Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice triggers ‘No Space for Bezos' protests lrom locals

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's upcoming wedding in Venice has drawn sharp criticism from local activists, who say the event symbolises the city's transformation into a playground for the global elite.
The three-day celebration, set for June 26–28 , is expected to host around 200 high-profile guests, including Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, and members of the Kardashian family. But not all Venetians are looking forward to hosting the wedding in their city.
A protest group has launched a campaign titled 'No Space for Bezos,' using banners, wall stickers and a prominent display on St. Mark's Tower featuring Bezos' name crossed out in red. Organisers accuse the billionaire of contributing to the city's gentrification and pricing out its long-time residents.

'This wedding is the symbol of the exploitation of the city by outsiders,' Federica Toninelli, one of the activists, told Reuters.
Protesters have threatened to block access to the canals and narrow streets used for the event's venues.
Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro responded by expressing disappointment over the backlash. 'We will have to apologise to Bezos,' he said, calling the protesters unrepresentative of the city's general sentiment.
If it goes ahead as planned, the wedding will be Venice's largest celebrity nuptial since George Clooney's marriage to Amal Alamuddin in 2014.

Michelle Obama jokes she's glad she didn't have a son: 'He'd be a Barack'

US President Barack Obama gestures to himself as he and First Lady Michelle Obama await the arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan, for a State Dinner at the White House, in Washington, September 25, 2015. PHOTO: REUTERS Former First Lady Michelle Obama sparked headlines during a candid conversation on the latest episode of her podcast 'IMO,' joking that she's 'glad' she didn't have a son — because he would have turned out just like her husband, Barack Obama. Speaking with her brother Craig Robinson and guest Angie Martinez, Obama said, 'I'm so glad I didn't have a boy. Because he would have been a Barack Obama. Ooh,' while shaking her head and smiling. Martinez laughed off the comment, calling the idea of a 'Baby Barack' amazing, but Michelle added, 'No, I woulda felt for him.' The conversation centered around parenting boys, with both Martinez and Robinson being parents to sons. Michelle, mother of Sasha and Malia, discussed the complexities of raising boys today, especially when it comes to teaching them how to communicate in relationships and navigate situations like traffic stops. Her comments come amid ongoing speculation about her 32-year marriage to the former president, with recent public appearances fueling rumors of strain. However, Michelle praised Barack's parenting in a recent episode with Bruce Springsteen, calling him a 'tremendous father.' The couple has been seen together in recent months on high-profile date nights in New York City and Washington, D.C., despite persistent divorce rumors. Michelle also revealed she's currently in therapy and is 'transitioning' into a new phase of her life. The 'Becoming' author's remarks blend humor with introspection, offering insight into her evolving identity as a mother, wife, and public figure.

Can 'GTA VI' revive the videogame industry?

The global videogame market's growth rate is expected to improve marginally in 2025 from the previous year, according to a report from research firm Newzoo, seen exclusively by Reuters on Tuesday. Analysts and industry experts had projected a surge in industry growth this year due to the expected blockbuster launch of Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto VI and new consoles. However, the delay of the long-awaited title to next year and price hikes to videogame hardware, arising from tariffs, have made consumer spending uncertain. The global videogame market is projected to grow 3.4 per cent to $188.9 billion in 2025, compared with last year's growth of 3.2 per cent, according to the report. "This forecast reflects concrete changes, hardware cycles, pricing trends, install base growth, and title pipelines," said Michiel Buijsman, principle analyst at Newzoo. Compounded annually, Newzoo expects the market to grow 3.3 per cent till 2027, compared with its earlier forecast of 3.7 per cent As GTA VI is scheduled to launch in 2026, the industry will most likely see the boost from sales next year along with the release of other premium titles such as Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem. The launch of GTA VI on PC is also expected to carry growth through 2027, the report said. Price increases to Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation devices have sparked fears of slower hardware sales as consumers globally grapple with market uncertainty. Xbox also unveiled its own handheld console, the Xbox Ally, earlier this month, developed in partnership with ASUS and set to launch in holidays 2025. However, despite this uncertain trajectory of videogame uptake, earlier this month, as per AFP, the Switch 2 smashed records to become the fastest-selling console ever after gamers snapped up 3.5 million units in its first four days.

Portrait of Oasis brothers to go on sale in London

A 1996 portrait of brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher at the height of their Oasis fame heads to auction next week as the siblings prepare to start a series of reunion gigs, reported Reuters. Painted by US artist Elizabeth Peyton, Liam + Noel (Gallagher) is based on a promotional photograph of the siblings taken the year before and depicts them "in a moment of intimacy and repose", according to Sotheby's. Like the photo, the painting, which was made after Oasis' historic 1996 Knebworth gigs, depicts Liam resting his chin on Noel's shoulder. In the photo, Liam has his thumbs up, but not in the painting. The work is being offered at Sotheby's "Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction" in London on June 24 with a price estimate of 1.5 million to 2 million pounds ($2 million – $2.69 million). "It's a beautiful circular moment for the painting... This was made in 1996, on the eve of their then biggest ever concert at Knebworth," Antonia Gardner, head of Contemporary Evening Sale, told Reuters on Wednesday. "And now this is coming back into the market, coming back into the spotlight... on the eve of their incredible... tour." Oasis made their debut with 1994's Definitely Maybe before finding international stardom with their second studio album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? released in 1995. It went on to sell 22 million copies worldwide and was the band's breakthrough in the United States. As well as Liam + Noel (Gallagher), other paintings on offer at next week's sale include Tara de Lempicka's La Belle Rafaela and Pablo Picasso's Nu assis dans un fauteuil, both with estimates of 6 million – 9 million pounds. The Gallaghers' volatile relationship often made headlines. The group split in 2009 when lead guitarist and main songwriter Noel said he could no longer work with brother and frontman Liam after a number of public spats. However, last August, the brothers announced they would reunite for a series of gigs in the summer of 2025, bringing an end to years of speculation. The announcement marked a frenzy of fans rushing to book tickets online, resulting in ticket websites crashing, unable to cope with the surge in demand. News of the reunion tour also also led to instances of UK fans alleging they were scammed out of cash in exchange for gig tickets. According to details listed on the Ticketmaster website, the tour will see Oasis performing in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin from July to September. The concerts are due to kick off in Cardiff on July 4.
