Leslie Hall's classroom at Daviess County Middle School is decorated to intrigue students about science.
Framed pictures of telescopes, test tubes and DNA strands adorn the wall, while multiple dinosaurs are stationed around the room.
'I'm a very visual learner,' Hall said in a recent interview.
Hall, who has been with Daviess County Middle for 10 years, is receiving a wealth of other materials to help reach students, by being named a KET All Star.
KET, the state's public television station, selects a new class of All Stars every year. The group includes teachers, librarians, early childhood educators and others who work in education. The program brings the All Stars together to share ideas, provides access to KET's library of educational materials, along with training and a small annual stipend.
The purpose is to provide educators with tools, training and resources to build upon their own skills and help students succeed.
Hall, who was inspired to work at DCMS when she attended a conference at the school as a student teacher, recently attended her first meeting as part of the All Star class.
'It was amazing,' Hall said. 'The KET educational leaders are truly outstanding. What we were able to do is look at some of the resources they have,' during the visit to the KET offices in Lexington. 'There are also resources from early childhood development to adult education.'
Seventeen educators from across the state were chosen, from public schools, private schools, a college and an early childhood education center.
'The educators there are amazing, so getting to know them was rewarding,' Hall said.
Hall said she is already planning to bring KET resources into her classroom, and that she also plans to use the materials for female students who might consider science as a career.
'There's a specific program calls 'SciGirls; it's all about empowering girls to pursue STEM,' Hall said.
'I'm going to start a group of girls that desire to pursue STEM occupations,' Hall said.
In addition to using KET materials, 'I'll have women in STEM positions come in and tell them what their (career) paths looked like. I want to show them what's out there.'
Beyond that, Hall said she plans to use other KET materials to introduce her students to careers they otherwise might have considered.
'It's a wide variety' of materials, Hall said. 'What I love is our students are diverse, and have diverse interests' in what they might pursue as adults.
'Most of the resources are free,' Hall said. 'We are going to utilize the resources and do some projects.'
Being an All Star is a two-year commitment.
'Next year ... (I will) be a mentor for the new All Stars for 2026,' Hall said.

1-in-30 million gold lobster saved from all-you-can-eat New England seafood restaurant

1-in-30 million gold lobster saved from all-you-can-eat New England seafood restaurant A Rhode Island aquarium took in the crustacean after a local all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant called 'out of the blue.' Show Caption Hide Caption Rhode Island restaurants you have to try Prime dining-out season is here. It's time to catch up with friends over dinner or have a date night while the kids do homework. NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI – A lobster's extremely rare gold color saved it from the dinner plate in seafood-loving New England. How unique is a gold lobster? About 1 in 30 million, according to Mark Hall, owner of the Biomes Marine Biology Center, in Kingstown, Rhode Island. Earlier this week, the aquarium took in the crustacean after a local all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant called 'out of the blue,' Hall said. A genetic mutation gives gold lobsters their color, the National Science Foundation says. "The blue [lobster] is everybody's favorite, but there's something about the gold that really jumps out at you," Hall said. "Most people assume it's a different kind of lobster.' The rare mutation for gold lobsters isn't to be confused with orange lobsters, Hall wrote in a Facebook post. Their orange counterparts 'are slightly more common, and a darker orange color." On May 27, the Nordic seafood restaurant in Charlestown donated the lobster. Within about an hour of the restaurant calling, bartender Joel Humphries delivered it to its new home, where it's now in a tank, Hall said. Humphries happens to be a former volunteer and employee at Biomes, an education facility and hands-on aquarium, which features marine animals from Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The morning of May 29, about 50 fourth-grade students visited the aquarium. As Hall worked, he could hear the kids reacting to the marine life. They sounded impressed by the golden lobster, he recalled. In its new tank, the lobster shuffled to and fro with hefty golden claws. It looked out with two piercing black eyes, videos showed. Fact Check: Yes, Musk has an estranged trans daughter named Vivian Jenna Wilson

