Jarome Luai called up by NSW Blues to replace injured Mitch Moses for State of Origin Game 2

The Guardiana day ago

Jarome Luai will replace Mitch Moses as NSW's five-eighth for the second State of Origin match after a calf strain dashed Moses's hopes of playing. Moses pulled up sore while running the ball during a training session at NSW's Blue Mountains camp on Thursday, injuring the same calf that troubled him earlier this year.
The Blues have sent Moses for scans on the injury that delivers a blow to their hopes of sealing a series victory by winning Origin II in Perth on Wednesday.
'It's terrible, isn't it? Mitch played really well in game one,' said Blues coach Laurie Daley. 'We're unsure of how bad it is but he won't be any good for Wednesday with the short turnaround.'
Daley called Luai on Thursday to ask whether he would be available after Moses beat him for selection in NSW's game-one win. Luai, who had just finished on the training paddock at Wests Tigers, answered Daley's distress call to reunite with former NSW halfback Nathan Cleary in the halves.
It's the second time in as many years that injury has forced the Blues to turn to a player they initially snubbed, with James Tedesco coming in for Dylan Edwards to play fullback in last year's series opener.
'Luai handled it [the initial rejection] with such class and he said if I needed him, he'd be ready to go,' Daley said. 'So when I rang him, he said, 'Sweet, I'm ready to go'. That filled me with confidence.'
Luai played five-eighth in all three games of NSW's 2024 series win and has featured alongside NSW halfback Cleary at Origin level six times already. The pair also won four consecutive NRL premierships together at Penrith before Luai joined the Tigers this season.
'Back playing together, there'd be an energy and a synergy there,' Daley said. '[Luai] played there last year, has got a good combination with Nathan and he's that left-side player. He'll do a fine job.'
The NRL has already granted the Blues an exemption to bring Luai into the team from outside the 20-man squad that Daley had named on Tuesday. Luai's call-up means Canterbury five-eighth Matt Burton, considered the other contender to replace Moses, will remain 18th man.
Daley defended the call to once again overlook Burton, who will watch from the sidelines as NSW's replacement player for a fifth time in seven Origin games. Burton's ability to cover the outside backs and halves has made him a favoured choice for the emergency role.

'[Burton] would be disappointed, you'd want him to be disappointed, but he gives us a bit more versatility in that 18th-man role,' Daley said. 'He can play a few more positions. I just think Jarome and Nathan's combination, they've had so much success.'
Luai will arrive at the Blues' team hotel in Leura on Thursday afternoon, expected to bring his trademark high energy to a squad reeling from the injury.
'He'll walk in and everyone will feed off his energy,' Daley said. 'I don't think anything fazes Jarome. He's always up for a challenge and the bigger the challenge, the better he goes. He's a guy that thrives in this environment. It's not an issue for him so it shouldn't be an issue for anyone else.'

Aussie Olympian Heath Ryan is BANNED over shocking video showing him subjecting a horse to a shocking act 42 times in footage that has gone global

Olympian Heath Ryan has been suspended by Equestrian Australia after a video surfaced showing him repeatedly whipping a horse. Ryan had insisted he was on a 'rescue mission' after horrific footage emerged of the international equestrian star whipping a horse more than 40 times at a private stable. He claimed he was acting in the horse's best interests, saying the animal had a dangerous history. Equestrian Australia called the footage alarming and issued a provisional suspension pending a formal investigation. 'Equestrian Australia is extremely alarmed and concerned by the treatment of the horse shown in this footage,' a statement read. 'Our policies include high standards to protect all participants and their horses against any adverse physical, social, and emotional conditions.' Ryan, 66, who competed at the 2008 Games in Beijing in the dressage team event, issued a statement online after the confronting vision appeared on social media via US-based Facebook page Dressage Hub. He conceded the footage is 'awful' - but the Newcastle based rider maintained he was doing his utmost to ensure the horse wasn't sent to the slaughter house. Ryan also claimed the vision was posted 'by an unhappy ex-employee.' 'Oh my goodness! The most awful video of me on a young horse has just surfaced,' his lengthy Facebook post began. 'This horse was dropped off at my place on his way to the knackery. His name is Nico. He was 6 years of age. A beautiful type. '(After the repeated whipping) I rode Nico for another couple of days and he responded very well. 'All of this transpired sincerely with the horse's best interests the sole consideration. 'I (also) need to add that this happened about two years the video has been posted by an unhappy ex-employee. Heath Ryan's lengthy statement after the confronting vision appeared on social media via Facebook page Dressage Hub 'All I can say is that this awful video was collateral damage of me from the bottom of my heart launching a rescue mission.' Ryan has competed in equestrian events in Australia for decades, with his crowning achievement an appearance at the Beijing Olympics. He is also the brother of triple Olympic equestrian gold medallist Matt Ryan, who was part of the eventing team who famously stormed to victory at the Sydney Games in 2000. The incident follows British golden girl Charlotte Dujardin sensationally quitting just days before the 2024 Paris Olympics after a video emerged of her allegedly whipping a horse on the legs repeatedly. Last December, Dujardin was suspended from the sport for 12 months by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), as the six-time Olympic medallist conceded she made an 'an error of judgement' during a coaching session. Dujardin had returned to competition leading into Paris after giving birth to her first child Isabella in March of 2023.

