Heatwave triggers reservoir swimming warning
People are being warned not to be tempted to swim in reservoirs in the hot weather with a water firm describing the idea as "incredibly dangerous".
Doug Clarke, from Severn Trent Water, said the waters were deep, cold and contained lots of hazards including rocks and pipework.
His warning came as forecasts predicted the UK heatwave to intensify over the weekend with temperatures potentially reaching 34C in some parts of the country.
Speaking at Tittesworth Reservoir, near Leek in Staffordshire, Mr Clarke told BBC Radio Stoke: "We never encourage swimming in the reservoirs for a number of reasons.
"They're very deep, very cold and there are lots of hazards in there – lots of rocks around the water's edge, it's quite muddy and there's even some of our pipework in there."
He urged people to visit and enjoy the beauty spot by having picnics and walks around the site but "no swimming".
"It's incredibly cold and incredibly dangerous, even for the strongest swimmers," he added.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for parts of northern England, the Midlands and Wales from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.
It came after an amber heat-health alert was issued in England by the UK Health Security Agency, which will remain in force until Monday.
Mr Clarke said the dry weather over the spring had left Tittesworth Reservoir at about 63% of its maximum water level which he described as "lower than you'd expect" at this time of year.
"It's not too much of a worry as this is one of many sources that supply this area," he added.

Extreme Heat Warning in effect from Sunday through Wednesday for the Pittsburgh area
After a few scattered showers and storms Friday evening, conditions begin dry with mostly cloudy skies across Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia. A thunderstorm complex moving around the periphery of our developing heat ridge will likely bypass us to the northeast today, with a low chance of a shower or storm northeast of Pittsburgh up to the I-80 corridor. The rest of our area should see mostly cloudy skies this morning with decreasing clouds and temperatures heating up by late afternoon with highs in the upper 80s. High temperatures and rain chances on Saturday in Western Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center Our first bout of excessive heat of the summer builds in starting Sunday as a strong ridge of high pressure aloft in the atmosphere, a.k.a. a "heat dome," shifts from the Central US to the Eastern US. Dangerous, potentially record breaking, heat building in
Welcome to the weekend! Heat is building in and will be reaching potentially dangerous and record-breaking levels starting on Sunday. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has issued a string of Alert Days for the extreme heat starting Sunday into the middle of the upcoming week. Saturday, however, will still be hot but not as much as we'll see starting Sunday. High temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s. Feels like temperatures peak in the mid to upper 90s this afternoon. The second day of AFRAM will be the first of a string of Alert Days. High temperatures peak closer to 100° for the first time this year. This will be very similar to what we felt during AFRAM last year. When you factor in the humidity, it'll feel like the low to mid-100s. Monday and Tuesday look to be slightly hotter (and most likely the worst days of the stretch). Wednesday will be a couple of degrees 'cooler' - back into the upper 90s but the high humidity will push the feels like temperature/heat index over 100° again. The heat wave will continue into the late week as highs continue to surpass 90° Thursday and Friday. Storm chances return later this week and that could provide some slight relief.
