How long is food good for in the fridge during a power outage? Allegheny County health expert explains.

CBS News30-04-2025

Many neighborhoods across the region have been without power for 24 hours now after Tuesday's storm, leaving many trying to find ways to keep their food cold in the refrigerator.
KDKA-TV talked to several residents in the Pleasant Hills area who were on the search for post-storm supplies like ice or generators.
"Last night, picked up a quarter cow of beef from a rancher. I have a freezer that isn't working. I've been trying to buy ice like crazy to pack it and save it," said Sue from Bethel Park.
Sue said she lost her power around 5:30 Tuesday and her first stop for ice at the Walmart on Century Drive in West Mifflin was unsuccessful. Both Walmart and Sam's Club have been closed due to no power.
"I struck out here so I'm going to keep looking. Gotta save the cow!" Sue said.
How long does food last without power?
Allegheny County's Food Safety program manager Amanda Mater told KDKA-TV that when it comes to freezer items, food could be safe for up to 48 hours.
"If you keep the doors closed, that food could be safe if the freezer is completely full up to 48 hours but if the freezer is only half full, then food could remain frozen and safe up to 24 hours," Mater said.
Mater said anything after four hours without power in the fridge, at this point, would be unsafe.
"We go based off of temperature of the food, and really, if foods are above 40 degrees for an extended period of time, then they really are unsafe to eat at that time," Mater said.
Unsafe items in the refrigerator include milk, eggs, cheese, lunch meat and leftovers.
"Anything that has unusual color, texture, odor, definitely, those are some of the signs that the food is unsafe," Mater said.
She said when in doubt, throw it out.
For those using a cooler with ice to keep food cold, Mater said it's important to make sure the ice is draining.
"You don't really want any of your food just stored in standing water. That can also pose a risk as well," Mater said.
Experts said another option to keep items cold from the freezer or fridge would be to buy dry ice.
Pittsburghers scramble to find places with power
As of Tuesday afternoon, Duquesne Light is reporting that full power restoration will take five to seven days, but many people will have power back before then. The announcement sent many residents out on Tuesday afternoon searching for a generator.
"I was going to buy a generator because my wife just called and told me, and she's out traveling. On Facebook, saying five to seven days is what Duquesne power, saying it may take to restore all the power," said Pleasant Hills resident Mike Sauter.
Sauter said he's been trying to find ways to keep his phone charged in the meantime.
"Battery pack is drained. Phone is charged. But I was hoping to find a restaurant to charge the battery pack and charge the phone," Sauter said.
But he said finding a place to eat and charge his devices has become a challenge between restaurants that are closed without power and wait times at the ones that are open.
"They're telling you it's anywhere from 45 minutes, an hour and a half, wait to get a seat, to get food," Sauter said.
KDKA-TV saw several businesses in the Pleasant Hills area that were using generators to keep the doors open. Something Sauter hopes to find soon once he finds a store that is open to buy from.
"I'll drive to an area where they do have power and try to buy a generator. Yeah. Because if it's going to be five to seven days, we got a freezer down the basement that's got several $1,000 worth of frozen food in it," Sauter said.
KDKA-TV reached out to Walmart and Sam's Club to learn how soon they could reopen and if they'll have to throw away their food supply due to no power. In a statement, Walmart said, "We're working to reopen as soon as possible." People can see which Walmarts and Sam's Clubs are open online.

Pittsburgh will see periods of rain with potential localized flooding in some regions

