Police combing 'vast' area of Portugal's Algarve in Madeleine McCann case

LAGOS, Portugal (Reuters) -Portuguese and German police on Tuesday launched joint searches of a "vast" area in Portugal's southern Algarve region for new evidence related to the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old British child Madeleine McCann.
Portugal's investigative Judicial Police (PJ) had said on Monday they would execute search warrants between June 2 and 6 at the behest of the public prosecutor's office in Germany's Braunschweig, which in 2022 formally identified German national Christian Brueckner as an official suspect in the case.
A source involved in the search operation said the targeted area was "vast" with police using ground-penetrating radar across several hectares. Portuguese officers were following instructions from German police under a European Investigation Order.
The scale of the searches could be the most extensive since the initial investigation was closed in 2008.
Fresh but relatively focused searches were ordered by Portuguese, British and German police of scrubland, wells and reservoirs in 2014, 2020 and 2023. None of these searches were confirmed to have yielded significant evidence.
Reuters footage showed uniformed PJ officers on a cordon on a dirt road in Atalaia - a neighbourhood of Lagos municipality - waving through unmarked vans and cars with German license plates from the city of Wiesbaden, where the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has its headquarters.
The BKA is assisting Portuguese law enforcement with "criminal procedural measures", Braunschweig prosecutors told Reuters, declining to provide further details.
The occupants of one of the German vehicles wore bucket hats, clothing with camouflage patterns and covered their faces with bandanas.
A van belonging to Portugal's Maritime Police also arrived. That force has jurisdiction over coastal areas and took part in previous searches of beaches, wells and reservoirs using specialist divers.
The road the police cordoned off is located close to a golf course and less than 1 km (0.6 miles) from the beach. The search area was close to a property that Brueckner lived in, a neighbour told Reuters in 2020, though when was unclear.
Madeleine went missing on May 3, 2007, while on holiday with her family in the Algarve town of Praia da Luz, sparking a frenzied search and gaining the attention of the world's media. She has never been found.
German police said in June 2020 that Madeleine was assumed dead and Brueckner, in his 40s, was probably responsible. He has denied responsibility.
Brueckner, a convicted child abuser and drug dealer, is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve. His sentence runs until September, meaning he is set for release unless prosecutors find enough evidence to charge him over Madeleine's disappearance.
On Jan. 17 Sky News quoted the German prosecutor investigating Madeleine's disappearance as saying there was currently no prospect of charges being brought against Brueckner.

Canada's Carney and Trump hold secret talks on trade and security, Globe and Mail reports

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney meets with First Ministers to discuss various trade and policy issues at TCU Place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada June 2, 2025. REUTERS/Nayan Sthankiya/File Photo (Reuters) -Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is secretly holding direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump to work out a framework for a trade and security agreement, the Globe and Mail reported on Thursday. The talks between the leaders and top cabinet ministers are being held discreetly to ensure a positive outcome, the report said, citing the U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra. The talks include Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the newspaper said, adding that a deal could be reached before September. "The indications that they are talking and in communications regularly is a clear indicator to me that both sides recognize the importance and the urgency of moving this forward," Hoekstra told the Globe and Mail. Carney's office declined to comment and the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. (Reporting by Anusha Shah in Bengaluru; Editing by Nia Williams)

UK far-right activist Tommy Robinson pleads not guilty to harassment

LONDON: British far-right activist Tommy Robinson pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of harassing two journalists, as dozens of supporters gathered outside the London court just days after he was freed from jail. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, 42, pleaded not guilty at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court to two counts of harassment causing fear of violence. He was given the option of a hearing at a lower court, but instead opted for a jury trial at a criminal court. The firebrand anti-Islam campaigner is accused of harassing two Daily Mail journalists, Andrew Young and Jacob Dirnhuber, via his popular X account in August 2024. The prosecutor acknowledged however that the harassment did not contain 'direct threats of violence'. Robinson, who was wearing a cream jacket and jeans, was released on bail and is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court in London on July 3. He has become a champion for far-right and anti-immigrant factions despite several run-ins with the law. On May 27 he was released after spending seven months in prison for breaching a court order barring him from repeating false allegations he had made about a Syrian refugee. On leaving jail, he thanked technology billionaire Elon Musk for his X platform and slammed the UK government in a social media video. After the hearing Thursday he was met with dozens of supporters chanting his name and cheering at the central London court. Many wore Donald Trump-inspired MEGA -- Make England Great Again -- hats, carried English flags and wore 'Free Tommy Robinson' T-shirts. The former football hooligan, who founded the far-right English Defence League in 2009, has repeatedly been convicted for public order and contempt offences. He has also been blamed for helping fuel the country's worst riots in years in 2024, which he denies.

Police: Body in Bangsar lift shaft confirmed as missing British man [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed that the body found in the elevator shaft of a partially under-construction condominium in Bangsar is that of missing British backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle. City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said a post-mortem examination showed that the cause of death was a chest injury due to a fall from height. "I can confirm that the body is that of the person who was reported missing on June 2," he said in a statement today. He said there was no evidence of foul play. The case has been classified as sudden death. "The victim's uncle positively identified the body as that of Jordan Johnson-Doyle, based on a tattoo on his body," he said. Earlier today, it was reported that police were searching for clues in the vicinity of the Lorong Maarof condo where the body was found. Policemen were also analysing closed-circuit television footage from the area. They were also looking for the deceased's personal documents. Police on Wednesday had traced Johnson-Doyle's movements to the condominium at 4pm. A 30-strong team of police personnel conducted a search of the entire building. Around 5pm, a body was discovered in a partially submerged elevator shaft in a building section that was still under construction. The body was found in an isolated area. Johnson-Doyle, a software engineer, had been backpacking across the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia for over a year, working remotely for an American tech company. He arrived in Malaysia on May 17 after visiting Vietnam and is believed to have been staying at the Robertson Residences in Bukit Bintang. His last communication was with his mother on May 26.
