Humanitarian workers killed in Gaza bus ambush

The Suna day ago

JERUSALEM/CAIRO: At least eight Palestinians who worked for the U.S-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation died in an ambush, the GHF said on Thursday, blaming Hamas militants for the killings that rocked the troubled food distribution operation.
A bus carrying about two dozen GHF workers was raked with gunfire on Wednesday night as it headed to an aid centre in southern Gaza, the foundation said, adding that many of its staff were injured and some might have been kidnapped.
Separately, the local health authority said 103 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire and 400 wounded in the past 24 hours across the battered enclave -- including 21 people killed this morning near GHF sites.
GHF's interim director John Acree said his organisation had considered closing its centres on Thursday following the bus attack, but opted to remain open.
'We decided that the best response to Hamas' cowardly murderers was to keep delivering food for the people of Gaza who are counting on us,' he said in a statement.
Hamas declined to comment on the shootings.
Social media channels in Gaza said Hamas had targeted the bus because it was allegedly carrying GHF workers tied to Yasser Abu Shabab, the leader of a large clan that has challenged Hamas's supremacy in the enclave and is being armed by Israel.
Abu Shabab released a statement on his Facebook page denouncing images posted on social media showing Gazans allegedly killed by Hamas and as it seeks to maintain power.
'Rumours of executions and killings are being spread by the corrupt, mercenaries, and criminals of Hamas in an attempt to sow fear in the hearts of those who seek change and liberation from terrorism, oppression, and its unjust rule,' he said.
RECORD MEAL DISTRIBUTION
The Israeli military said it was continuing to target Hamas fighters in Gaza, killing three militants who fired an anti-tank missile towards its soldiers, and hitting a building near a medical centre that it said was being used to make weapons.
It also said it had arrested several Hamas members in Syria overnight, accusing them of planning to attack Israelis.
Israel has fought for more than 20 months to eliminate Hamas after it launched deadly attacks October 7, 2023 that ignited the war. All efforts to end the conflict through negotiations have failed.
Despite the bus attack, GHF said it handed out 2.6 million meals on Thursday -- a daily record since it started operations in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of food distribution that the United Nations says is deeply flawed.
'This model will not address the deepening hunger. The dystopian 'Hunger Games' cannot become the new reality,' Philippe Lazzarini, the chief of the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), wrote on X.
'The UN including @UNRWA has the knowledge, expertise & community trust to provide dignified & safe assistance. Just let the humanitarians do their jobs,' he added.
Israel has repeatedly called for UNRWA to be disbanded, accusing it of having ties with Hamas. UNRWA has denied this.
Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says more than 180 people have been killed by Israeli fire near the aid centres over the past three weeks, as the aid effort repeatedly degenerated into chaos and terror with locals scrabbling for limited supplies.
Israel has contested the death tally, accusing Hamas of causing much of the mayhem.
Besides the GHF distribution effort, Israel is also letting into Gaza trucks carrying flour for the handful of bakeries that are still operating.
For the first time in months, Israel allowed humanitarian trucks to enter northern Gaza directly overnight -- with 56 lorries carrying supplies from the U.N.'s World Food Programme crossing into the largely devastated region.

Comms minister: Facebook raked in RM85b Asean ad revenue but still behind on scams, gambling controls

PUTRAJAYA, June 13 — Social media platform Facebook is estimated to have generated between US$15 billion (RM63.68 billion) and US$20 billion (RM84.91 billion) in online advertising revenue in the Asean region last year, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the figure included advertisements suspected of promoting scams and online gambling to about 670 million users of the platform in the region. In Malaysia alone, Fahmi said Facebook generated an estimated RM2.5 billion in revenue last year. 'This is the problem we face — many of the ads they (Facebook) display are scam ads promoting fake investments or so-called 'magical' products that can be bought at very low prices. There's no control over this. 'In fact, just a few weeks ago, my team identified drug and vape (electronic cigarette) sales activities within Facebook groups,' he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly yesterday. Fahmi said that to date, Facebook had yet to cooperate with the government's social media platform licensing initiative enforced earlier this year. 'They (Facebook) still refuse to be licensed under the licensing system we announced. They are unwilling to cooperate in several areas,' he said. On January 1, the government officially enforced licensing under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), aimed at enhancing online safety, protecting users, and strengthening regulatory oversight of internet messaging service providers and social media platforms. The government's efforts did not stop there, as Parliament passed the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 last December, which will be enforced soon. 'With the enforcement of OnSA, social media platforms like Facebook will be required to comply. 'Issues such as paedophile groups and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) must be eliminated from these platforms, and those involved must be brought to justice,' he said. — Bernama

Police receive report from lorry driver involved in Kempas toll booth brawl

JOHOR BARU: Police have received a report from one of the two men involved in an altercation which took place at the Kempas toll booth on June 8 at 2.30pm. Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the report was lodged by the 31-year-old local man at 5.35pm on the same day the incident happened. He said the physical intimidation involved the 31-year-old lorry driver and an unidentified man, believed to be a passenger of a Proton Wira car. 'Our initial investigation found the lorry driver had honked at the car in front of him at the toll lane,'' ACP Balveer said in a statement on Friday (June 13). He said the lorry driver had done that as the driver of the car did not move after paying his toll, although the toll barrier had lifted. ACP Balveer said, angered by the sound of the horn, a man exited from the car's passenger seat and approached the lorry to confront the driver. 'The man demanded that the lorry driver open the door. Once it was opened, the man entered the lorry and hit the driver's face and head several times,'' he added. ACP Balveer said the lorry driver retaliated in self-defence by kicking the man, forcing the man to leave. He said the video of the incident was uploaded by a Facebook account holder 'Ingat Mati' at share/v/1YTaPrs4 ACP Balveer said the case is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code. He also called upon those with information on the incident to call the Johor Baru North Police Contingent at 07-5563122.

IPOH: The police will take the statement of a teacher believed to have made an obscene post on social media about the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik this Monday (June 16). Manjung district police chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the teacher, a man teaching in a school in Perak, will provide his statement at the Manjung district police headquarters. 'We will record his statement on June 16 during the appointment made with him,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. Hasbullah said in a statement yesterday that the police had opened two investigation papers over the matter under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
