IPOH: A 75-year-old company director here lost about RM1.4mil after falling victim to an online trading scam.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the man had on April 15 received a call from an unknown woman offering him to be a business partner who buys products from foreign companies.
"Having supposedly checked the status of the company, which he found to be operating since 1989, he agreed to take part.
"He was asked to download a mobile app SHV Shop that sells luxurious branded items," Comm Noor Hisam said in a statement on Tuesday (May 27).
"If someone wants to buy a product, the man would need to pay for it up front and he would get 30% in commission," he said, adding that his first transaction of about RM22,122 was made through a cash deposit machine to a bank account of said company.
"Having received the return, he trusted the company and conducted online and over-the-counter transactions of about RM1.4mil into six different bank accounts.
"After the transactions, he stopped receiving any returns and he realised he has been cheated," he added.
Comm Noor Hisam said the man lodged a report on Sunday (May 25), with the case to be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
"The police would like to remind the people to be careful of investment schemes that promise overly-high returns.
"Also check trustworthy sources like SemakMule, Bank Negara and Securities Commission to get more information before investing in any schemes," he added.

[Watch] Midnight Brawl At Dataran Merdeka Exposes Our Never-Ending Mat Rempit Story

Subscribe to our FREE It started like any other Friday night in Malaysia. Motorcycles gathered at Dataran Merdeka, their modified exhausts echoing off colonial buildings that have seen this same scene play out for decades. But this time, instead of the usual illegal racing, social media captured something else: young men turning their riding helmets into projectile weapons while fellow riders formed a makeshift arena with their bikes. The 23-second clip, which is now prompting police action, shows what many Malaysians already know too well – our mat rempit problem isn't going anywhere. It's just finding new ways to make headlines. Dang Wangi's Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, has confirmed they're investigating under Section 148 of the Penal Code. But ask any Malaysian who's been kept awake by racing exhausts at 3 AM, and they'll tell you this is just the tip of a very noisy iceberg. From Weekend Warriors to a Way of Life Every weekend, same story: these boys come here on their kapcai (small motorcycles), sometimes modified until you can't recognise the original bike. First, they race, then they hang around, sometimes they fight. It's been happening for a long time – only now they post everything on social media. Today's mat rempit scene isn't just about illegal racing anymore – it's become a lifestyle for many young Malaysians, especially those who feel left behind by the country's rapid development. no offense but mat rempit are always the problematic one . fight my facts if you want — angelic devil (@HannRifq) The Never-Ending Cycle: Why Mat Rempit Culture Refuses to Die But the reality isn't that simple. For every midnight racer at Dataran Merdeka, there's a story about limited opportunities, boredom, or simply the magnetic pull of belonging to something, even if that something involves risking life and limb on public roads. As police work to identify the helmet-throwing warriors from Friday's video, most Malaysians know this won't be the last mat rempit incident we'll see. After all, this is a scene that's survived decades of police crackdowns, government programs, and public criticism. The only difference now? When these midnight showdowns happen, they don't just echo through our streets – they echo through our social media feeds too.
