The coolest bedding picks for hot summer nights
These essentials will help you wake up fresh, from airy linen sheets to low tog duvets
Temperatures are creeping up, and while sunny days mean floaty dresses, ice cream, and long evenings outside, the nights are a different story. If you've ever found yourself tossing and turning in a sticky, sweaty mess, you'll know that summer sleep can be anything but restful.
A good fan is always a smart place to start, but clever bedding upgrades can also make warm nights more bearable. Think breathable linen sheets, cooling pillows, low-tog duvets, and even cotton pyjamas designed to regulate body temperature while you sleep.
Scroll down for our top cooling bedding picks, which will keep shoppers fresh, dry, and comfortable on even the hottest nights.
Dunelm Cotton Bedding - from £24
Cotton is naturally breathable, soft on the skin and great at wicking away moisture, making it ideal for warm-weather sleeping. And while Egyptian cotton (like this luxe set from The White Company) is often seen as the gold standard thanks to its long fibres and silky feel, it can also come with a hefty price tag.
Thankfully, there are plenty of affordable cotton options that are still great. Dunelm has a brilliant selection in a range of colours and prints, and I've been seriously impressed with this reversible striped set, which is £34 for a double. It feels soft and smooth, looks far more expensive than it is, and has a 144 thread count - a decent figure that balances comfort and durability without bumping up the price.
The reversible design is a nice touch, too. It gives my bed a fresh look with a quick flip, which I love for a low-effort bedroom refresh. This is a great buy if you're after budget-friendly bedding that doesn't compromise on feel.
KEPLIN 2-Pack Large Cooling Gel Pillows - £7.49
These clever cooling pads are designed to slide neatly into pillowcases, instantly bringing a refreshing chill to bedtime - no fridge or freezer required. The gel activates on contact and stays cool long enough to help you drift off comfortably, especially useful during hot nights when even your pillow feels like a radiator.
They're also great for soothing migraines and tension headaches, making them surprisingly versatile for the price. However, some reviewers noted the pads can slip throughout the night, so they're better for those who don't toss and turn much.
Piglet in Bed Linen Bedding - from £39
Linen bedding is always a smart choice - not only is it temperature regulating, but it's also durable, breathable, moisture-wicking, and gets softer with every wash. As a shopping writer, I've tested countless linen sets, but I always circle back to one brand: Piglet in Bed.
Yes, these sheets are an investment (a linen bundle starts from £237), but in experience, the quality is unmatched. Made in Portugal, Piglet's bedding is woven from a luxurious blend of European flax linen and long-staple cotton, offering that perfect balance of softness and structure. Thoughtful details like coconut shell button fastenings add charm, while the fabric feels soft, breathable and incredibly comforting against the skin.
They also wash beautifully - no shrinking, no stiffness, just increasingly lived-in luxury. Every hue is beautifully muted and effortlessly chic, too. The calming Elderberry Stripe set is currently dressing my bed, adding a subtle statement to my room.
Otherwise, Bedfolk is another high-quality option. The sheets wash well and feel great, though they're also on the pricier side. Still, when it comes to bedding, I firmly believe you get what you pay for - and both of these brands deliver.
TEMPUR Cloud SmartCool™ Pillows - £139
These cushions, equipped with Tempur's SmartCool technology and removable covers, are designed to soak up excess heat, guaranteeing a comfortable, sweat-free slumber all night. Moreover, this extra firm memory foam pillow supports any sleeping position.
I've had these pillows since last summer and can vouch for their effectiveness. Initially, I was doubtful about Tempur's temperature-regulating claims, but they genuinely feel cool. They also adapted well to my neck and shoulders, relieving aches and pains.
The Fine Bedding Company Smart Temperature Pillow Protectors - £30.40 from £38
If you aren't quite ready to invest in a cooling pillow or are too loyal to your current one, cooling pillow protectors could be the next best thing. These ones, made with activated cooling technology, feel cool to the touch as soon as your head hits the pillow. Plus, they've got the practical perks of a standard protector, guarding against sweats, spills, and general wear.
