Stephen Hendy confesses to Steve Davis about 'humiliating' World Snooker Champs experience

Daily Mirror05-05-2025

Stephen Hendry is a seven-time world champion and widely regarded as one of the greatest snooker players of all time, but his career ended on a sour note in 2012
Snooker icon Stephen Hendry has revealed all to fellow legend Steve Davis about a Crucible quarter-final match that left him feeling 'humiliated' and led to his retirement shortly after. The Scotsman, who dominated the sport throughout the 90s with an incredible seven world titles, began his professional career at just 16 and claimed a total of 36 ranking titles.
He spent nine seasons ranked No. 1 before retiring in 2012. Since then, he has become a prominent figure in the media. In a conversation with Davis, Hendry discussed some of his worst losses at the iconic Crucible, which is currently hosting a historic final between Mark Williams and Zhao Xintong.

Specifically, he spoke about his 2012 quarter-final against Stephen Maguire, admitting how humiliated he felt after the 13-2 defeat that ultimately led to his retirement.

Hendry had made a remarkable start to the 2012 World Snooker Championship, achieving a brilliant maximum break against Stuart Bingham in the first round and defeating fellow Scot John Higgins 13-4 in the next match. However, his game against Maguire was one he'd rather forget, reports the Express
"I mean, my game was shot. Even the 147 was not... The striking of the cue ball was terrible," Hendry shared about his performance in the 2012 renewal while reflecting on his Cue Tips YouTube channel. "I had a victory over John Higgins in the next round in the last 16, which I never expected to do.
"But, the match was dreadful. I mean, John was bad. I wasn't great, and I managed to win. If I got a frame early [against Maguire], it might have been a different story, and who knows what might have happened. I lost the first session 4-0.
"Looking back, it's horrible that's my last game at the Crucible. A 13-2 defeat. I mean, it's humiliating. I didn't feel that bad in respect that I kind of was waiting for it to happen."
When probed by six-time world champion Davis about whether he had already decided to retire before the clash, Hendry confirmed: "Yeah. That's why the 147 was so special."

The snooker legend also touched on some painful memories from the iconic venue, sharing: "I mean, I felt pretty bad when Steve James beat me [in 1991], obviously with the whole Crucible curse thing. I drove up the road and I didn't say one word for four and a half hours."
In response to Davis asking about his toughest defeat in Sheffield, Hendry recalled the 2002 final, in which a deciding frame was needed to separate him and Peter Ebdon - the Englishman prevailing 18-17.
"Losing to Ebdon in the final," replied Hendry. "[I] beat Ronnie in the semis, it was 2002. It was probably the last time I played my best at the Crucible - that semi-final.
"Before that, I thought the winner of the Championship was going to come from the winner of our match. I thought either of us would beat Matthew [Stevens] or Peter in the final.
"So already I was thinking I had to take it properly. Played Peter in the final, and I didn't think there was any chance of him beating me over four sessions.
"There's a difference between being super confident and being... It's a different confidence when you don't think you can lose. Listen, I played ok, but Peter played great. But to lose in that deciding frame, I was gutted."

Stephen Hendry and Ken Doherty disagree on most underrated snooker player ever

Former world champions Stephen Hendry and Ken Doherty have picked players they consider the most underrated, and both chose men who narrowly missed out on Crucible glory. Hendry reckons the player he beat in four World Championship finals does not always get the credit he deserves. Jimmy White lost six Crucible finals in total, also beaten by Steve Davis and John Parrott in the sport's biggest game, and Hendry feels the Whirlwind is unfairly remembered for his defeats rather than his brilliance. A 10-time ranking event winner and a Masters champion, Hendry also feels White continuing to play a long time past his peak means people can forget how good he was in his pomp. 'Underrated, it's quite a tough category but I'm going to say Jimmy,' Hendry said on WST's Snooker Club podcast. 'Everyone goes on about he's been in six finals and not won one but what a player he was! 'People look at the way he plays now and he's like myself, he's a shadow of what he was, but when you look back at what a player he was, he invented naughty snooker. 'The way he played, with his talent, and he's said himself about his off-table activities, but with his talent he should have won a lot more.' Doherty, who beat Hendry to win his one world title in 1997, reckons it is two-time Crucible finalist Matthew Stevens who is underrated by the snooker community. The Welshman only ever won one ranking title – the 2003 UK Championship – but was a regular at the business end of the World Championship in the late 1990s and 2000s. He also won the Masters in 2000, although he had a strange record in that event as he never got past the first round on 10 other outings. Doherty explained: 'My most underrated would probably be Matthew Stevens. He was a class player, still is a class player. 'He did win the UK, won the Masters, the only one he didn't win was this one [World Championship] and he would have been a Triple Crown winner. People forget about that. 'He was a wonderful player for so many years and loved playing at the Crucible. Had a couple of finals, a few semis, saved some of his best snooker for here. He was one of the best I've played.' Seven-time Crucible champ Hendry admits that he underrated another top player, but no longer does so after a brilliant last season. More Trending Kyren Wilson won the World Championship in 2024, in something of a surprise to the Scot, who was thoroughly impressed by how he followed up that win with four ranking titles over the next campaign. 'I'll throw in another underrated [player] that might be a weird one: Kyren Wilson,' said the 56-year-old. 'I underrated him and then he won the world title. Even after he won the world title I think I underrated him until his performances this season. 'Four titles. I didn't think he was going to be a prolific winner and he's really impressed me this year.' New Rangers boss Russell Martin's chances of league success and beating Celtic rated as bookies reveal odds

