FanDuel bans bettor over heckling incident with Olympic champion Gabby Thomas
A sports bettor who heckled Olympic champion sprinter Gabby Thomas during a Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia over the weekend has been banned by the betting site FanDuel Sportsbook.
In a statement on Wednesday, FanDuel wrote it "condemns in the strongest terms abusive behavior directed towards athletes. Threatening or harassing athletes is unacceptable and has no place in sports. This customer is no longer able to wager with FanDuel."
Last weekend, Thomas finished fourth in a 100-meter race won by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. The bettor wrote in a post on social media that he "made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win." He posted a picture of his parlay that had Jefferson-Wooden winning the 100.
Thomas, the 200-meter champion at the Paris Games last summer, explained the heckling incident on X. She wrote: "This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults — anybody who enables him online is gross."
Grand Slam Track, a track league launched by Hall of Fame sprinter Michael Johnson this spring, wrote in a statement it was "conducting a full investigation into the reprehensible behavior captured on video.
"We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary. We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behavior like this will not be tolerated."
ESPN first reported the bettor had been banned by FanDuel. The Grand Slam Track season wraps up with the fourth and final meet in Los Angeles on June 28-29.
The Thomas incident is the latest in a string of stalking and abuse of female athletes. Frida Karlsson, a Swedish cross-country skiing world champion, recently brought her experience with stalking into public view when she went through a trial.
A man in his 60s was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay 40,000 kronor ($4,100) in damages after being convicted of stalking Karlsson for a year and four months, according to Swedish news agency TT. The man, according to the indictment, called Karlsson 207 times, left her voicemails and text messages and approached her, including outside her apartment.
In February, police in the United Arab Emirates detained a man who caused British tennis player Emma Raducanu distress by exhibiting " fixated behavior " toward he at a tennis tournament. Raducanu had been approached by the man at the Dubai Championships where he left her a note, took her photograph and engaged in behavior that caused her distress, according to the government of Dubai's media office.

Gribben also secured bronze medals in the 60 metre and 200 metre events in London. But it took him 70 long years to finally achieve running stardom, with Gribben's first attempt at the sport coming in the 1950s. That didn't exactly go to plan, with octogenarian admitting he could barely stand up straight after a half-mile effort. I said, 'I'm not a runner', but I never stopped after it.' Gribben started to master the art of running when he moved to Mirfield, West Yorkshire, in 1979 — where he remains to this day. And like any good athlete, Gribben dedicates himself to a gruelling mid-week training schedule. He explained: 'Three nights at least of a 5km run, most days I'll do a 60 metre sprint, and then the other things are an hour at the local gym a couple of days a week.' 'My dad died after a vicious attack in Benidorm and we still have no answers'
A British man tragically died after being viciously assaulted in Benidorm - but his family still don't know who attacked him. Mike Rydings had been on a lads' "trip of a lifetime", but it quickly ended in unthinkable disaster. The dad, then aged 47, had travelled to the Spanish resort with his pals. But after a night enjoying a few drinks at a bar and watching the 2018 World Cup, he was attacked during the early hours of June 23. Mike, a builder from Wythenshawe, sustained a broken nose and fell onto the ground, hitting his head and suffering horrific injuries. He had been set upon by a member of a group of five or six unknown men, reports the Manchester Evening News. Mike spent a month unconscious in hospital, with his then-pregnant daughter Hayley and sister Nicola flying out to be by his side as he lay hooked up to ventilator machines. After being repatriated to Salford Royal Hospital, Mike spent the remaining year of his life unable to move or speak, in a vegetative state and needing around the clock care. He tragically died in August of 2019. He was just 48. On what would have been his 54th birthday, Mike's daughter Hayley said the family has spent years in the dark and "unable to have closure without answers" as they issued another desperate appeal for information. Hayley said: "You can't ever really move on, because you don't have any answers. It's been years and we haven't been told anything." She added: "At the time, there were so many different witness stories. At one point we were told it was a stag party and someone in camouflage clothing. Then we were told it was a bouncer. "One stated that, the night he was attacked, my dad had a drink and was seen backing off with his hands in the air when he was punched to the nose, which broke, and then he fell backwards onto his head. "They said they have never been able to get the sound of him hitting the ground out of their head." Mike, whose full name is Michael, was 47-years-old when he went on the holiday to the Spanish town with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday and watch the 2018 football World Cup. His group of 30 were on the Avenue de Mallorca strip and had been to the Hippodrome Bar when the lifelong Manchester United fan became separated from his friends. In the early hours of the morning he became involved in a dispute with another group and was subsequently knocked to the ground and suffered catastrophic head injuries. There was an investigation by the Spanish police which concluded without anyone being prosecuted. During the investigations carried out by Greater Manchester Police, detectives interviewed over 15 English holidaymakers who were there on the night of the attack. They established that the man suspected of assaulting Mike was described as a white man aged in his 20s or 30s, with a larger than average build, 5ft 7ins to 6ft tall, who was possibly wearing camouflage clothing. The attack happened in an area popular with tourists. Bars were busy with drinkers watching the World Cup and enjoying a night out. Hayley, 36, added: "My dad's partner at the time got the call from one of his friends to tell her what had happened. When you hear that, you still never think it will be as bad as what we walked