Queen's favourite sandwich she had ‘for every afternoon tea' since childhood
When it came to enjoying her daily afternoon tea, the late Queen Elizabeth had one particular favourite sandwich that she always tucked into - and it's a surprisingly simple one
The late Queen Elizabeth was a creature of habit, especially when it came to enjoying her afternoon tea. The former monarch never missed afternoon tea, no matter what she was doing or where she was in the world.
Her duties took her all over the globe, and she had a host of talented private chefs ready to cater for her every day, but when it came to her preferred sandwich—an insider has revealed—there was one surprisingly simple choice that she always opted for since childhood.
Generally, the late monarch and the rest of the Royal Family enjoy their afternoon tea between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm. This regal spread tends to feature a range of savoury snacks and delicious sweet treats, including her favourite chocolate biscuit cake.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady worked for the Royal Family for 15 years, receiving his formal training at the Savoy Hotel in London. He previously revealed the Queen's favourite sandwich.
In one YouTube video to mark the return of garden parties at Buckingham Palace, McGrady revealed that one of The Queen's favourite afternoon treats was jam pennies.
He said, "The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl. She's had them for afternoon tea ever since. It's simple: just bread and jam with a little butter—usually strawberry jam. We'd make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens."

According to another former royal chef, Owen Hodgson, the Queen was also fond of a simple tuna mayonnaise sandwich. She reportedly liked her sarnie well buttered and served with thin slices of cucumber and a sprinkle of pepper.
While the late monarch enjoyed a few other treats with her afternoon tea, the whole affair would certainly not have been complete without some scones.
She also followed the traditional Cornish method when eating her scones, spreading the jam on first before adding a dollop of cream.
McGrady previously said: "She'd always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world. We'd flown out to Australia and were on the Royal Yacht. It was five o'clock in the morning, but for the Queen, it was five in the afternoon, so my first job was making scones."
In another interview, he added: "When I started as a young chef at Buckingham Palace, it was fascinating to see how important afternoon tea was to the Queen." He revealed that she enjoyed a "full afternoon tea of sandwiches and pastries".
"In terms of scones - one day plain and one day with raisins folded through," he said. "Also, tiny pastries like raspberry tartlets and a cut cake, honey and cream sponge, fruit cake, banana bread, or her favourite chocolate biscuit cake. It would all be 'washed down with a delightful steaming hot cup of Earl Grey tea."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle explored changing their family name to Spencer during delays in securing UK passports for their children Archie and Lilibet, it has emerged. The source was quoted as saying: 'Harry was at a point where British passports for his children with their updated Sussex surnames (since the death of Queen Elizabeth II) were being blocked with a string of excuses over the course of five months. 'Out of sheer exasperation he went to his uncle to effectively say: 'My family are supposed to have the same name and they're stopping that from happening because the kids are legally HRH, so if push comes to shove, if this blows up and they won't let the kids be called Sussex, then can we use Spencer as a surname?'' While the Mail on Sunday reported last week that Earl Spencer – the brother of Harry's late mother, Princess Diana – had advised him against taking such a step, warning of 'insurmountable' legal hurdles, a source close to the couple strongly denied this version of events, and The Guardian reported that Earl Spencer had been enthusiastic and supportive of the name change. However, the discussion over a possible move to adopt Diana's birth name was shelved once the passport applications were approved just days after the Sussexes' lawyers threatened to pursue a data subject access request, according to The Guardian. Archie and Lilibet are named on the royal family website's succession page as sixth and seventh in line to the throne, and are listed as the Prince and Princess of Sussex respectively, titles they gained the right to when their grandfather Charles assumed the throne. A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said that, as a rule, they do not comment on private issues pertaining to the duke and duchess's children.

Fascinating to speak to Doctor Who stars for Unleashed special, says host
The episode, which includes interviews with past Doctors and companions, celebrates 20 years since the sci-fi show's revival and explores the programme's impact on Wales, which is where the series was revived by showrunner Russell T Davies in 2005. Taking part is Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, who played Amy Pond and Rory Williams in the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who, as well as Tennant, Ncuti Gatwa and Jodie Whittaker, who have all played the time-travelling alien. Piper, 42, played the ninth and 10th's Doctor's companion, and appears now to have replaced Gatwa in the role of the Doctor. Powell said: 'It's always great seeing some of the iconic faces from the past, right? We talk to some of the most famous companions of recent years, like Billie Piper, Mandip Gill and Karen Gillan, and some Doctors as well – Jodie Whittaker, David Tennant and, of course, Ncuti Gatwa. 'To see them back and talking so passionately about their experience on Doctor Who is fascinating. 'Getting their take on it, because I think you do reflect differently all these years after doing something, is really cool.' He added: 'Fans can expect to hear from the people who made all of the magic happen, straight from the horse's mouth – the executives who brought Doctor Who back, why they did it, the challenges they faced, the directors who helped to make the programme work, and fascinatingly for me as well, the production design team who were there designing what the revival of Doctor Who looked like. The finale also saw Whittaker, the 13th doctor, make a guest appearance while Gatwa's Doctor appeared to be travelling through alternate universes. The credit at the end of the programme said: 'Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper.' Piper previously played the physical interface of a sentient doomsday weapon called the Moment during the 50th anniversary special, The Day Of The Doctor. Gatwa played the Time Lord across two series after fellow Scottish actor Tennant bi-generated in 2023. Doctor Who has filmed in locations across Wales since its revival in 2005 and Powell said this will be explored in the new episode of Unleashed. Powell said: 'I think Doctor Who has had a massive impact on Cardiff and Wales. We explore that in the Unleashed special, and people like Russell T Davies (showrunner) and Julie Gardner (executive producer) talk about it in the episode. 'Some of the Welsh people who were given opportunities to work in television, thanks to Doctor Who, have gone on to do brilliant and beautiful things all over the world – and all of that was because Doctor Who came to Cardiff. 'Some of those people are now plying their trade all over the world on some of the most influential programmes out there, and a lot of the tricks of the trade they learned from Doctor Who. 'That infrastructure and industry wouldn't necessarily be what it is today if they hadn't made that decision to bring Doctor Who to Cardiff all those years ago. It's really fascinating to delve into.' The special hour-long episode of Doctor Who: Unleashed will land on Saturday June 7 at 6am on BBC iPlayer, and air on BBC One Wales and BBC Three later that day.
