Braille & Brew event boosts independence for the visually impaired
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Louisiana Association for the Blind (L.A.B.) wants you to have fun while giving them support.
Louisiana woman earns master's degree at 54 despite being blind
Braille & Brew returns for the third year at The Seventh Tap in Shreveport.
Attendees will enjoy a guided, immersive experience by wearing blindfolds while drinking craft beers and tasting 'aromatic and texturally complex foods.'
The Louisiana Association for the Blind has been in operation since it was founded by the Lions Club in 1927. The original mission was simply to train and employ the blind to make and sell brooms.
Donors needed for Caddo Parish blood drive hosted by CPSO
Today, L.A.B. offers low vision exams, children's programs, independent living skills instruction, assistive technology and assessments, job training, and employment placement. The goal is to help blind or visually impaired people become more independent.
Braille & Brew takes place on June 12 at 6 p.m. Funds raised will be used to improve the quality of life for people who are visually impaired.

As part of a nationwide tour, the race traveled to several cities across the United States, with the Shreveport event taking place at Southern Hills Park. ‘Beyond Camp' gives students a summer of discovery and support
CADDO PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS)—For more than twenty years, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Services Program in Caddo Parish has hosted Beyond Camp, a summer camp designed specifically for students experiencing homelessness. It offers them a season full of enrichment, exploration, and support. 'Beyond Camp is a federally funded program created to support students who are experiencing homelessness by giving them experiences and opportunities they might not otherwise have,' said Dr. Norcha Lacy, Supervisor of the McKinney-Vento Program for Caddo Parish Schools. Support children's hospitals through 'Spark Good' health campaign 'When we asked them what their favorite part was, they all said the field trips, because they went on one every day. They were able to experience things they wouldn't normally be able to experience in their normal lives, so we provide those experiences and opportunities for them during our camp,' Dr. Lacy shared. From hands-on learning to daily adventures, the camp allows children to learn, grow, and enjoy being kids during summer. BPCC sees record number of dual enrollment graduates
BOSSIER PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — A record number of high school students have earned degrees through Bossier Parish Community College's dual-enrollment program. Disney on Ice to debut characters from 'Moana 2' and 'Inside Out 2' The dual enrollment program enables eligible students to earn college credits before they graduate from high school. According to BPCC, 112 high school students from North Louisiana graduated from the college. The most popular programs among these graduates included an associate degree in general studies, electrician technology, emergency medical technician training, nursing assistant, and welding. 'This achievement highlights the incredible opportunities that dual enrollment provides, and we couldn't be prouder, ' said Jamie Hilburn, BPCC's dual enrollment coordinator. While many students across the region participated, the most active engagement for the program came from Bienville, Sabine, Natchitoches, and DeSoto parish schools.
