Controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios not part of BBC Wimbledon coverage
Controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios has reportedly been dropped from BBC's Wimbledon coverage this year amid huge backlash after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari. The Australian star worked as a pundit for the broadcaster during last year's tournament, a decision which caused outrage after he admitted assaulting Passari during an incident in 2021. Now according to the Telegraph, he will no longer be part of their coverage. However, a source close to Kyrgios claimed that he planned to enter the tournament this year - after missing the 2024 edition - and had never planned to be involved as a pundit. That was before Kyrgios was ruled out of the competition due to injury after suffering a "small setback" in his recovery. "Just wanted to give everyone a quick update," he said last week. "I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass this year. I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. "This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever. Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!" The Telegraph's report also claimed Kyrgios would not appear as a pundit for ESPN's coverage of Wimbledon either. Women's charities such as Reclaim These Streets and Women's Aid were among those who had deplored the decision to hire Kyrgios as a pundit after he previously shared posts from controversial internet personality Andrew Tate - who has come under fire for his misogynistic views. and will bring you the very latest updates, pictures and video as soon as possible. And according to The Telegraph, the outspoken star will not be part of the BBC's coverage of the Grand Slam tournament this year. The 30-year-old had been hoping to play in the tournament for the first time since losing the 2022 final to Novak Djokovic. However, the tennis bad boy confirmed he would not be appearing because of a recurring injury. Taking to Instagram, he said: "Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – l've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year. "I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. "This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever. 'Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!" In fact, he will also not fulfil a punditry role on American broadcaster ESPN. Kyrgios has worked with ESPN for the last two years during the first slam of the year, the Australian Open. His hiring by the BBC last year was met with criticism by senior MPs and women's campaigners. Caroline Nokes, the women and equalities committee chair, blasted that the broadcaster should "hang its head in shame" for the decision. A BBC statement at the time said: "We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only. "He has provided similar services to other major sports broadcasters in recent months. "The legal process he was involved in has concluded, is well documented, and he has spoken about it publicly." Kyrgios admitted to assaulting an ex-girlfriend in February 2023. However, a magistrate in Canberra, Australia, said the incident was 'a single act of stupidity or frustration,' and spared him from getting a criminal record. THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.. Dundee United make Zac Sapsford first summer signing at Tannadice
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin believes the signing of Zac Sapsford is 'a terrific piece of business' and expects the striker to thrive at Tannadice. The club has completed the signing of the Australian forward from Western Sydney Wanderers, and Sapsford has signed a three-year deal, subject to international clearance. The 22-year-old played for a number of youth teams in Sydney, and was capped by his country at under-17 level, before making his professional debut with Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022. Since then he has established himself as a regular first team goalscorer, and United say his performances were picked up by data tracking before traditional scout reports convinced them to make a move. Goodwin believes he has a lot to offer and will get United fans on their feet. 'The addition of Zac represents a terrific piece of business for the club – to have a player of his calibre secured so early in the window is incredibly satisfying,' he said. 'He's a dynamic forward with a killer instinct in the final third off both feet or with his head, and also has the awareness to intelligently bring his teammates into play. 'We feel he's someone that will get our supporters out of their seats and we can rely on in big moments given his mentality and track record in those situations. 'Zac immediately bought into our vision for him and his development – I'm looking forward to closely monitoring his progression during his time in tangerine.' United's head of recruitment Ross Goodwin said: 'Zac was a player who piqued our interest after being flagged by the clubs internal data models, and impressed when we followed this up with more traditional scouting methods. 'These new processes combined with conventional, in-person talent ID will be pivotal in identifying new additions throughout the summer and beyond. 'We fought off stiff competition from across the globe for his signature, so we're incredibly pleased to have the deal over the line so early in the window, and we look forward to unveiling more exciting new signings for United fans to enjoy watching throughout the forthcoming seasons.'
