OpenAI buys iPhone designer Ive's hardware startup, names him creative head
(Reuters) -OpenAI is buying Jony Ive's startup io Products in a $6.5 billion deal and will bring the chief designer of early iPhones on board as creative head to develop devices tailored for the generative artificial intelligence era.
LoveFrom, the design firm founded by Ive after leaving Apple, has been working with OpenAI for two years on generative AI devices - an area where startups have stumbled due to high computing demands, including flops such as Humane's AI Pin.
With Ive leading design, OpenAI aims to pair the technology behind its popular ChatGPT chatbot with the product design expertise that made devices such as the iPhone bestsellers.
The companies did not disclose the financial details of the deal for io, which Ive co-founded a year ago. The all-stock deal was valued at $6.5 billion based on OpenAI's $300 billion valuation, according to a source familiar with the matter.
OpenAI had previously owned a 23% stake in the company, according to the source who requested anonymity to discuss private matters.
"The products that we're using to deliver and connect us to unimaginable technology. They're decades old, yeah, and so it's just common sense to at least think surely there's something beyond these legacy products we have," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Ive said in a video posted on OpenAI's blog.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The news weighed on Apple's shares, which were down 2%.
A few companies such as Humane AI and Rabbit have tried to build bespoke devices for the AI era.
However, Humane AI, founded by a former Apple executives, struggled with its AI Pin device, which faced criticism for battery life, heat issues, limited functionality and high costs.
HP acquired Humane AI's assets, including its AI platform Cosmos, intellectual property and technical talent for $116 million, effectively discontinuing the AI Pin product.
Rabbit, on the other hand, has sold more than 100,000 of r1 devices, but reviewers have said functionality remains limited when compared with smartphones.

Apple analyst raises alarm about earnings, revenue growth
Apple analyst raises alarm about earnings, revenue growth originally appeared on TheStreet. Sorry, Apple, wrong number. The number in question comes from Counterpoint Research and it's regarding smartphones. 💵💰Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter 💰💵 The firm revised down its 2025 global smartphone shipment growth forecast to 1.9% year-on-year from 4.2% due to 'renewed uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariffs.' Growth projections at both Apple and Samsung () were reduced as cost increases were expected to be passed on to consumers, hurting demand, Counterpoint said. That's despite some easing of the tariff burden compared with earlier worst-case scenarios. In April President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on imports from countries worldwide, but days later he exempted smartphones and other electronics from those duties. "All eyes are on Apple () and Samsung because of their exposure to the US market," Counterpoint Associate Director Liz Lee said in a statement. "Although tariffs have played a role in our forecast revisions, we are also factoring in weakened demand not just in North America but across Europe and parts of Asia.' Counterpoint said Apple's iPhone 16 was the bestselling smartphone in the first quarter. More Tech Stocks: Palantir gets great news from the Pentagon Analyst has blunt words on Trump's iPhone tariff plans OpenAI teams up with legendary Apple exec This also marked the return of the iPhone series base variant to the top spot in Q1 after a two-year gap, the firm said. Apple maintained its strong presence in the top-10 list, securing five spots for the fifth consecutive March quarter. "We still expect positive 2025 shipment growth for Apple, driven by the iPhone 16 series' strong performance in Q1 2025," Lee said. In addition, Lee said that trends in creating premium positioning — a strategy to sell more expensive and more profitable versions of a product — remain supportive across emerging markets like India, Southeast Asia and the six Arab nations in the Gulf Cooperation Council.. "These are long-term tailwinds for iPhones," she said. The iPhone is Apple's biggest selling product, posting $46.8 billion in second-quarter sales, up 2% year-over-year. That's almost half the company's overall revenue of $95.4 billion. This is some potentially good news for global smartphone shipment growth in 2025 — just not for Apple. 'The bright spot this year – again – will likely be Huawei,' Associate Director Ethan Qi said. 'We are seeing an easing around sourcing bottlenecks for key components at least through the rest of the year, which should help Huawei grab substantial share in the mid-to-lower-end segments at home.' Over the past month, CNN reported, Trump has said he'd like to target two specific and very different companies — Apple and Mattel () — with tariffs aimed at their key products because of comments by their CEOs. Trump had praised Apple CEO Tim Cook when the company announced plans for $500 billion in US investment. But Cook later said he intended to shift production of iPhones bound for the US market to India from China. 