Underpass, flyover: PWD proposes traffic solution for two key roads

Indian Express2 days ago

To decongest two prominent stretches that see heavy traffic snarls, especially during peak hours, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to construct an underpass at Shadipur Depot in Central Delhi and an elevated corridor on Desh Bandhu Gupta Road in Northwest Delhi.
According to officials, the department has floated tenders for conducting a feasibility study, which is done to assess the traffic situation, the number of vehicles that use the stretch daily, if there are any underground and elevated Metro lines that are passing through, how much it will cost, etc.
After the feasibility study is done, officials said, the department will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) — which will include the budget and estimated time of completion — and send it to senior officials and the PWD Minister for final approval.
'Both these arterial stretches offer connectivity to the Central part of Delhi. The Shadipur Depot intersection connects the PUSA Institute on one side… and on the other side, it connects the busy Karol Bagh Market Road, Rajendra Place, Jhandewalan, Paharganj, and Ajmeri Gate… There have been a lot of complaints from the public regarding traffic on these stretches,' said a PWD official.
Officials said that as it is a busy stretch surrounded by crowded markets, coaching centres, and railway stations, it sees both pedestrian traffic and slow-moving vehicles.
The situation is similar on Desh Bandh Gupta Road, which is heavily congested throughout the day. This stretch also sees frequent movement of e-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws, which adds to traffic congestion and slows down vehicular movement.
'The tendering process will take about a month or two, after which the work will be awarded to an agency for the study… which will prepare the DPR in one year… It will also conduct a cost-benefit analysis by taking into account the economic, environmental and social costs in implementing the scheme,' said the official.

PWD to check feasibility of flyover from Sonia Vihar to Delhi-U.P. border

The Public Works Department (PWD) has started the process to engage consultants to prepare a detailed feasibility report for an elevated corridor in Sonia Vihar to Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border near Tronica City, to decongest areas in northeast Delhi, officials aware of the matter said on Saturday. The ₹500 crore elevated road will run approximately six kilometres from Nanaksar Gurudwara in Sonia Vihar. It is the first flyover project announced by the BJP government in Delhi after PWD minister Parvesh Verma took charge. Officials said that the corridor is part of a larger integrated transit corridor development and street network plan aimed at easing vehicular movement along one of the city's interstate arterial stretches at an estimated consultancy cost of ₹1.52 crore. 'The corridor witnesses significant traffic during both peak and non-peak hours… Construction of an elevated road may improve traffic flow and help reduce congestion issues, and appears constructible on the existing median/central verge without major hindrance,' the tender document reads. The consultant will be first required to involve surveys including traffic counts, topographical mapping, lane configuration assessments, and cost estimation for land acquisition and utility shifting. In the second stage, it will include detailed feasibility like 3D walk-throughs, soil investigations, environmental and heritage assessments, and multimodal integration plans with metro, BRT, and local transport networks. The consultant is then expected to prepare three alternative proposals for the corridor's alignment, assess each for viability, and present a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis, including potential savings in travel time, fuel consumption, and reduction in emissions. The consultant will also be responsible for obtaining No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and approvals from over 20 agencies including DUAC, UTTIPEC, ASI, fire department, DMRC and DDA. The project also plans to include pedestrian-friendly design with footpaths, signage, landscaping, and provisions for street furniture and universal access, along with stormwater infrastructure and integrated rainwater harvesting features. The elevated road is set to start from Nanaksar Gurudwara T-point and will cross the Wazirabad road to go further till Tronica City near UP border. The existing Sonia Viahr-Pusta Road is a 100-metre-wide, three-lane stretch that carries traffic from both directions. The new elevated road will span approximately 5,750 metres with pillars constructed on both sides to minimise land acquisition and environmental impact. Officials added that the interstate traffic going to Tronica City will be on the elevated road, while the existing road will be used by the local traffic, thereby reducing conflict points. 'Due to the large number of trees in the area, we decided that an elevated road will be the most sustainable option. We are committed to protecting Delhi's environment while addressing its infrastructure needs,' the minister had said. PWD officials and once the DPR is prepared, it will take about two years to obtaining permissions, issue a tender and finish construction.

Elevated corridor planned to free up traffic in Sonia Vihar in northeast Delhi

New Delhi: Public Works Department has initiated the process for constructing an elevated corridor spanning 5.5km along Sonia Vihar Pusta Road in northeast Delhi. The department has issued a tender for its feasibility study. Currently, the irrigation and flood control department owns this stretch. The tender seeks a consultant to conduct a comprehensive study for the corridor, which will extend from Nanaksar Gurudwara T-Point to the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border at Tronica City. Officials have noted that the route handles substantial vehicular movement throughout the day, leading to significant traffic congestion during both peak and non-peak hours and causing inconvenience to both residents and commuters. Building an elevated road is likely to alleviate the congestion problem. The corridor will also improve connectivity between Delhi and the UP border, said a senior official. PWD minister Parvesh Verma conducted a site inspection in April and announced the project. The estimated cost is Rs 500 crore. The central verge's existing space will make it possible to construct an elevated road without significant obstacles, said officials. The right-of-the-way assessment will span six kilometre. The Nanaksar T-junction marks the starting point, where six approach roads connect to Pusta Road via a service road. "There are trees present on both sides of Pusta Road, and there is a Delhi Jal Board pipeline passing underneath. All of this will be part of the feasibility study," the tender stated. The Sonia Vihar treatment plant, operated by DJB, is situated near the proposed alignment. "Widening of Pusta Road on the city side is not feasible because of space constraints. So, an elevated road will be built," the official said. This would bring relief to residents as the demand for an elevated road was long pending. Pillars will be erected on both sides of the road to leave the traffic at the ground level unaffected, he added. The construction of this elevated road will resolve congestion at several bottleneck points. Officials said PWD had been instructed to expedite all necessary procedures to start the work at the earliest. The PWD minister earlier said, "The people of Sonia Vihar have been struggling with severe traffic congestion, making this project essential. However, due to the large number of trees in the area, we have now decided to build an elevated flyover instead." Verma mentioned that he received a request from local MLA Kapil Mishra, following which the project was discussed with chief minister Rekha Gupta and received approval. Metro line 3 timeline extended to March '26

Pune: The executive committee under additional chief secretary (Finance) has approved an extension for completing the 23-km PMRDA Metro Line 3 — connecting Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar — by March 2026 on Friday. The concessionaire's request for a deadline extension was placed before the committee and has now received formal approval, PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase confirmed to TOI on Saturday. "The executive committee has cleared the proposal. The new outer limit for the Metro line's completion is March 2026," Mhase said. A similar extension has also been granted for the integrated double-deck flyover between University Chowk and E-Square junction, with the new deadline set for the end of October. Officials said over 85% of metro work was completed, but several major elements remain. Delays were attributed to pending barricading permissions—especially on VIP routes and high-traffic arterial roads—as well as slow utility shifting. These issues prevented continuous work, necessitating a timeline revision. Originally slated to open in March this year, the Metro launch was first postponed to September, then December, and now to March 2026. Trial runs, previously scheduled for September, are now expected early next year. The entire 23-km line will open in a single phase, officials said. The delay has caused growing frustration among commuters. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