Claim: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has a transgender daughter. Rating: Context: Vivian Jenna Wilson, who is openly trans, is Musk's biological daughter. However, she told NBC News in July 2024 that she had not spoken to him in four years; a Teen Vogue feature story with her in March 2025 suggests they continue to be estranged from one another. For years, Snopes readers have searched our website for information on whether tech billionaire Elon Musk, known to express transphobic views, has a trans child. Posts on social media platforms such as X, Facebook and Reddit claim Musk has a trans daughter named Vivian Jenna Wilson. Some posts say she "won't speak to him" or that she has "cut ties" with her father. In May 2025, news outlets reported that Wilson, Musk's "estranged daughter," recently made her modeling debut for queer-owned clothing brand Wildfang. Social media users also spread a video of Wilson at the season 10 premiere for "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" and claimed she is Musk's estranged trans child. The claim that Wilson is Musk's biological child and that she is openly trans is true. Wilson's mother is Musk's ex-wife Justine Musk, née Justine Wilson. Vivian Jenna Wilson, a 20-year-old college student, maintains a public social media presence and has shared posts about her LGBTQ+ identities, including her bisexuality. Thus, we rate this claim true. (Wilson also did, in fact, model for Wildfang; sales of a T-shirt she designed for the clothing brand will go to LGBTQ+ rights group The Trevor Project. In addition, she really did show off her runway walk at the "All Stars" premiere event, per a video from Acid Betty, one of the contestants; the clip shared widely on social media appears to be from entertainment outlet Page Six.) Vivian Wilson has publicly stated that she no longer maintains a relationship with Musk. In addition to regularly referencing their lack of a relationship on social media, she told NBC News in July 2024 that she had not spoken to him in four years. That outlet reported: Wilson said that she hadn't spoken to Musk in about four years and that she refused to be defined by him. "I would like to emphasize one thing: I am an adult. I am 20 years old. I am not a child," she said. "My life should be defined by my own choices." February 2025 social media posts by Wilson suggested that they have not reconciled, as does a March 2025 Teen Vogue cover story on Wilson which calls her "estranged" from Musk. Wilson and Musk did not return requests for comment. We will update this report if that changes. Based on his public comments, Musk's anti-trans views have intensified over time. In 2020, he posted on X that he "supports trans but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare." In 2024, he said he was moving two of his companies — the rocket firm SpaceX and the social media site X — out of California because of a new law that prevents schools from requiring staff to notify parents when their child changes their gender identity. Around the same time, Musk said in an interview that people who promote gender-affirming care to minors should go to prison (see 2:07:30). Musk has been a leading figure in Trump's presidential administration amid its efforts to erase trans people from government websites and pass anti-trans policies. Wilson has described herself as a bisexual trans woman on social media. For instance, on Threads on Feb. 19, 2025, she wrote: "I've officially made it as a bi transwoman, I just got my first comment calling me an 'autogynephile,'" referencing a controversial, widely debunked theory among anti-trans people that some trans women are trans due to erotic interest in being a woman. Her accounts on Instagram and Threads are verified, which means she has provided government-issued photo ID to prove her identity to Meta, the sites' parent company. Her bios include a transgender flag emoji and her pronouns. She has also discussed her trans identity and the fact that she's Musk's biological child on TikTok, using the username @vivllainous. For example, in TikTok videos, she has dismissed claims that she was "groomed" or "tricked" into being trans. (She has reposted content from that TikTok account on her verified Instagram account, thus verifying the TikTok profile's authenticity.) In the July 2024 interview with NBC News, she said she came out twice — once as gay in eighth grade and a second time as transgender when she was 16. Reputable news outlets, including The Associated Press, highlighted her gender identity in 2022 — when those sources reported she sought court approval to change her legal name and receive a new birth certificate. According to the AP, she filed the petition the day after turning 18 and she "listed gender identity and an apparent dislike of her father" as reasons to change her name. "I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form," she wrote on the petition. A California judge granted Wilson's request to legally go by Vivian Jenna Wilson, using her mother's maiden name. Wilson's mother, a Canadian author who was married to Musk from 2000 to 2008, uses Musk's last name. She and Musk had six children together, according to an essay she wrote that was published in Marie Claire. In mid-July 2024, Musk publicly acknowledged Wilson's trans identity using her deadname — a trans person's birth name that they no longer use after transition. Musk claimed on X that his daughter was born "gay and slightly autistic, two attributes that contribute to gender dysphoria." He also said Wilson was "not a girl." (Wilson posted a detailed refutation of Musk's words on Threads.) Those comments came shortly after conservative commentator Jordan Peterson published an interview with Musk in which they discussed medical care for trans youth (see 2:06:22) and Musk claimed he was "tricked" into signing off on gender-affirming care for Wilson. Below are Musk's comments. (He again used her deadname.) I was tricked into doing this. It wasn't explained to me that puberty blockers are actually just sterilization drugs. So, um, anyway. So I lost my son, essentially. They call it deadnaming for a reason. The reason they call it deadnaming is because your son is dead. My son [deadname] is dead. Killed by the woke mind virus. In the July 2024 interview with NBC News, Wilson refuted Musk's assertion that he was "tricked" into approving of her medical care. She also responded to his comment about her being "dead" on Threads with a reference to "RuPaul's Drag Race" star Morgan McMichaels; she made the same reference in March 2025 shortly after Musk echoed his previous comments. Contrary to Musk's claims, puberty blockers, which treat gender dysphoria by blocking hormones that lead to puberty-related changes, do not typically lead to infertility alone, according to doctors who treat trans youth. