U.S. Customs and Border Protection unit renamed to honor slain agent Michael O. Maceda
March 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Customs and Border Protection renamed one of its Air and Marine Operations units Thursday in honor of an agent who died in the line of duty.
In a press release, the federal law enforcement agency announced that its now-formerly named Mayagüez Marine Unit has been dedicated the Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit.
Agent Michel Maceda was one of three agents who stopped a vessel off Puerto Rico in November of 2022, and allegedly discovered the people onboard were attempting to smuggle drugs into the United States.
The traffickers opened fire on Maceda and his fellow agents, striking all three. Of the three agents, Maceda's life couldn't be saved.
The Michel O. Maceda Memorial Act was passed by Congress in September of 2024, which designated the renaming of the Mayagüez Marine Unit as the Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit, and the dedication was made official in Puerto Rico at the San Juan Custom House.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was present and bestowed the two agents who survived the incident, Customs and Border Protection agents Jorge Santiago and Mark Lamphere with the Medal of Valor and Purple Cross awards.

A Miami-Dade County judge on Wednesday signed an arrest warrant, which was obtained by the Washington Post and WSVN Miami, charging Brown of attempted murder with a firearm. His bond was set at $10,000, with a stipulation to remain under house arrest until a trial. The matter stems from a May 17 incident, which was chronicled on social media with videos and post, which occurred outside a boxing event in Miami hosted by influencer Adin Ross. Videos appeared to show Brown holding a gun before gunshots were heard. Brown claimed he was "jumped by multiple individuals" who tried to steal his jewelry and cause him harm. Brown said he was temporarily detained by police and released, but never arrested. "I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me," Brown wrote on X at the time. "I will keep you all posted step-by-step on the process. Thank you for the support and love." Brown, 36, spent his final NFL season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time All-Pro spent nine of his 12 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brown joined quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2019. He joined Brady again in 2020 when he was with the Buccaneers. Brown's 928 receptions rank 25th in NFL history. His 84.2 receiving yards per game rank fourth in NFL history.

Ex-CIA analyst gets three years in prison for sharing top secret information
June 12 (UPI) -- A former CIA analyst has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for obtaining and sending top secret Defense Department information to unauthorized recipients who then posted it on social media, the Justice Department announced Thursday. Asif William Rahman, 34, of Vienna, had been a CIA employee since 2016 with a top secret security clearance and had access to sensitive information until his termination, a release from the Justice Department said. "For months, this defendant betrayed the American people and the oaths he took upon entering his office by leaking some of our nation's most closely held secrets," John Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security, said. "As this case demonstrates, the Department of Justice will continue to protect our nation by vigorously investigating and prosecuting leakers who compromise our nation's security." Court documents show that Rahman accessed and printed two top secret documents about a foreign ally and its plans against a foreign adversary. "Rahman removed the documents, photographed them, and transmitted them to individuals he knew were not entitled to receive them," the Justice Department release said. "By Oct. 18, 2024, the documents appeared publicly on multiple social media platforms, complete with the classification markings." Court records show Rahman continued to access and share top secret information with unauthorized recipients until early November 2024. He then began a "deletion campaign" of work saved on his top secret workstation. Rahman was indicted by a grand jury on Nov. 7, 2024, and was arrested by FBI agents while arriving at work five days later. He pleaded guilty to two counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information related to national defense. He has remained in custody since his arrest.