Channel Seven star shocks viewers with remarks about footy star Marcus Bontempelli's private parts during VERY rude slow-motion replay on live TV

Channel Seven commentator Brian Taylor has given new meaning to the AFL term 'hard ball get' by focusing on footy star Marcus Bontempelli's genitalia during an eye-opening slow-motion replay on Thursday night. The Western Bulldogs skipper gave away a free kick when he tried to tackle St Kilda's Mitch Owens from behind in the third quarter and crashed into the ball, which collided with his private parts. Taylor described the action to viewers by saying, 'Have a look at Bontempelli here. 'He lands on the ball in an awkward position. You can see just here I think it got him right on the doodle. 'And there it is. And he felt uncomfortable for a moment.' Taylor's quip set off laughter in the Seven commentary booth and some fans were quick to see the funny side. 'That's gotta be a disposal,' one wrote on X. 'That Bonted his Pelli,' another added. 'Helluva slowmo that one,' a third said. However, other footy viewers thought the moment was too low-rent. 'The state of commentary and coverage… our game is dying. We used to have Commetti,' wrote one, referring to retired commentary great Dennis Cometti. 'That's why @FOXFOOTY is so much more classier than those 7 bogans. No mention of it on Fox Footy,' another said. Superstar-in-the-making Sam Darcy kicked three goals on return from his knee injury to help lift the free-scoring Dogs to a comprehensive 72-point win. Less than eight weeks after fearing his season was over, Darcy was an ever-present threat in the Bulldogs' thumping 20.12 (132) to 8.12 (60) victory at Marvel Stadium. The Dogs seized control early and comfortably improved their record to 7-6, while St Kilda fell to 5-8 with the top-eight slipping away. Bailey Dale (26 disposals), Matt Kennedy (28) and key defender Rory Lobb (17) were all influential as the Bulldogs outscored their opponents in every quarter and posted their highest total of the season. Darcy finished with 3.2 from 19 disposals, while Aaron Naughton (three goals), Ryley Sanders, Buku Khamis and Kennedy (two each) also hit the scoreboard. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge thought Darcy fought well through some physical treatment from St Kilda's defenders. 'He was pretty good, 'Darc'. Obviously they paid him a fair bit of attention,' Beveridge said. 'It's something that he's going to have to deal with week to week. 'As long as he's just treated like every other key forward, that's all that matters.' Bontempelli was restricted to 14 disposals under close attention from Marcus Windhager, and took a nasty knee to the ribs in a second-quarter marking contest. Windhager (16 disposals, one goal) worked tirelessly for St Kilda, with Callum Wilkie strong in defence and Jack Sinclair (30 touches) busy in his 200th game. But the Saints were well beaten, losing a lop-sided inside-50 count 68-40. And they have cause for concern over Hunter Clark, who faces scrutiny from the match review officer for a dangerous tackle on Matt Kennedy. Zak Jones could also be looked at over an off-the-ball bump that floored James O'Donnell.

Albo's government has just made a decision that will infuriate every sports fan in Australia

Aussie cricket fans hoping to see major ICC events on free-to-air television, look away now. The Albanese Government has made a decision that is going to keep you locked out for years. Australian cricket fans are fuming after being locked out of watching their national team compete in the World Test Championship Final, as the match remains behind a paywall on Amazon Prime Video. Despite lobbying from Channel 7 and widespread public frustration, the Federal Government declined to add the WTC Final against South Africa to the anti-siphoning list. The anti-siphoning legislation ensures certain sporting events remain available for free-to-air broadcasters, but in this case, it didn't apply. Now, in further bad news, Aussie cricket fans are going to be locked out of the next WTC final as well. A Government spokesperson acknowledged the backlash and confirmed a review would come - but not until late 2026. 'The reformed anti-siphoning scheme and modernised list commenced on 17 December 2024,' the spokesperson said. 'The Broadcasting Services Act provides for the review of the reformed anti-siphoning scheme after two years.' The Government claimed this was to 'recognise that technologies and consumer preferences are rapidly evolving.' Had the opponent been England or possibly India, the rules would have required the Government to offer the rights for open bidding to free-to-air channels. Instead, the match - airing in the ideal 7.30pm primetime slot - is available only through Prime Video. As Marnus Labuschagne took the field under pressure on night one, thousands of Australians vented on social media about being shut out of the action. 'Should be on free to air!' one fan posted. 'Nice work alienating most of the audience.' Social media erupts with backlash over Australia's blocked access to major cricket matches Another added, 'Very disappointing when me and my dad can't sit back like old times and watch our beloved Aussies.' A third frustrated user wrote, 'Massive fail by CA to allow this game to be hostage to a minor pay TV presence in Aust.' Even some who paid for Prime were left disappointed, with one subscriber complaining, 'Was a terrible feed, buffering every 20 seconds.' Fans accustomed to Fox Cricket or Channel 7 coverage - which typically includes highlights, replays and expert analysis - were shocked by the absence of any local flair or effort from Prime. Adding insult to injury, Prime also failed to flood social media with replays or short-form content, a staple of modern cricket broadcasting. For Australian cricket fans, the changes are coming too late. The review date means Prime Video will continue to hold exclusive rights to many major ICC events until at least the end of 2027. That includes the 2025 World Test Championship Final in England and the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa and Namibia. A full list of tournaments locked behind Prime's paywall before the review includes two men's T20 World Cups, two women's T20 World Cups, the Men's Champions Trophy, both ODI World Cups, two WTC Finals, and youth and qualifying tournaments. This sweeping deal leaves cricket fans no option but to subscribe to Prime if they want to follow Australia in most ICC competitions for the next two years. Meanwhile, Channel 7 - which holds the domestic rights in partnership with Foxtel - has been left sidelined. Since 2018, Seven and Foxtel have shared a $1.18billion deal to cover international and Big Bash cricket in Australia. That deal was extended in January for a further seven years, now worth $1.5billion, securing domestic rights until the end of the 2030–31 season. But the ICC, seeking bigger global deals, opted to sell directly in each market.
