Heavy snow, rain sweep Korea with more wintry weather ahead
Close to 50 centimeters of snow fall overnight in mountainous regions of Gangwon Province
South Korea was hit by heavy rain and snow from Sunday night to Monday, causing travel disruptions and safety concerns, with more snow and rain forecast nationwide starting Tuesday morning.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heavy snow was observed overnight in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province and the Chungcheong provinces.
Monday's heavy snowfall resulted in several accidents nationwide, though no injuries or deaths have been reported as of 11 a.m. Four reports were made to officials regarding stranded vehicles, where 10 were rescued. Eleven traffic accidents were also reported and 51 additional safety reports were made to officials regarding accumulated snow.
As of 11 a.m., 53 ferry services have been canceled and 10 flights remain grounded. 13 national parks currently remain closed to the public while 13 roads have also prevented cars from passing through to prevent further safety incidents.
Much of Gangwon Province saw accumulated snowfall of 10 to 30 centimeters, while eastern parts of Gyeongggi Province, North Chungcheong Province and northern parts of North Gyeongsang Province saw 5 to 15 cm of accumulated snow.
Mountainous regions in Gangwon Province were hit the heaviest, as some regions reported up to 49.6 cm of accumulated snow as of 6 a.m., Monday. Some mountainous regions in North Gyeongsang Province also saw heavy snow, with Uljin-gun and Mungyeong receiving 24 cm and 15.6 cm, respectively.
In places where snowfall wasn't observed, rain was recorded instead, as Seoul saw 22 millimeters of rain while Hwaseong in Gyeonggi Province and Chungju in North Chungcheong Province saw around 35 mm of rain, respectively. In mountainous regions in Jeju Island, up to 82 mm of accumulated rainfall was also recorded as of 6 a.m., Monday.
As of 11 a.m., Monday, heavy snow advisories, which were focused around central parts of Korea, were lifted in most regions, excluding North Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan, which saw 1 cm of hourly snowfall as of press time. In Korea, a heavy snow advisory is issued when snowfall is expected to reach above 5 cm within 24 hours to brace for possible accidents and disruptions.
However, according to the KMA, rain clouds are expected to form and move toward the Korean peninsula again from Tuesday morning.
'As cold air moves toward the Korean peninsula and the low pressure system approaches (Korea) from the south, rain clouds are expected to form, leading to nationwide rain,' told KMA official Woo Jin-kyu during a press briefing held Sunday.
Woo added that heavy rainfall or snowfall can be expected to be focused around the central and southern parts of Korea, with mountainous regions in Gangwon Province, North Gyeongsang Province and Jeju Island expecting to see accumulated rainfall of up to 40 mm on Tuesday. Cities such as Gwangju, Daegu, Busan and Ulsan may see up to 30 mm of accumulated rainfall, while southern parts of Gyeonggi Province as well as Incheon and Seoul can expect to see accumulated rainfall ranging between 5 mm to 10 mm.
Depending on temperature conditions, rain clouds also have a chance of turning into snow clouds, as mountainous regions in Gangwon Province can expect to see up to 10 cm to 30 cm of accumulated snow while Seoul and Incheon can expect to see up to 5 cm of accumulated snowfall.
The precipitation is expected to stop as the low pressure system moves toward Kyushu, Japan on Tuesday night. However, as cold air is brought into mountainous parts of Gangwon Province by northeasterly winds, heavily hit regions can expect to see as much as 100 cm of snow until Wednesday.
Though Korea recorded of seeing warmer than average temperatures in recent days, the KMA added that a sharp drop in temperatures can also be expected starting Tuesday, as cold air moves into the peninsula from the north.
On Tuesday, morning lows are expected to range between minus 4 degrees Celsius to 4 C, while daytime temperatures are expected to range between 2 C to 9 C. Cold temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week, with winds of 55 to 70 kilometers per hour dropping wind chill temperatures significantly compared to actual temperatures.

