Romesh Ranganathan opens up about turbulent childhood as dad sent to jail for fraud
Comedian Romesh Ranganathan has opened up about his teenage years as his life was turned upside down when his father went to prison.
TV presenter and comedy star Romesh Ranganathan has recently opened up about his turbulent childhood when his father was sent to prison for two years for fraud. Opening up on Radio 4's show Desert Island Disc, the comedian shared how his life was completely turned upside down due to his father's actions.
At the time of the imprisonment, Romesh was a teenager living in Crawley. He recalled that he was attending a private school at the time when he, his younger brother and mother were forced to move out of their family home and into a Bed and Breakfast.
He said: "My dad had fallen into financial trouble. What it turns out is that he'd lost his job and he was trying to make money in this sort of Sri Lankan Del Boy way, and it wasn't working out.
"And he couldn't keep up the mortgage repayments on their house. And they couldn't afford, even with my scholarship, they still couldn't afford the fees at this school I was going to."
To make matters worse, it soon became apparent that his father Ranga was having an affair, reports the Mirror. When is father disappeared for several days, Romesh recalled having to ask the "other women" where his dad was.
In doing so, Romesh found out that his father had been arrested. He explained: "She tells us that my dad had been arrested three days previously, and he had been involved in some sort of fraud case. I don't know why we'd not heard, why he'd not got in touch, but this lady knew.
"He ended up going to prison for two years, or just under two years. You know, I remember my dad being convicted and going to prison the day before my birthday.
"I think it's my 15th birthday. And so my friends are having a party for me. I just went and pretended that wasn't going on because you want some normalcy."
"Because for a while, we moved out of the house, and then a counsellor gave us a room in a bed and breakfast."
Speaking to Lauren Laverne, Romesh said that he remembered his mother crying during this period of time and that she managed to get a job as a cleaner to help provide for her sons.
When his father did come back home after being imprisoned, Romesh said they were able to patch up their relationship over time.
The 47-year-old said: "On my dad's 60th birthday, by that time, our relationship had really kind of improved. I'd had kids at that point, and I saw the way that my dad was being with my children.
"I was like, I've never seen this side of my dad, and we're in a really good place. My memory of my dad is of like a flawed tornado."

Romesh also candidly spoke about his struggles with mental health on the Radio 4 show, admitting that he had thought about taking his own life more than once and saw it as a solution to his emotional turmoil.
While he admits that he has experienced serious dark periods in this life, he has now learned how to manage those times. He touches on some of his experiences through his comedy shows, but he is aware that he needs to be careful about how far he goes.
He explained: "You got to be careful because it's triggering. I'm trying to destigmatise (mental health) but you do also have to be mindful of the fact that people may have been affected by that and then if I suddenly say I had thoughts about taking my own life and somebody's lost someone through that or they've had those moments themselves, you have to be sensitive to that and you don't always get it right but I think the rewards outweigh the risks."

The alarming statistics come just weeks after the death of schoolboy Kayden Moy, the third teenager to lose his life to youth violence in the past year. Multiple incidents involving children as young as 12 being caught with knives occurred in Edinburgh, Ayrshire, Glasgow and Lanarkshire, according to an analysis by justice magazine 1919. More than a dozen 13-year-olds - including two girls - were also subjected to positive blade searches. Teens now account for almost a third of positive knife searches across all age groups. The disturbing incidents prompted warnings of a 'youth violence epidemic' which has been repeatedly highlighted by the Record's Our Kids... Our Future campaign, launched two years ago after we reported a worrying series of attacks on teens across the country. The Scottish Government is now under intensified pressure onto act after several high-profile cases. Labour justice spokesperson Pauline McNeill said: 'These shocking figures are yet another sign that there is a youth violence epidemic emerging in Scotland. "The SNP has created a perfect storm by cutting youth work services, letting police numbers fall, and mismanaging mental health and education. "Every one of these 91 cases is very serious for our communities and potentially for those actually carrying the weapon. The Scottish Conservatives blamed 'soft-touch' sentencing for under-25s, claiming it has emboldened young offenders. Sharon Dowey MSP said: 'Knife crime has spiralled out of control. There must be meaningful punishments for those who use a knife and expanded stop-and-search powers for police to act as a deterrent. "The SNP's soft-touch attitude towards justice represents an abject dereliction of duty by John Swinney's government." Body found in search for missing hiker who vanished six days ago
Bernard Trottet, 65, was reported missing after he failed to return to a campsite in the Morvich area of the Highlands, with the alarm being raised on Sunday - sadly police have found a body while searching for Mr Trottet Police have suspended their search for a man was missing for six days after going hiking in Scotland. Tragedy struck as a body was found in the search for missing hillwalker Bernard Trottet, who disappeared six days ago in the Morvich area. The 65 year old had not been seen since he failed to return to his campsite, sparking concerns for his safety. Police Scotland confirmed on Monday June 2 that a man's body was discovered in water near Kinloch Hourn at approximately 12:55pm on, Monday, June 2. While formal identification is pending, Bernard's family has been notified of that police have found the body. Bernard was last seen on Tuesday, May 27, at Corryhully Bothy in Glenfinnan, having embarked on the notoriously difficult Cape Wrath Trail. A Police Scotland spokesperson stated: "Around 12.55pm on Monday, 2 June, 2025, the body of a man was found in the water in the Kinloch Hourn area." The spokesperson continued: "Formal identification has yet to take place, however, the family of Bernard Trottet, who was reported missing in the area, has been informed." They added that no foul play is suspected and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal, reports the Daily Record. Body found in search for Izabela Zablocka after 15 years as 'murder' arrest made
Former factory worker Izabela vanished in 2010 at the age of 30-years-old. A body has been found as part of a probe into the disappearance of Izabela Zablocka, who vanished in 2010 from Normanton, Derbyshire. The remains were discovered in a home as part of a murder investigation. The former factory worker was 30 when she vanished. A 39-year-old woman, who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder, has today been rearrested. Detective Inspector Kane Martin, who is leading the investigation, said: 'Izabela's family are at the forefront of our minds following this discovery and, whilst formal identification has not yet taken place, it is our belief that these remains do belong to Izabela, reports the Mirror. 'As such, we have spoken with Izabela's family in Poland, and they are aware. Our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time. Izabela was originally from Poland but came to work in the UK in 2009 and was living in the Normanton area at that time. Her family in Poland lost contact with her in August 2010, and despite their efforts to trace her, she has never been found. lengthy process, but we will issue updates when we are able. 'I know that reports of these findings will send shockwaves through the local community, and I understand the concern of residents. Three people, two women aged 39 and a man aged 41, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. They have been released on bail as investigations continue. The reward is available for three months and is due to expire on August 27, 2025. A missing person report was not made to Derbyshire police or other UK authorities at the time of her disappearance.