into. "When I first saw him in the hospital and he was lying there with tubes everywhere it was so painful I had to walk back out. I was pregnant with one of my daughters, and I flew out the next day with my partner. "Between me and Nicola his sister we kept going back and forth to make sure he was never on his own. It was so hard on us all. I had a young child at the time too, so it was really difficult." Mike was flown back and admitted to Salford Royal Hospital. Despite surviving until the August the following year, Hayley said he was unable to move or speak, and that she had "already lost him" before his life support was turned off. "He couldn't move, he couldn't talk and he couldn't breathe without a machine," Hayley added. "But there were days where it seemed like he was getting better and he'd take breaths on his own. "It would build up our hope up and we thought he might be able to have some quality of life. But every time you got up there, you'd hit a brick wall. "Only his eyes were his very limited communication via blinking. You never knew if he understood you or not. It was like we'd already lost him. He was such a proud person and for him to be like that... it just wasn't him. He was always out and about and active. "My dad never got to hold her or touch my daughter because he was in hospital. In 2022, I had a son which would have been his only grandson. He had always wanted a grandson." Greater Manchester Police confirmed there had been no updates in the case, which remains in the hands of Spanish authorities. Hayley added: "It was like the Spanish police just thought a British man had gone over, got p***ed and started a fight. But my dad was not a violent person. "We want to get this out there again, to see if anyone can remember anything or will speak out." Anyone who may have information or remember anything that may resonate from a trip to Benidorm in the summer of 2018 is still urged to contact police with any details they may have. Mike had been wearing a red Hugo boss t-shirt on the night in question and was outside the Hippodrome bar in Benidorm Square when a fight broke out with a group of five or six men. Anyone with information should contact the police's Major Incident Team on 0161 856 6777 quoting Operation Thurston. Details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Bombshell new Madeleine McCann theory: 6 claims about mystery Brit man and wife
A fresh search for missing Madeleine McCann ended this week with no new information seemingly found - however today a new bombshell theory about her disappearance emerged A new bombshell theory about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has emerged. It comes following a fresh search for the toddler from Leicestershire, who shockingly vanished in 2007 while on holiday with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal. This week German and Portuguese police descended on an area of southern Portugal close to Praia da Luz where Madeleine vanished. The last time authorities conducted a search related to Madeleine's disappearance around this area was in 2023. But after three days searching the area this week, detectives were pictured packing up their equipment following an operation thought to have cost around £300,000. READ MORE: Madeleine McCann UPDATES: Bombshell new theory over disappearance of toddler Today however, a shocking new theory about Madeleine's disappearance emerged. Portuguese daily Correio da Manha reported German prosecutors refused to probe a couple suspected of running over Madeleine McCann in a drink-drive accident. The newspaper said Portuguese authorities demanded an investigation into a British man and his German wife after his UK-based sister tipped off cops. Here are all the new claims... Alleged drink-drive incident German prosecutors reportedly refused to probe the couple suspected of running over Madeleine McCann in a drink-drive accident. German authorities are said to have rejected a Portuguese request to use an undercover police officer with a fake identity to try to befriend the female suspect and firm up their suspicions she was driving a car that hit Madeleine while under the influence of alcohol. Brit 'tipped off cops in 2018' The Portuguese newspaper reported that the sister of the unnamed British man at the centre of the new theory tipped off police in 2018. The report stated: 'German prosecutors were asked to authorise a covert police operation with someone posing as a friend of the woman's and trying to get her to confess, but the courts refused. 'It was decided to continue solely with the investigation into suspect Christian Brueckner, rejecting other possibilities.' 'Alcoholic' couple The report described the mystery couple as 'alcoholics' and placed the British man's wife in a café near the Ocean Club where she had supposedly been 'drinking' the night Madeleine went missing from the Algarve resort. Correio da Manha also reported another witness described as the couple's neighbour told police separately she heard them rowing the day after the three-year-old disappeared. She said she heard the man yelling: 'Why did you bring her?' Brit man dead Correio da Manha said the unnamed British man had now died. It did not say whether his German wife was still alive. In the front page report today, the newspaper claimed: "The German police refused to co-operate with Portugal's Policia Judiciaria in the investigation of a clue that pointed towards Madeleine McCann being run over. "In 2018 a British woman went to police in the UK to say she suspected her brother had been involved in the disappearance of the youngster. She said her brother was an alcoholic and since the day Madeleine vanished had appeared to hide a painful secret." Portuguese police 'thought driver might have panicked' Portuguese police thought the woman allegedly behind the wheel of the car driver might have "panicked" The newspaper report went on: "The neighbour discovered afterwards it was the man whose sister had reported him to police and was married to the woman who had been drinking in a cafe next to the Ocean Club where little Madeleine was staying with her parents and twin siblings. "Another report the police had indicated that in an identical car to the one the woman was then using, around the time of Madeleine's disappearance, a female and little girl had been seen inside. The PJ concluded she could have run Madeleine over and panicked." Brit 'refused to tell sister' The newspaper claimed the mystery British man had always 'refused to tell his sister if he had been involved in Madeleine's death' before she alerted authorities. Portuguese police are yet to respond to the Correio da Manha newspaper report.