I've had these protectors on my pillows for over a year now, and they're one of the best small home buys I've made. They genuinely feel cool, even without air conditioning, and they're machine washable, too. I rarely wake up with sweaty hair anymore, which, in the middle of a heatwave, is pretty priceless.
Slumberland All Seasons 9 + 4.5 TOG Duvet - from £49.99
Switching to a low tog duvet is a smart move in the summer. Lower tog ratings (think 4.5 or under) mean less insulation and a lighter, airier feel, helping you stay cool and comfortable on hot nights.
I've got this Slumberland duvet at home, and it's been a solid choice so far. It's lightweight enough that I don't wake up overheated, and it still has a soft, cosy feel that doesn't feel too bare. It's also machine washable, a big plus for everyday use.
Even better, it's a hybrid design - it comes with two layers (4.5 and 9 tog) that can be combined using press studs to create a 13.5-tog winter-ready duvet. That means I'll be covered all year round without needing to buy a second one - a win for comfort and budget.
However, if you're searching for something lighter, Dusk has a 2.5-tog duvet option. It's currently on sale, too, bringing a double size down to £24 from £40.
Boux Avenue Ditsy Cotton Cami Pyjama Set - £44
Now that bedding is sorted, a pair of lightweight pyjamas is worth considering. As mentioned, cotton is a great material to sleep in, thanks to its breathable and moisture-wicking properties, so it works just as well for nightwear as it does for sheets.
Earlier this year, I opted for a cotton camisole set (see picture above) from Boux Avenue's spring collection. These light pink jammies are the quintessence of classic spring aesthetics - delicate, sweet and utterly charming.
The intricate broderie and frill detailing make me feel like royalty, whilst the soft cotton material is lightweight and surprisingly luxurious. Additionally, the adjustable straps and elasticated waist provide added comfort. Most importantly, they don't leave me feeling overheated at night.
However, a word of caution for my larger-busted ladies - the camisole top fits my smaller chest comfortably, but I suspect those with a more ample bust might find themselves slipping out.

The lightweight duvet set comes in a range of colours and it's had a price drop too just in time for the warmer weather With summer just around the corner, it's time to ditch the winter bedding and give way to something lighter and brighter in anticipation of some good weather and warmer nights. Dunelm has a range of gingham bedding that is perfect to update your bedroom's aesthetic. It's Portloe Woven Gingham Duvet Cover & Pillowcase Set comes in nine colour schemes so you'll have no trouble finding one to match your room. And it's been given a price reduction too just ahead of the summer months. It's currently on sale for £28.80 for the double set instead of it's original price of £36. The king size set is £33.60, reduced from £42 if you have a bigger bed to furnish. In the colour ochre, it screams sunshine but this stand-out set is also available in black for the monochrome lovers, blush and orchid for a girly theme and a range of blue tones including Ashley and Folkstone. Gingham bed sets are readily available at this time of year as the pattern is the epitome of summer for home interiors. Dusk has the Gabriella Gingham 100% Cotton Duvet Cover and Pillowcase Set in the hue natural on sale for £34, down from £75.00. Meanwhile, Next's scalloped edge set is made by furn and comes in two colourways, pink and green. It's on sale for £36 on the Next website. Dunelm's Portloe set has had rave reviews from happy buyers. Some are so impressed they're buying multiple sets. With 243 reviews on Dunelm's site and a 4.5 out of 5 star rating, customers are thrilled with the quality and the look of the bedding. One said: "I love it. Its really great quality. I already own the green set for my double bed. Ordered the yellow for my spare room. Looks really cheerful. Washes well, no complaints." While another was planning on buying again. They said: "Amazing quality, feels soft against skin, rich colour, definitely going to buy another set." And another fan raved: "I purchased the green in bedding and matching curtains for our guest room and loved it so much that I purchased the black for our bedroom too. It looks amazing, washes well and is extremely comfortable to sleep in plus gingham is always so welcoming to look at." One customer said: "Gorgeous colours, lovely gingham texture, cotton fresh. I bought the yellow and it's a burst of sunshine!" And another happy shopper called it the 'gingham set of dreams' and added: "The colour is such a pretty shade of pink, and the fabric is so soft and comfortable. This is budget friendly and to be honest looks like it cost a lot more!" Some customers were disappointed in the fabric, however. One said: "Don't buy this set unless you are a fan of either a crumpled bed or of serious ironing. I fully expected to have to run an iron over it, after washing it, but this was hard work. " And another found the dimensions were too big for her duvet saying: "Duvet cover too big for our duvet which is such a shame. It looks nice but cut too big for a king size duvet so lots of excess cover."