'I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone's that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,' Trump posted on Truth Social late last month.'If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.' Trump later that day clarified that the tariffs would be on all imported smartphones, including those by Apple rivals like South Korea's Samsung, noting, 'Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair.' Last month Apple beat Wall Street's fiscal-second-quarter earnings expectations. The company said that it expected tariffs to add $900 million to its costs for the current quarter, but Cook said it was very difficult' to predict beyond June 'because I'm not sure what will happen with tariffs.' Needham analysts are concerned about Apple's near-term revenue and earnings growth and they downgraded the company to hold from buy without a price target. The Needham analysts say that Apple's rivals are creating new products that compete with those of the Cupertino, Calif., tech giant, TheFly and Yahoo Finance report. In addition, Needham said, Apple trades at a forward year-2026 price-to-earnings multiple of more than 26, "which looks expensive on several metrics." Needham said that for the stock to work, Apple must have the catalyst of an iPhone replacement cycle, which the firm does not foresee in the next 12 months. Until then, the $170-$180 share range is a better entry level. At last check the stock was trading above $203. If Apple decided to aggressively pursue an advertising revenue stream, it could materially accelerate its revenue and earnings growth, Needham added. The firm said that it preferred shares of Alphabet () and Amazon () to Apple. Despite Apple's premium valuation, it is growing revenue and margins the slowest among its big tech competitors. Jim Cramer says Nvidia chips could give the U.S. leverage in the trade war with China
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday said graphics chips from artificial intelligence powerhouse Nvidia could give the U.S. leverage in the ongoing trade war with China. "If Trump's wants to win this game, he may have to show his trump card, Nvidia. As I see it, the others just don't make for a good hand," he said. "You have to play with the cards you've been dealt, and for decades, our government did everything it could to encourage outsourcing to China. They left us with a pretty lousy darn hand, both Republicans and Democrats." Trade tensions between the U.S. and China have been high since President Donald Trump threatened to hit Chinese imports with sky-high tariffs. While the U.S. has agreed to a 90-day pause on the new duties, relations remain tenuous. Trump wrote in a Wednesday social media post that it is "extremely hard" to make a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, days after the White House indicated the two may speak this week. Cramer pointed to a few U.S. exports he thinks China wants — natural gas, Boeing planes, turbines for power plants and Nvidia products. He dubbed Nvidia the "one ace in our hand," but said the Trump administration doesn't want to play it. The White House announced strict regulations on Nvidia's exports to China — which CEO Jensen Huang said will cause his company to lose billions and hinder the U.S. from being a global leader in AI. Big business across the U.S. relies heavily on Chinese manufacturers, despite efforts to diversify their supply chains, Cramer lamented. He named Apple, Target, Stanley Black & Decker, Best Buy and Walmart as some prominent names scrambling to adjust to the new trade landscape. "President Trump better be a much tougher negotiator than President Xi, because right now we're so hooked on China it's almost hard to believe," Cramer said. The White House did not immediately respond to request for comment. Reddit sues Anthropic, says AI company exploited user data
Reddit Inc. sued artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, saying it has used the social media company's content without permission to train its AI models. The lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that Anthropic attempted to access Reddit data more than 100,000 times since last July. Reddit said this "unauthorized commercial use of its content" has breached its rules and exploited users' personal data without their consent. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company disagrees "with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously," The AI firm, which was started by a group of ex-OpenAI employees, has taken a public position of being more oriented toward safety and responsibility than some of its competitors. Reddit, a San Francisco-based social media platform, called Anthropic's emphasis on trust and honesty "empty marketing gimmicks." The AI startup "bills itself as the white knight of the AI industry," yet "it is anything but," Reddit said in the lawsuit. "We believe in an open internet - that doesn't mean open for commercial exploitation," Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer, said in an email. "We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content for billions of dollars without any return for redditors or respect for their privacy." In an interview, Lee said Reddit held several conversations with Anthropic in an effort to reach a licensing agreement, as it has with other AI companies such as OpenAI and Alphabet Inc.'s Google. Lee said he was optimistic about reaching a deal until recently and views the lawsuit as the company's final option to force Anthropic back to the bargaining table. Reddit would prefer to reach an agreement outside of court, Lee said, as the legal process could be lengthy. This suit is among a flurry of high-profile complaints against AI companies, including Meta Platforms Inc. and OpenAI, over claims of unauthorized use of copyrighted material to train their generative AI models. In March, a New York federal judge ruled that a copyright infringement suit brought by the New York Times and other newspapers can move forward against OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged unauthorized use of news articles to train chatbots and other AI tools. The newspapers are seeking billions of dollars in damages as compensation for unlawful use of their copyrighted content. The case is Reddit Inc. v.