How light is revealed: James Turrell, Salvo visit Seoul
At Pace Gallery, Turrell reveals light itself through space; at Gladstone, Salvo captures it in paintings inspired by his travels American light master James Turrell is familiar to Korean audiences through his monumental installations at Museum San in Wonju, Gangwon Province, where five of his works, created solely with light and space, offer a meditative experience. The exhibition 'The Return,' at Pace Gallery in Hannam-dong, central Seoul, shows Turrell's five recent installations, including the never-before-seen piece 'Wedgework,' made specifically for the Seoul exhibition. Turrell's exhibition, which runs through Sept. 27, is his first solo show in Seoul since 2008. 'I really wanted people to treasure light. I had hoped to try to use light itself rather than the depiction of it. We are creatures that very much respond to light, and for me, that is where the power of light resides,' Turrell told reporters Wednesday. Spanning three floors of the gallery, the exhibition features a selection of photographs and works on paper that shed light on the artist's process for his installations. Working with the materiality of light and space, Turrell is a key member of the California Light and Space Movement initiated in the 1960s. 'In the end, I am an artist and I want to pass to you a piece of light. I would like to give you this experience of light itself. Not every piece is as successful as another piece. This is how life is … I have to tell you that art has always dealt with things beyond how we normally think of something," Turrell said. Arne Glimcher, Pace's founder and chairman, first met Turrell some 60 years ago, and the gallery has represented the artist since 2002. An online reservation is required to visit the exhibition as the gallery admits only 20 people to each session to prevent congestion. Another exhibition featuring light effects unfolds at Gladstone Gallery in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul. Italian artist Salvo enjoyed using light effects in his works, some of which evoke sunsets or sunrises, as in the paintings 'Tre Colonne' and 'Forte dei Marmi.' At Gladstone, the exhibition 'Salvo, in Viaggio (Salvo Traveling)' is the Italian master's first solo show in the country. 'It is the first show of his to discuss the theme of a 'journey.' There are many works displayed to the public for the first time as well. I hope many who visit the show can enjoy their time traveling into the unique world of Salvo,' said Norma Mangione, co-founder of Archivio Salvo, at the press opening on May 29. The exhibition spans from 1988 to 2015, the year the artist died. The paintings depict both real and imagined landscapes inspired by the artist's travels across the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and Asia, featuring Salvo's visual aesthetic, characterized by expressive landscapes in vivid color. Beginning with his first trip to Afghanistan in the summer of 1969, Salvo's frequent journeys became a recurring source of inspiration. His paintings depict scenes from areas he lived in or visited, incorporating regional architectural motifs and native plant species, according to the gallery. The exhibition runs through July 12.

Early monsoon showers Jeju Island
Jeju Island saw the onset of this year's monsoon season on Thursday. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, rain clouds formed in the seas south of Jeju Island moved northeastward at 50 kilometers per hour early in the morning, bringing light rainfall of around 1 millimeter per hour to the island. Monsoon season typically begins on Jeju around June 19, but this year's rains arrived nearly a week earlier. It marks the third earliest onset of monsoon season since 1973, following the early arrivals on June 10 in 2011 and 2020. With tropical moisture enhancing cloud development, rain is expected to spread nationwide, reaching the central and southern regions Thursday before extending to the entire country by Friday. Heavy rainfall of 20 to 40 millimeters per hour is forecast to pound Jeju starting Thursday night, with similarly strong showers expected along the southern coast and around Jirisan early Friday, reaching up to 30 millimeters per hour. Central regions, including Seoul, are forecast to see 5 to 20 millimeters of rain Friday, with most precipitation likely to ease by the evening. Humid summer heat is set to linger, with temperatures in Seoul and inland areas hovering around 30 degrees Celsius until the weekend. As the monsoon season nears, shoppers in Seoul are heading to traditional markets and shopping centers to pick up rainy season essentials, including rain boots, umbrellas and raincoats.

Delta resumes Korea flights with new Incheon-Salt Lake City route
Delta Air Lines officially launched a new direct route between Incheon International Airport and US' Salt Lake City International Airport on Thursday, marking its return to the Korean market after a six-year hiatus, just ahead of the peak summer travel season. The airline also expressed its intention to further strengthen its partnership with Korean Air, its joint venture partner since 2018. 'This year marks Delta's 100th anniversary, and introducing a new route to Korea during this milestone makes the occasion even more special,' said Jeff Moomaw, vice president of Asia Pacific for Delta Air Lines, at a press conference held in central Seoul on Thursday. 'Whether traveling for business or leisure, we've worked diligently to offer a flight experience that meets the expectations of Korean passengers. From Salt Lake City, travelers can conveniently connect to 35 destinations across the US, with a 55-minute international-to-domestic transfer time on par with that of Incheon Airport.' Through its joint venture with Korean Air, Delta now connects Seoul to 14 US destinations. The expansion further solidifies Delta's position as the largest long-haul foreign carrier operating at Incheon Airport. 'Our partnership with Korean Air has grown significantly over the past eight years, and we now consider ourselves the leading joint venture across the Pacific,' said Moomaw. 'Together, we've made joint investments in digital solutions and customer experience improvements to deliver top-tier service.' For example, travelers can use either the Korean Air app or the Fly Delta app to book and check in for flights operated by both airlines, the vice president explained. Regarding the recent controversy over a potential management dispute triggered by Hoban Group's acquisition of shares in Hanjin KAL, the parent company of Korean Air, Delta Air Lines downplayed concerns, stating it views the move as 'pure investment.' 'I have good trust in Walter Cho (Korean Air Chairman). We view Hoban Construction's recent increase in its stake in Hanjin KAL as a simple investment,' said Moomaw, adding that making such investments is a very natural business activity. As of last month, Hoban Construction had acquired an 18.46 percent stake in Hanjin KAL, becoming its second-largest shareholder. While Hoban has stated the purchase was for investment purposes only, the market has speculated about a possible management rights dispute with Hanjin Group. In response, Hanjin Group transferred treasury shares of Hanjin KAL to its employee welfare fund, increasing Cho's stake to 20.79 percent, widening the gap with Hoban to 2.3 percentage points. Delta Air Lines currently holds a 14.9 percent stake in Hanjin KAL. Meanwhile, Moomaw expressed strong support of the recent Korean Air-Asiana Airlines merger. 'We are very excited about the acquisition, since our priority remains aligning the right flights with the right markets to provide the best possible service to our passengers. We are confident that our close relationship with Korean Air will help us advance that goal even further," he added.