Storms brought very heavy rain to portions of Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia on Saturday. Isolated 1-3"+ swaths of rain occurred along our I-80 counties and in portions of Washington and Monongalia counties, which prompted flash flood warnings. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos There were reports of water rescues and flooded properties around the South Strabane area in Washington County late Saturday night, but water levels have since receded in that area. Similar to what occurred yesterday, we expect a very similar setup once again for Sunday afternoon, with some locations completely missing rain, while others get drenched and face a flash flood threat. Watches and warnings in our area on Sunday KDKA Weather Center Sunday morning begins with plenty of dense fog along the I-79 and straddling most of the Ohio Valley. This fog is expected to continue through around 9 a.m. Moisture levels remain very high, not only near the ground, but throughout a large depth of the atmosphere this morning and will continue to do so through the afternoon. A parameter we look at to assess the amount of moisture in the atmosphere is expected to creep up to the 90th percentile later this afternoon for areas near and especially southwest of Pittsburgh. Low temperatures and rain chances expected on Sunday evening. KDKA Weather Center While this doesn't guarantee everyone will see a washout, these slow-moving scattered storms that do form will produce very heavy rain and flooding in spots. In fact, most areas north of Highway 422 toward I-80 may stay completely dry today. The timing window of today's rain will occur between 12 p.m.- 9 p.m. Flash flooding will be a concern for locations that receive greater than 0.75"-1" of rain within an hour. High temperatures and rain chances on Monday KDKA Weather Center The highest rainfall amounts—again in isolated, localized areas—could reach 3-4+". Once we lose daytime heating, any thunderstorms that are ongoing will fall apart after sunset with mostly cloudy skies and a few remnant showers tonight into Monday morning. Patchy dense fog is expected again before we heat up and isolated to widely scattered storms form during the midday and evening hours of Monday. Highs will reach the upper 70s to low 80s. The biggest change in the forecast has been to increase rain chances for this upcoming Tuesday. All model guidance has started trending toward showing a wave of low pressure moving in from the west early Tuesday morning into Tuesday afternoon. This system would provide lift in an already very moist atmosphere to produce more heavy rain and localized flooding. Rain chances over the next seven days KDKA Weather Center Most of the rain on Tuesday will likely occur from the late morning through mid-afternoon hours. This system will move east by Wednesday, leading to a lower coverage of rain during the day. Southwest winds will bring in very warm & humid air ahead of another stronger storm system and cold front Wednesday night into Thursday. This will carry a risk of severe storms and flash flooding. Slightly drier and cooler air will filter in on Friday. 7-day forecast: June 15, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Periods of rain and storms with some localized flooding possible in Pittsburgh this weekend

Parts of Western Pennsylvania received some very heavy rain through the overnight hours. A swath of 1-4+" occurred from areas near Plum to Vandergrift to Indiana, which resulted in a Flash Flood Warning being issued in those areas during the overnight hours. There was also a maximum of heavy rain with radar estimates of 1-3" around the New Castle area. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos This morning, a stalled frontal boundary continues to remain in place across Western Pennsylvania, with the boundary draped between I-70 and HW 422. A weak low-level wind just above the surface continues to transport rich moisture into the frontal zone, resulting in rising air and waves of showers and thunderstorms. Flood watch in place for areas in Western Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center For Saturday morning through early afternoon, we expect a numerous to widespread coverage of rain and storms from roughly the Pittsburgh metro area north toward I-80. After 12-1 p.m., the coverage for areas north of Pittsburgh will start to slowly diminish, with more scattered storms developing south of Pittsburgh toward I-70 & I-68. Timing and coverage of rain in our region on Saturday through Sunday KDKA Weather Center Any of these cells will produce locally heavy rainfall with the potential for flash flooding. As of now, high-resolution modeling suggests a zone of 1-3" occurring between Pittsburgh and I-80 through early Saturday afternoon. This zone could shift depending on storm behavior, and if the front shifts slightly, but folks should be on the lookout for flash flooding. A Flood Watch is in effect until 4 p.m. for Clarion, Venango, Forest, and Jefferson counties. High temperatures and rain chances for Sunday, June 15, 2025 KDKA Weather Center For Saturday night into Sunday, the best chance of rain and storms will start to shift toward our southern counties. There will likely be some patchy fog on Sunday morning as well. By midday Sunday into Sunday afternoon, the best chance for rain will likely align from Pittsburgh and points south toward our I-70 and I-68 counties. Rainfall expected through Sunday evening KDKA Weather Center Coverage will be more scattered on Sunday compared to Saturday, so not everyone will see rain, but those that do could easily receive a quick 1-2" with the potential of localized flooding. Rain and storm chances will be lowest next Monday and Tuesday as we won't have much of a strong trigger or source of lift in our area. Isolated showers and storms will develop during the heat of the day. However, models are suggesting we move into a pattern by mid-late next week that will deliver a stronger jet stream punch and a trough of low pressure by Wednesday and Thursday. This will amp up rain chances once again, and possibly a few strong to severe storms. A push of drier air will move in from the northwest toward the end of the week, bringing an end to the heavy rain potential. 7-day forecast: June 14, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!
