with the Embassy of India in Tehran and the Indian Consulates.

Mizoram: DRI seizes Methamphetamine tablets worth 9.72 crores in Seling; one arrested
Aizawl (Mizoram) [India], June 1 (ANI): Continuing the fight against the drug menace, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Friday seized 9.72 kg of Methamphetamine tablets from a vehicle in Seling, Mizoram, on the Aizawl-Champhai Highway (NH-6) and arrested one person, according to the official statement from Ministry of Finance. The seized tablets have an estimated value of Rs. 9.72 crore in the international illicit drug market. The officials of DRI found 10 packets containing the contraband drug concealed ingeniously in a cavity/chamber on the rear seat. According to the official, the recovered contraband drug and the vehicle have been seized, and one person has been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the contraband drug was smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar through the Zokhawthar sector of the Indo-Myanmar border. Since January 2025, DRI has seized over Rs. 72 crore worth of Methamphetamine and Heroin in Mizoram and has arrested seven persons. The NDPS Act prescribes stringent punishment to offenders, including rigorous imprisonment up to 10 years. Earlier on May 30, the Amritsar Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recovered foreign currency amounting to USD 41,400, approximately Rs. 35.40 lakh, from a passenger at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Punjab, officials said. The passenger was intercepted on Thursday (May 29) while attempting to smuggle the currency on Air India Express Flight IX 191, travelling from Amritsar to Dubai. According to a press release, the foreign currency was cleverly concealed in another bag in the main check-in baggage. Upon preliminary examination, it was found that the seized currency was unaccounted for and far exceeded the permissible limits as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. The currency was seized under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The initial investigation indicates that the accused was involved in the illegal smuggling of foreign currency for monetary gain. Further investigation is currently underway, the release said. (ANI)

"Our Criminal Justice system entering new era": Amit Shah emphasises evidence-based law and order
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 1 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Sunday, said that the country's criminal justice system is entering a new era, underlining the importance of strong forensic institutions to ensure a secure, transparent, and evidence-based framework. Amit Shah, who is on a two-day visit to West Bengal, inaugurated the new building of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) at Rajarhat in Kolkata. In his address after the inauguration, Shah said, 'The Indian government is creating a secure, transparent and evidence-based criminal justice is necessary that those who stop crime should be two steps ahead of the criminals. Our criminal justice system is entering a new era.' He further pointed out that the central government in 2020 established the first National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), way before the three new criminal laws - BNS, BNSS and BSA - came into force. He highlighted that eight such institutions have already been established nationwide, with eight more planned, emphasizing that graduates from these colleges will play a vital role in strengthening the state's law and order. 'We have extended help to every state to establish a forensic van in every district. Many states have expanded their forensic labs. We had already established the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in 2020. Sixteen institutions have been approved, eight have already been established, and the remaining eight are in process. We have already completed the creation of trained human resources. I believe the new students will contribute to our law and order,' he added. 'Our duty is to ensure that every poor person can get justice as soon as possible. I believe that we will create an environment where our people will trust the law and order of the country,' the Union Minister said, stressing the priority of delivering justice to the poor at earliest. His visit comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to North Bengal, underscoring the central leadership's sustained focus on the state. Earlier, Shah had posted on X in both English and Bengali: 'Leaving for Kolkata. Tomorrow, will inaugurate the new building of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, which will contribute immensely to strengthening the criminal justice system in West Bengal and Northeast India.' 'In the afternoon, will interact with the Karyakartas at Vijay Sankalp Karyakarta Sammelan in Kolkata. Looking forward to attending the programmes,' he added. J-K: Assam Minister Atul Bora visits Pahalgam terror attack victim Syed Adil Hussain Shah's residence
Anantnag (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 1 (ANI): Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora on Sunday visited Pahalgam terror attack victim Syed Adil Hussain Shah's residence in Pahalgam of Jammu and Kashmir and handed over a letter from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and a cheque of Rs 5 lakh as one-time financial assistance from the Government of Assam to the family. The Assam Government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh as a token of respect for the families of all 26 people killed in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Bora will also pay a courtesy call on Manoj Sinha, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, today at J&K Rajbhawan, the Assam Chief Minister's office said. Meanwhile, Sarma today said that with two more arrests, 81 'anti-nationals' are now behind bars in the Assam for sympathising with Pakistan on social media posts. The latest arrests were from Kamrup and Sonitpur districts. Sonitpur Police arrested Md Dilbar Hussain, and Kamrup Police arrested Hafizur Rahman for allegedly sympathising with Pakistan with their posts on social media. The Chief Minister said that authorities are tracking 'anti-national' social media posts and taking action. Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted a massive search operation at 15 locations in eight states, including Assam, in a Pakistan-linked espionage case. Searches were conducted at the premises of suspects linked with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) in the states of Delhi, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam and West Bengal. NIA teams have seized several electronic gadgets and sensitive financial documents, along with other incriminating materials, during the searches. These are being extensively examined for clues to the espionage racket being run by Pakistan-based operatives as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy. As per NIA investigations, the suspects targeted in the searches had connections with Pakistani operatives and acted as financial conduits for carrying out espionage activities in India. NIA had registered the case on 20th May following the arrest of an accused person who had been sharing sensitive information with PIOs since 2023 and had received funds through various conduits in India in lieu of leaking classified information related to national security. The anti-terror agency is continuing with its investigation in the case, registered under sections 61(2), 147, 148 of BNS 2023, sections 3 & 5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and section 18 of UA(P) Act 1967.
