Court denies bail to man accused of cheating by impersonating Delhi CM's aide
Observing that 'economic offences are serious in nature,' a sessions court last week rejected a bail plea of a man booked for cheating a city-based businessman of Rs. 8.74 lakh under the garb of securing a tender for him claiming that he had a 'close acquaintance' with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
While an additional sessions judge passed an order on bail application by one Sunny Gupta on June 13, the detailed court order was made available on Monday.
The Mumbai Police, through its Azad Maidan Police station had on May 7 arrested Sunny Bhadri Gupta alias Manish Singh under the offences of cheating and criminal intimidation, based on a complaint filed by a businessman Kundan Singh.
As per prosecution, in March, this year, Singh met Gupta at a programme organised at a friend's residence in Andheri (West) area, where Singh informed Gupta about a print media tender issued by Delhi Tourism department, and that he was making efforts to secure the same.
In response, Gupta allegedly responded that he had 'close acquaintance' with Delhi CM Rekha Gupta and assured Singh that he could arrange an introduction and assist him in procuring the tender.
On March 26, Gupta allegedly told Singh that in order to secure the tender, it would be necessary to present gifts, expensive clothes, gold ornaments and cash of Rs 5 to 6 lakhs to the Delhi CM.
The complainant further said that when he inquired whether the tender would be definitely awarded to him, Gupta gave an assurance and made a phone call in Singh's presence, purporting to discuss the tender.
As per Singh, the bail applicant displayed caller ID on his mobile screen which showed the name 'Rekha Gupta,' which led Singh to believe that the applicant had genuine access and influence and which would indeed help secure the tender as promised.
Thereafter, as per complaint, Singh paid Rs. 8.74 lakh to Gupta through different transactions including gifts, expensive clothes, gold ornaments and online payments and the transactions were allegedly carried out in presence of Singh's friend.
On March 31, Singh and Gupta were to visit Delhi for work related to the concerned tender, however, as per complainant, Gupta did not accompany him.
After reaching Delhi, Singh contacted Gupta, but did not receive any response, after which he returned to Mumbai. As per Singh, he then demanded returned money, but Gupta allegedly failed to repay the same and instead sent death threats to Singh, prompting him to lodge a police complaint.
Gupta claimed that he never received any money from Singh and he was falsely implicated in the case, therefore he should be released on bail.
After perusing submissions, the court noted that the amount in question was not received till date and investigation was still on.
'In such circumstances, if the applicant/accused is released on bail, there is a possibility that he may tamper with evidence which may hamper prosecution.. It is not proper to release the applicant/accused on bail at this stage,' the court held and rejected bail plea.

Arrested naib tehsildar in Punjab's Hoshiarpur earned Rs 3.6cr over 9 years, but spent Rs 11.2cr
1 2 Jalandhar: The vigilance bureau on Tuesday claimed to have arrested naib tehsildar Varinderpal Singh Dhoot, a resident of Dhoot Kalan in Hoshiarpur, for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. A vigilance bureau spokesperson said the arrest followed an inquiry conducted by the probe agency's Jalandhar range into the allegations of Dhoot accumulating wealth beyond his legitimate earnings – in his own name and through family members. The spokesperson further said the probe covered the period from Jan 1, 2009, to Dec 31, 2018. Investigations revealed that Dhoot's total income from known sources during this period was over Rs 3.58 crore. However, his total expenditure and assets acquired amounted to Rs 11.18 crore, which is 211.54% more than his lawful income. This substantial disparity established that Dhoot, while serving as a public servant, acquired immovable and moveable assets and spent funds far exceeding his legitimate earnings, thereby violating anti-corruption laws, informed the spokesperson. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Dhoot at vigilance bureau police station, Jalandhar Range, the spokesperson added.

PWD minister orders probe into work order delay for new Kund Mala bridge after predecessor demands inquiry
Pune: Maharashtra's minister for public works department (PWD) Shivendraraje Bhosale on Tuesday said that govt has initiated an inquiry into the delay in issuing a work order for the new bridge across the Indrayani River in Kund Mala after his predecessor Ravindra Chavan, who is now the state BJP working president, demanded a probe. Bhosale told TOI, "We have called for all records and files related to the new bridge proposal for scrutiny." Chavan, who sanctioned Rs8 crore last July for the project, said that a thorough inquiry was needed to find out why there was a delay in issuing the work order. "If people died due to delays on our part, it is unacceptable," he added. Govt issued the work order on June 10, this year, after 11 months. The old footbridge collapsed on Sunday, killing four people and injuring 54 others. The former PWD minister told reporters in Mumbai, "The tendering process for the bridge was completed before the assembly election last year when I was the PWD minister and provisions were made in the supplementary budget. PWD also issued directives to complete the project within one year after administrative approval was received on July 24 last year." He said that he spoke to Bhosale and PWD officials to know if there was a delay from govt side because the tendering process was already completed. The bridge, which was declared 'dangerous' and had boards put up for people to avoid using it, was overcrowded with tourists when it gave way, plunging several into the Indrayani River. Earlier, members of the opposition shared a letter issued by Chavan last year stating that govt sanctioned Rs 8 crore for the new bridge. Activist Vijay Kumbhar, who shared the details of the tendering process for the new bridge, said that the tender for the new bridge was floated on Oct 4, 2024, and it was opened within eight days on Oct 12. However, govt took over eight months to issue the work order, he added. "If work had commenced immediately, this tragedy could have been prevented. Even if we consider the absence of a functioning govt during the election period, the new govt was in place by Dec. There was no justification for a delay of six more months. All officials involved in the process must be held accountable for this delay," Kumbhar said.

Waghodia man held for procuring bank accounts for cyberfraud
Rajkot: A Morbi cybercrime police team arrested one Vipul Thakur (26) from Waghodia taluka of Vadodara district on Monday. Police say Thakur played a central role in getting people from various parts of Gujarat to 'rent out' their bank accounts, which were then used for cybercrime. He received a 2% commission on transactions that used these accounts. K K Darbar, inspector of Cybercrime police station in Morbi, said, "The cybercriminals recruit one principal person in each state to get bank accounts. Thakur was handling Gujarat. There were people working under him to find those whose bank accounts could be used in lieu of money." Police had earlier detained several individuals responsible for persuading people to allow their accounts to be used, leading to the identification of Thakur. Police say Thakur may be involved in multiple cyberfraud cases throughout Gujarat, with more details expected to emerge during his four-day custodial interrogation. This investigation began after a Morbi trader was cheated out of Rs 1.51 crore. The trader was contacted by cybercriminals via Facebook Messenger and was persuaded to 'invest in' cryptocurrency, with the promise of high returns. He was tricked into opening an account on a fictitious portal and depositing money into various bank accounts. On realizing he had been duped, the trader reported the fraud to police.
