Marta back for Brazil after retirement and starts as captain in win over Japan
SAO PAULO (AP) — Marta was given the captain's armband by Brazil for her first start for her country since last year's Paris Olympics in a 2-1 win over Japan in a friendly match in Sao Paulo on Monday.
The six-time world player of the year returned to Brazil's squad for a doubleheader against Japan and was a second-half substitute in a 3-1 victory last Friday.
Three days later, the 39-year-old Marta started — and was made captain for — the match at Estádio Cicero de Souza Marques and played 73 minutes before being substituted for Jhonson, who scored the winning goal six minutes later.
Marta, one of the best players in the history of women's soccer, announced last year that she would step down from the national team following the Olympics. The Brazilians went on to win the silver medal after losing in the final to the U.S. 1-0.
She carried on playing at club level for Orlando Pride, which won the National Women's Soccer League last season. The Pride has re-signed Marta through 2026.
Brazil is preparing for the defense of its title in the Copa America Femenina, which opens in July in Ecuador.

When they needed the tying goal after falling behind to the defending champion Florida Panthers, Connor McDavid delivered the perfect pass. Advertisement And when Game 1 was threatening to drag into a second overtime, McDavid found Draisaitl for the winner. Draisaitl and McDavid took over Wednesday night when it mattered most, delivering a series-opening 4-3 victory that put them three wins from the championship they've been working toward for a decade. 'They don't take many nights off, that's for sure,' teammate Brett Kulak said. "They usually are our top guys every single night, and the bigger the stage the better they get.' Playing through pain, Draisaitl did not score a goal in the final last year, when Edmonton lost the first three games, got back even and dropped a heartbreaker in Game 7 to fall short. Canning and Mets beat Dodgers 6-1 behind Alonso's 2 homers and 5 RBIs
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pete Alonso homered twice and drove in five runs, Griffin Canning held baseball's best offense scoreless for six innings and the New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Wednesday night. After the teams split a pair of 10-inning games to begin the series, the Mets took a 3-0 lead in the first when Alonso launched a two-run shot. They didn't score again until his three-run drive in the eighth, when Alonso hammered his 14th homer of the season 447 feet to nearly the top of the left-field pavilion. Canning (6-2) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked one for his first win since May 5 at Arizona. Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin hit Francisco Lindor with a pitch to open the game. Brandon Nimmo grounded into a fielder's choice to second, and Lindor was safe at third on Kiké Hernández's error.
