Deputy Chief Minister cum State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said project implementation is expected by mid-2026 under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). He told the Daily Express this in response to the latest updates on the long-awaited road project. Currently, only about 600 metres of the road from Simpang Empat roundabout is paved, while several kilometres remain gravel. Sepanggar Port tunnel resumes

Published on: Wednesday, April 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Apr 30, 2025 By: Sherell Jeffrey Text Size: A photo of the tunnel taken from Jabatan Kerja Raya Sabah Facebook. Kota Kinabalu: Traffic through the Sepanggar Port tunnel resumed within hours on Monday after an exhaust fan fell onto the roadway, triggering a temporary closure and social media concern. 'There is non-structural damage,' State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya told Daily Express on Monday. It is understood that at about 2.03pm, a passing lorry hit an overhead exhaust fan in the port-bound lane of the twin tunnel, sending the unit crashing onto the road surface. Authorities immediately closed the affected lane for safety inspections and repairs. Concession company crew worked quickly to remove the damaged fan unit, conduct structural assessments and clean debris from the roadway. The tunnel was fully reopened by 4.30pm. The twin tunnels, each measuring 600m x 450m, is an important link for heavy vehicles accessing Sabah's key port facility. While the brief closure caused some traffic disruptions, authorities noted that the structure remains sound. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
