No M'sians on board ill-fated Air India flight, foreign ministry confirms

PUTRAJAYA : The Malaysian consulate-general in Mumbai has confirmed that no Malaysians were on board Air India flight AI171 which crashed near Ahmedabad Airport.
Earlier, it was reported that the London-bound flight with 242 people on board, including 12 crew members, crashed on Thursday shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport in the western state of Gujarat.
Separately, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his condolences to the families and friends of all those affected by the crash.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he was deeply distressed to learn of the tragic crash.
'On behalf of the government and people of Malaysia, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected.
'We share in India's sorrow and stand in full solidarity as relief efforts continue. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and with everyone mourning this terrible loss.'
CNN, meanwhile, reported that the death toll from the plane crash had risen to 133.

PUTRAJAYA, June 13 — Social media platform Facebook is estimated to have generated between US$15 billion (RM63.68 billion) and US$20 billion (RM84.91 billion) in online advertising revenue in the Asean region last year, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the figure included advertisements suspected of promoting scams and online gambling to about 670 million users of the platform in the region. In Malaysia alone, Fahmi said Facebook generated an estimated RM2.5 billion in revenue last year. 'This is the problem we face — many of the ads they (Facebook) display are scam ads promoting fake investments or so-called 'magical' products that can be bought at very low prices. There's no control over this. 'In fact, just a few weeks ago, my team identified drug and vape (electronic cigarette) sales activities within Facebook groups,' he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly yesterday. Fahmi said that to date, Facebook had yet to cooperate with the government's social media platform licensing initiative enforced earlier this year. 'They (Facebook) still refuse to be licensed under the licensing system we announced. They are unwilling to cooperate in several areas,' he said. On January 1, the government officially enforced licensing under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), aimed at enhancing online safety, protecting users, and strengthening regulatory oversight of internet messaging service providers and social media platforms. The government's efforts did not stop there, as Parliament passed the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 last December, which will be enforced soon. 'With the enforcement of OnSA, social media platforms like Facebook will be required to comply. 'Issues such as paedophile groups and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) must be eliminated from these platforms, and those involved must be brought to justice,' he said. — Bernama

US reaffirms commitment to Asean ahead of Malaysia's key regional engagements

Kagan. -- Photo: The Star KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The United States (US) on Friday has reaffirmed its firm support for Asean's central role in regional affairs and expressed readiness to work closely with Malaysia, as the Asean Chair for 2025, ahead of a series of high-level Asean-related meetings to be hosted by the country later this year. US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan said Washington remains deeply invested in its engagement with Asean and is committed to working closely with Malaysia, particularly in the context of its Asean Chairmanship. "We expect to engage effectively in upcoming Asean related engagements,' Kagan told reporters during a press conference at his residence on Friday. The US has been an Asean Dialogue Partner since the bloc's founding in 1967 and has consistently supported its development. Kagan emphasised that the US intends to engage at the appropriate level and acknowledged Malaysia's strong track record as an effective leader in Asean. He praised Malaysia's longstanding and effective leadership within Asean, highlighting the country's consistent efforts in advancing the region's priorities and upholding the bloc's centrality. Meanwhile, Kagan dismissed claims that Southeast Asian nations are shifting closer to Beijing following recent US tariffs and China's growing regional diplomacy, including President Xi Jinping's April visits to Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia. "Countries in the region make their own decisions. They have long had strong ties with both the United States and China. We don't view those ties as mutually exclusive,' he said. The ambassador pointed to the robust US-Malaysia economic relationship as proof of Washington's continued engagement in the region, citing Malaysia's significant export volume to the US and the presence of American companies as evidence of deepening economic ties. "Exports to the US are extremely important, and I think that if people had questions about that, they have been reminded in recent months,' he said. Kagan also expressed confidence in the ongoing bilateral trade negotiations between the two countries, commending Malaysia's professionalism and commitment. "I just had the pleasure of seeing MITI Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Malaysia-European Free Trade Association partnership agreement could negatively impact many sectors, says CAP
PETALING JAYA: The proposed Malaysia-European Free Trade Association (Efta) Economic Partnership Agreement (Meepa) could have far-reaching consequences for public health, access to seeds, and farmers' rights, says the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP). Health policy advisor Dr Lim Chee Han stated that the leaked intellectual property (IP) annexe of the deal contains 'TRIPS-plus' provisions—rules that exceed the requirements under the World Trade Organisation's Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). These provisions, he explained, could lead to extended patent monopolies, restrict the government's ability to introduce affordable generic medicines, and increase the cost of essential drugs. 'Agreeing to TRIPS-plus measures ties the hands of our government. It restricts our ability to respond to public health needs and will drive up the cost of medicines, affecting access for patients who need life-saving treatment,' he said during the press conference on Friday (June 13). Lim also warned that the agreement would impact the country's food security and farmers' livelihoods. 'The provisions would undermine existing protections in our national laws that allow farmers to save, reuse, exchange, and sell their seeds. This threatens our local farming practices and long-term food sovereignty,' he said. He emphasised that Malaysia, as a net importer of intellectual property, stands to lose more than it gains. 'Efta countries, including Switzerland and Norway, represent a small market compared to Malaysia. Yet we are being asked to give up a lot, especially when the total population of Efta is less than half of ours,' he added. Lim urged the government not to rush into signing the deal and called for transparency in the negotiation process. 'The full text of Meepa must be released for public consultation and parliamentary scrutiny. We must retain our right to regulate in the public interest, especially in areas as vital as health and agriculture,' he said. Additionally, the group has submitted the memorandum to the Prime Minister's Department, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, and the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry.
