Procurement process for two new Northlink ferries launched
The 'freight-flex' ferries, also known as Northern Isles Freight Vessels (NIFV), have been being developed by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd and naval architects Leadship Design and Consulting, and has been presented to Scottish government ministers and officials.
Ms Hyslop confirmed that the design will be the basis of a tendering process, with funding available in the 2025-26 budget.
Transport Scotland said that there is a 'potential' contract start on the freighter replacements next year.
The freighter-flex vessels will replace the aged Helliar and Hildasay, offering additonal freight capacity, quicker crossings and space for up to 200 passengers on board at peak times.

She said: 'The Scottish Government is fully committed to investing in all of our lifeline ferry services and so, I am pleased to see this progress in procuring two new freight flex vessels to serve the Northern Isles.
'These new vessels will have increased freight capacity, higher operating speeds, and additional capacity for passengers in peak season. This will enhance the efficiency and reliability of ferry services to best meet the needs of the businesses and communities in the Northern Isles for years to come.
'The start of this procurement is an important milestone in our plans to improve ferry services and I look forward to following the progress of this project over the coming months.'

CMAL chief executive Kevin Hobbs said the announcement marked an 'important step forward in strengthening the long-term resilience of the Northern Isles services.
'We look forward to receiving bids that demonstrate innovation, efficiency and the ability to deliver reliable vessels that will support a more adaptable and robust service for years to come,' he added.

'NorthLink Ferries welcomes the additional capacity that the freight flex vessels will provide, enabling us to continue to support the growth of the Northern Isles economies,' he told the Shetland Times.
Ms Roddick said: 'It is great news that CMAL is moving to procure two new freight vessels for Orkney and Shetland.
'This will make such a difference to capacity on the route and promote resilience even when there are issues with weather or other disruption.

We looked at how Martin could transform Rangers, in particular by recruiting trusted former players. Stewart said that they will pay close attention to the Scottish and English markets, as players there will have an understanding of the British game. But that won't stop them from scouting players further afield - the only condition being that they must ALREADY be suited to playing in Scotland, rather than trying to mould them into the finished product. He said: 'Having an understanding of the Scottish game I would say is a key factor because every league is unique and we can look at some of the fixtures that have to be played as part of the SPFL. 'Every ground has its nuances and every club has its nuances, so somebody that comes in with an understanding of that is a huge asset. 'Equally, when it comes to recruiting players having a knowledge of markets outside of Scotland and players outside of Scotland, and off-the-pitch talent outside of Scotland as well, is a huge advantage. According to The Insurance Emporium, Loch Awe is a good place for salmon, pike, and brown trout. The ruined Kilchurn Castle also provides a picturesque backdrop as you wait for a bite. The second and final loch included in the list of the top Scottish fishing spots is Loch Lomond. It is the largest loch in Scotland by surface area, covering 71 square kilometres, and is among the most iconic in the country alongside Loch Ness. There is a wide selection of fish that the experts suggest fishing at Loch Lomond, including salmon, pike, sea trout, chub, perch, and dace. It is recommended that fishers journey out onto the water by boat for the best chance of landing a bite. The most northerly point on Great Britain, Dunnet Head is famous for its spectacular coastal views. The northern spot was named as a top destination for skate and halibut fishing. Meanwhile, the Dunnet Head Fishing Club is the northernmost fishing club on mainland Scotland. Finally, the last location in Scotland that was named among the best for fishing is Stonehaven. Stonehaven is a picturesque town situated along the northeast coast of Scotland, around 15 miles out of Aberdeen. According to the experts, Stonehaven is a great place for cod and sea bass. They also state that flounder and mackerel can be found in its waters. Brand Scotland – UK Government signs agreement with Scottish Chambers of Commerce
A Brand Scotland overseas trade missions initiative was signed on Friday by the Scotland Office and Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) in a partnership agreement. This collaboration will be supported by UK Government funding of up to £100,000 for 2025/26 which will help to promote Scottish trade and is aimed at attracting foreign direct investment into Scotland. Brand Scotland is part of the UK Government's Plan for Change boosting economic growth by promoting Scottish products and services while attracting international inward investment. The initiative will include a series of trade missions all designed to showcase Scottish businesses across the globe. Ian Murray and Liz Cameron signed the agreement at the UK Government's Queen Elizabeth HQ in Edinburgh. Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: 'This agreement will help give Scotland a global platform to sell everything our brilliant country has to offer – from whisky and seafood to our world class services. 'The trio of trade deals secured by the Prime Minister in recent weeks is a huge opportunity for Scotland's economy – with the most populous country in the world, the richest country in the world and our most important market.