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUSSELL MARTIN stopped short of promising to win trophies in his first season as Rangers boss. But he is adamant he has the tools to ensure the Light Blues WILL be seriously challenging Celtic when it comes to silverware - and one bookie tends to agree. 1 Russell Martin will be the new man in the Rangers dugout next season Credit: Willie Vass Martin was confirmed as the new Rangers head coach this morning and unveiled at a press conference with sporting director Kevin Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart by his side. Thelwell described Martin as the perfect appointment and has already outlined the five key things that made him the outstanding candidate for the Gers hierarchy. Martin told the media at his introductory press conference that he believes he CAN turn Rangers into trophy winners this season. It's just a question of whether he will or not, given the Hoops' dominance in domestic competitions this season. William Hill have attempted to answer that question by providing odds on Rangers winning the league in Martin's first season. The bookmaker has also priced up how likely the 39-year-old is to win all four league games against Celtic in the coming year. They also rated Gers' chances of going unbeaten at home, going unbeaten in the league as a whole and how likely they are to score in all 38 Premiership games. Celtic remain the favourites to win the title at 4/11 ON. But Rangers are now as short as 2/1 to claim the trophy. William Hill clearly fancy Martin's ability to make Rangers a force at home again, a far cry from their poor form at Ibrox under Barry Ferguson and latterly under Philippe Clement. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed With that in mind they've gone as short as 7/3 for the Ibrox side to not lose a game at home next season. Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: 'Following Russell Martin's appointment as the new Rangers boss, we go 7/4 that he makes Ibrox a fortress next season and goes unbeaten at home in the league. 'We've priced up some specials for the Scotsman's first season in charge, including 7/2 about him to win both home league games against Celtic – which would surely get the fans on his side. 'The Gers are 2/1 to win the league, with Celtic our current favourites at 4/11. The two will face off four times in the league this season and a clean sweep for Rangers is 40/1." Rangers 2025/26 #YourOdds (William Hill) Rangers to win the league 2/1 Rangers to go unbeaten in all 19 home league games 7/4 Rangers to win both home league games versus Celtic 7/2 Rangers to score at least one goal in each of their 38 Scottish Premiership games 9/2 Rangers to remain unbeaten in All four league games versus Celtic 5/1 Rangers to win all 19 Scottish Premiership home games 20/1 Rangers to go unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership 25/1 Rangers to win all 4 league games versus Celtic 40/1 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Russell Martin is another Rangers loser as Hotline hands Celtic the Treble already with panic button untouched

As predicted, Rangers ' new manager brings all the Bhoys to the Hotline yard. Russell Martin is the man tasked with getting Gers closer to their dominant rivals after five years of watching their rivals lift trophy after very recently. Battling Brendan Rodgers at the top of the table will be the bare minimum expected from Martin, although judging by the initial reaction, hopes are not high amongst the Ibrox faithful. emailed: "What a joke us making Russell Martin as manager. We might as well just give Celtic the Treble just now. Who at rangers thought it was a good idea to bring him to Rangers after he just got Southampton relegated and they just sacked him 5 or 6 months ago? So some idiot at Rangers said lets make him our next manager so we will. What a joke new owners are allowing this to happen." Lewis Fotheringham, Mount Ellen, said: "While I will give Russell Martin a chance as our sorry Head Coach, it is not exactly the type of appointment I had in mind. I felt we needed a high-profile manager to counter what Celtic has with Brendan Rodgers. Instead, we have got an inexperienced coach that has had mixed success in England. It seems like the club has gone for the cheap option again." Peter Cooperwhite added: "Now that it's confirmed Russell Martin is new Rangers manager, definitely not a first choice for me to be honest. I hope Thelwell has done a lot of thinking on this one. "Lets all get behind him give him a chance. His recruitment will be judged closely as we need at least six good players who will hit the ground right away as Europe qualifiers are getting closer. I hope his style of play is what Rangers need to achieve trophies." George McLeish wanted the "Rangers men" kept on. He emailed: Why are Rangers looking at another failure to be the next manager? Another non Scot who has won nothing in England and was sacked as a failure? "We had a team of Rangers die hards who should have been given at least a year's contract to try and get players who have Rangers blood in them. The board have hired another loser again. I have supported Rangers for over 60 years and have never seen such a board of directors over the the last 10 years as this lot, all they care about is the money , and wearing the Rangers tie. We need Rangers people in, not losers." And it seems Celtic fans are as giddy at Martin's arrival as their blue counterparts are scunnered. Mark McManus, Purley, emailed: "So Rangers have got their man. Serial winner Russell Martin joins the 49ers billion dollar club. I thought someone like Mourinho was to be next up. "No disrespect but are the owners saving their money to buy up top quality players like Modric, Vardy etc al. Regular Rangers fans on here, Flett, Lowe et al must be rubbing their hands in glee at how their club will be transformed next season ready for the quadruple cups." Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, predicts the same ofd banners will be out at Ibrox before long. He said: "Rangers bringing in a manager who achieved one solitary win out of seventeen in the premier league won't have Brendan Rodgers hitting the panic button. "My guess they never got their Hollywood candidate was that the predicted war chest of transfer funds wasn't sufficient. Lose the first Glasgow derby and the time for change banners will be quickly reintroduced." Kenny Wilson, Moffat, added: "With Rangers now getting their new manager, who let's be honest has an abysmal record, do they still think Celtic are petrified of them ? I like many fellow fans won't be having many sleepless nights over the summer. All the hype about a big name coming and that's who they get. The comedy roadshow continues." Andy Logan Livingston, wonders who else was interviewed if Martin was the outstanding choice. He emailed: "So Rangers didn't get Jurgen Klopp as was mentioned in here, a real upgrade though in a manager with a win rate of less than 40% in lower leagues in England. The outstanding candidate? Who else was interviewed other passengers in that taxi??"