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization, opponents of gender-affirming care may use such language about puberty blockers to "create fear and disgust," though it is "medically inaccurate terminology." In Walter Isaacson's 2023 book about Musk — of which The Wall Street Journal published excerpts — Isaacson described Musk's purported response to Wilson coming out as trans, and how the experience supposedly shaped his feelings toward X, formerly Twitter. (Isaacson referred to Wilson by her deadname.) Musk's anti-woke sentiments were partly triggered by the decision of his oldest child, [deadname], then 16, to transition. "Hey, I'm transgender, and my name is now Jenna," she texted the wife of Elon's brother. "Don't tell my dad." When Musk found out, he was generally sanguine, but then Jenna became a fervent Marxist and broke off all relations with him. "She went beyond socialism to being a full communist and thinking that anyone rich is evil," he says. The rift pained him more than anything in his life since the infant death of his firstborn child Nevada. "I've made many overtures," he says, "but she doesn't want to spend time with me." He blamed it partly on the ideology he felt that Jenna imbibed at Crossroads, the progressive school she attended in Los Angeles. Twitter, he felt, had become infected by a similar mindset that suppressed right-wing and anti-establishment voices. Wilson has called Isaacson's book — which Musk promoted on X before its publication — "genuinely defamatory." She has said it misconstrued her experiences and political views and that she was never contacted to give her side. Isaacson told NBC News that he reached out to Wilson through family members. Avant-garde Health's 2025 All-Stars Report Reveals the Hospitals and Physicians Leading the Charge in Healthcare Research

The annual report honors influential researchers across 22 medical and surgical specialties whose groundbreaking work significantly impacts clinical practice and patient outcomes BOSTON, May 21, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Avant-garde Health today released the 2025 Healthcare Research All-Stars report, honoring the top 5% of America's physicians and hospitals based on the volume of their research, the quality of the journals they publish in, and their author position. Published annually, the report highlights the hospitals and physicians who, through research, are driving meaningful innovation and improvement across clinical practice, directly translating into enhanced patient outcomes, more effective treatments, and an ongoing culture of continuous improvement throughout healthcare. For 2025, Avant-garde Health evaluated published research from more than 424,000 physicians and 4,700 hospitals to determine the most influential and elite researchers and hospitals in the U.S. The report recognizes 489 hospitals and more than 21,000 physician researchers across 22 medical and surgical specialties as the top healthcare researchers in 2025. The Research All-Stars is the most comprehensive report to highlight the hospitals and physicians that are continuing to drive this progress in their respective fields and across the healthcare system each year. By honoring these individuals, we ensure that breakthroughs continue to emerge, addressing unmet medical needs, and continually raising the bar for care standards across our hospitals and health systems. "Healthcare research fundamentally changes how we approach patient care—it transforms curiosity and questions into tangible improvements in clinical outcomes," said Dr. Porter Jones, Chief Medical Officer at Avant-garde Health. "The physicians and hospitals leading this research are remarkable in their ability to challenge conventional wisdom and rigorously evaluate new treatments, technologies, and care delivery methods. Their contributions not only solve immediate healthcare challenges but set new standards that continuously elevate patient care across the entire medical community." Key findings from Avant-garde Health's Research All-Stars report: The report highlights a clear contrast in how research productivity relates to clinical workload across medical and surgical specialties. In medical specialties, a reverse relationship is observed - physicians with higher research output tend to carry lighter clinical loads, suggesting a trade-off between academic focus and patient volume. In contrast, surgical specialties show no consistent pattern - research productivity remains relatively steady regardless of clinical workload, indicating that research activities may be more seamlessly embedded within surgical practice. The report findings also uncovered significant "geographic clusters" of research excellence concentrated in coastal regions, around the Great Lakes, and within key urban hubs. The top states for physician research included California, New York, Massachusetts, and Texas. These findings carry important implications for hospitals and clinical leaders navigating today's competitive landscape—especially when it comes to recruiting and retaining top talent. According to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), the U.S. could face a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036—underscoring the growing demand for healthcare providers.
