WINNIPEG, MB, May 20, 2025 /CNW/ - Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is proud to announce that its flagship Embracing Excellence Lean Conference will take place June 9–12, 2025, at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, bringing together, over the course of four days, nearly 1,000 industry leaders from across the country to confront Canada's most pressing manufacturing challenges: lagging productivity, supply chain instability, and global trade uncertainty.
"Canada's productivity crisis is directly impacting our competitiveness," said Otto Kemerle, CME Manitoba Advisory Board Chair and President of the International Truck Body. "Through Lean, manufacturers can take control of what they can improve. Operations, processes, and people. It's a strategic response to volatility that doesn't rely on subsidies or major capital injections."
This year's program will explore how Lean methodologies can be applied to increase productivity without major capital investment, build resilient and responsive supply chains, and help Canadian manufacturers remain agile in the face of global economic shifts. It will also emphasize the importance of people and culture in sustaining long-term performance focusing on leadership, team engagement, and frontline empowerment.
"Manufacturers are being squeezed by rising costs and increasing trade uncertainty," said Todd Leroy, Vice President of Manufacturing at Loewen Windows. "To stay competitive, we need to do more with what we already have. Improving productivity through Lean isn't optional; it's essential. It allows us to adapt quickly without relying on external support or massive infrastructure overhauls."
This national event will offer immersive learning, practical case studies, and in-depth conversations on Lean manufacturing as a strategy to enhance competitiveness, agility, and workforce engagement.
By gathering national voices in Winnipeg, the conference highlights Manitoba's strategic manufacturing and logistics role and supports regional efforts to build stronger, smarter operations that can weather uncertainty.

But experts say B.C. youth are at risk of losing more than money if they can't find work. Summer jobs also provide a master class in soft skills, like communication, time management and problem solving, with lasting impacts. 'The data overwhelmingly suggests that it is good for youth to work,' said Marjan Houshmand, a business professor at the University of Hawaii who grew up in Vancouver. A Statistics Canada labour force survey released this week found that in May, the unemployment rate among students ages 15 to 24 was 20.1 per cent, an increase of 3.2 per cent from May 2024. The rate has been trending upward since May 2022, when it was 11.4 per cent. The survey noted that May job numbers provide 'the first indicator of the summer job market, especially for older youth, as high-school students are still attending classes.' The tough market is reflected in postings as well. A report by job website found that as of May, summer job postings across Canada were down 22 per cent from a year earlier, with a drop in demand for summer camp counsellors, painters and lifeguards. The summer job market is connected to the state of the Canadian job market and the economy as a whole, said Brendon Bernard, senior economist at Indeed , noting that it would be odd for youth employment opportunities to outstrip general market trends. But what is notable, he said, is the quick deterioration of the summer job market over the last two years, from a strong market to one where it's tough to find a job. Bernard said the dip in hiring is compounded by 'surging' population growth over the same period, with particular growth in the youth population, including foreign students and some temporary foreign workers. 'We're seeing a greater share of youth who have never had a job,' he said. Although concerning at face value, that also hints at other worries in the labour market, as people may not be moving up the job ladder as quickly. 'When employment conditions are weaker, a traffic jam develops, and there are fewer opportunities for new entries to fill the ranks,' said Bernard, whose first job was frying chicken wings at a neighbourhood sports bar. Houshmand said summer jobs are often 'not glamorous,' but they can open doors and provide more than financial benefits. That's particularly true when teens work in a family business, where they might be given more responsibility. 'They learn about what it means to run a business by experiencing it firsthand,' she said. 'They might start to develop a different relationship with their parents and an understanding of what their family is working toward.' Houshmand, whose first job was babysitting, was one of several experts who pointed young job-seekers to B.C.'s many small businesses to look for opportunities. Spry said Taves Family Farms takes its role as a 'first-time employer' seriously: 'We know kids need that shot.' The farm puts personality and attitude above experience as they employ a team of about 60 people for the fall agritourism season, holding group interviews where prospective employees play games and run an obstacle course. 'We just want to know who they are,' said Spry, adding they aren't looking for the loudest people, but those who work well with a team and have an authenticity that resonates with others. Spry, whose first job was a page at the public library, advises teens 'not to be afraid to try,' even if they don't have the exact skills or experience for a job. She's impressed when she receives a letter with an application that explains why the person thinks they'd be a good fit. Brent Dul, executive vice-president with recruitment agency Randstad Canada , advises young job hunters to tailor their resumés and cover letters as best as possible to the job they are applying for, even if they don't have work experience: 'Think: What have I done?' He said it's smart to put the most important items at the top of a resumé and look closely at the job description to use the same type of language and key words. 'Looking for work should feel like a full-time job,' he said, recalling his own job hunt, when he dropped off resumés at dozens of businesses before being hired at Safeway as a courtesy clerk. 'The more times you put out your resumé, the most probability you will get a call back.' Dul said young people might find the most opportunities in tourism and seasonal sectors, as well as in gig work like tutoring, yard work or pet-sitting. Bella Borden has been job hunting for several weeks as her summer class schedule at Capilano University is lighter. But despite putting out 15 resumés, she's received a response from only one business. 'I heard back for a job as a line cook, but I didn't get hired,' she said. 'That's maybe not surprising because I don't have that experience.' But Borden has experience working in retail while in high school. She received no reply to many of the online applications she's filled out for jobs at large corporate retailers. She's also responded to help-wanted ads on Craigslist, with no success. 'I'm still looking for jobs,' she said. 'But to be honest, at this point I'm using student loans to pay for my expenses, plus help from my parents. If I don't find something, I'll be kind of screwed.' Her rent for a single bedroom in a basement suite in North Vancouver with a shared kitchen and no living space is $1,150 a month. Bobbie-Anne McFee's two teens found work through local connections. The Chilliwack woman said her 19-year-old son got a job at the cinema when he was 15, but wanted more hours and money after his first year of university. 'He didn't have much luck for all the applying he did,' she said. He got one interview, which required him to come home during exams for the interview, but he didn't get the job. A neighbour with a concrete company provided an opportunity. 'We let him struggle a bit, putting out applications,' she said. 'But when nothing was turning up, we talked to the neighbour (who) had previously mentioned having work if he wanted.' McFee, whose own first job was babysitting, said her 15-year-old daughter found work on a local farm starting in June. But she had few tips for other jobseekers. 'Perseverance is good,' she said, but in the end, it feels like 'luck' that her kids found jobs. gluymes@