'Luxurious' Dunelm bedding that's 'soft and snuggly' gets 20% price cut in sale
'Love this bedding, great quality, velvet material, vibrant colours and washes well! Well worth the money.' For those who want to change up the style and vibe of their bedroom, all they need to do is switch up their bedding. As there are so many different styles of bedding out there, simply switching from a checkered style to a vibrant floral pattern can have a big impact. For those in need of some new bed clothes, Dunelm is currently holding its summer sale, which is seeing some popular items get price cuts as big as 50 per cent. With loads of bedding included in the sale, shoppers are spoilt for choice. For those looking for something vibrant, Dunelm has slashed the price of the Tropical Treasures Duvet Cover & Pillowcase Set. Usually retailing for between £36 and £52, the homeware retailer has taken a 20 per cent slash to every bedding size. Shoppers can now snatch up the single for £28.80 and the double for £33.60. For those who own a king size or super king bed, the prices are slightly higher at £38.40 and £41.60 respectively. Dunelm promises that this Treasures Bedding set will transform a bedroom into a lush oasis, due to its stylish tropical pattern, reports The Mirror. Crafted from recycled polyester, the botanical design will infuse your space with colours and natural beauty. Including matching pillowcases for a cohesive look, the bedding features a secure button closure to ensure that the duvet stays in place during the night. Additionally, for those who want to complete the aesthetic, Dunelm is also selling a range of items in the same design, including pillows and curtains. Tropical Treasures Duvet Cover & Pillowcase Set £36 - £52 £28.80 - £41.60 Dunelm Buy Now Product Description Another gorgeous set in the Dunelm sale is the Watercolour Circles Teal Duvet Cover and Pillowcase Set. Normally retailing for between £14 and £30, shoppers can snap up this calming set for the slightly cheaper prices of £11.20 to £24. Alternatively, Argos is also selling their Home Cotton Botanical Floral White Bedding Set. The single is retailing for £20, the double is £24 and the king size is £28. Unfortunately, there is not a super king size available. This reversible set has a floral design on one side and a beautiful teal colour on the reverse. Back to Dunelm's Tropical Bedding, shoppers have awarded the set an almost perfect rating of 4.8 stars. On top of this, of the 65 reviews, 58 of them gave the vibrant set five-stars. One delighted shopper said: "Love this bedding, great quality, velvet material, vibrant colours and washes well! Well worth the money." With another happy shopper adding: "Absolutely beautiful duvet set. Luxurious, great to sleep in and a great price. I loved it soo much I purchased the curtains to match. I would highly recommend this product." However, one shopper wasn't impressed, writing: "The quality and colours look and feel lovely, but after one wash a noticeable change in colour fading which was very disappointing." With a four-star reviewer noting: "Only one minor criticism, and that's the way my duvet moves around inside it. Every morning I have to work out where the corners have gone because it's no longer sitting straight inside the cover. "This is probably because the duvet has the patterned textured side and a lighter weight smoother underside. It was annoying at first, but I've got used to it." On the flip side, a five-star reviewer commented: "These feel luxuriously soft and beautifully made. With the matching cushions and curtains, this design has made a drab room look great!" While a sixth shopper added: "Very luxurious and great quality! Can't wait to get in to bed each night. Best purchase I've made in a long time! The material is beautifully soft and snuggly."
