Sorry Dad, science says mom is the smart one

India Today5 hours ago

When little Aarav, barely four, started solving puzzles meant for eight-year-olds, his family was stunned, except his mother, who smiled knowingly. "He's always been curious, just like I was," she said, brushing off the praise. At first, everyone assumed it was just maternal pride talking. But as it turns out, science might actually agree with her.In living rooms, classrooms, and playgrounds across the world, children display sparks of brilliance that often lead people to wonder: Where did that come from? For years, the answer felt split down the middle. But now, genetic research is beginning to tip the scales pointing, quite strongly, toward mothers as the primary source of inherited intelligence. Studies suggest that when it comes to IQ, mom may have the upper hand in the genetic lottery.

advertisementINTELLIGENCE LIVES ON THE X CHROMOSOMEThe theory that intelligence is passed on more significantly from mothers is rooted in genetics. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, and one pair determines sex XX for females and XY for males. Research shows that many intelligence-related genes are located on the X chromosome.
Since women carry two X chromosomes, and men only one, the likelihood of a child inheriting these intelligence genes from the mother is statistically higher.BUT GENES AREN'T THE FULL STORYIt's important to note that genetics accounts for only 40-60% of intelligence. The rest comes down to environment, stimulation, education, and emotional support areas where both parents and caregivers play critical roles. "A child's potential is determined by genes, but how far they go depends on the environment they grow up in," says Dr. Meera Rao, a Delhi-based child psychologist. "Nutrition, emotional security, and access to learning are equally critical."NATURE MEETS NURTUREadvertisementInterestingly, mothers often end up playing a more central role not just genetically, but environmentally as well. Numerous psychological studies show that a secure emotional bondDOES BREASTFEEDING MAKE A CHILD INTELLIGENT?Breastfeeding may have a small positive effect on intelligence in children, but this effect largely disappears when you adjust for factors like the mother's IQ, education, and socio-economic status. Journalist Sarah Hall said to the Guardian "Breastfeeding your baby has little or no effect on its intelligence baby's brainpower 'more a matter of inheritance.MATERNAL IQ AS A STRONG PREDICTORA BMJ study (2006) of over 5,400 children found that maternal IQ was the strongest predictor of a child's IQ. Once maternal IQ was factored in, other variables like breastfeeding or socio-economic status had little impact on cognitive outcomes. Scientific evidence strongly supports that maternal genes, especially those on the X chromosome, have a disproportionately larger role in determining a child's intelligence but environment and parenting still matter greatly. While both parents matter, science says intelligence is mostly a mom thing. But don't worry, dads, you still get credit for the hairline.

Infosys-backed GalaxEye plans new satellite to meet global demand for geospatial data

Infosys-backed space tech startup GalaxEye said it will develop another imaging satellite given the growing demand for geospatial data globally for agriculture, mining, and defence. The new satellite will have a near 0.5 metre resolution for quality insights needed in critical sectors. The Bengaluru-based startup said its first satellite, Mission Drishti, scheduled for launch later this year from SpaceX, has a resolution of 1.25 metres. For both the satellites, GalaxEye will be using its proprietary technology by combining synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical multi-spectral imaging (MSI), aiming to provide all-weather information. The startup said the second satellite will not only deliver improved spatial resolution but also reduce revisit time to under three days, improving the responsiveness and utility of its constellation. 'The world's first SyncFusion SAR-Optical satellite, originally designed in India, will now also be fully built in-house, highlighting GalaxEye's growing manufacturing and systems integration capabilities,' the startup said in a statement, adding that it will also expand its current manufacturing capabilities. IIT-Madras alumnus and CEO of the startup, Suyash Singh, said the two satellites will give a big boost to data collection and the evolving needs of defence customers. 'Our sensor stack has already been tested on over 500 aerial test flights, backed by a proprietary signal processing toolchain, the success of the POEM payload, the Drishti (1.25 m) launch, and purpose-built software to extract actionable insights,' the CEO said. Singh added that the startup will also focus on vertical integration as the clients demand more persistent eyes in the sky, expecting detailed analytics data. Live Events 'GalaxEye's vision to bring reliability and Service Level Agreements to satellite imagery—all-time, all-weather imagery—is a game changer. We've believed in their mission from the start, and with the technology now de-risked, it's time to scale,' said Vishesh Rajaram, Managing Partner at Speciale Invest, an early investor in the startup. Israel-Iran War Day 7: Trump Mulls US Involvement; Putin, Xi Call For Ceasefire

Last Updated: As the war between Iran and Israel entered its seventh day on Thursday, both diplomatic and military pressures are mounting as the conflict intensifies As the war between Iran and Israel entered its seventh day on Thursday, there was no let-up in hostilities, with missiles continuing to fly and tensions escalating further. Both diplomatic and military pressures are mounting as the conflict intensifies. The direct confrontation began after Israel launched an unprecedented wave of airstrikes on Iran last week, prompting a swift response from Tehran in the form of missile and drone attacks. Since the fighting began, a Washington-based Iranian human rights group has reported that at least 639 people have been killed in Iran, including 263 civilians, with more than 1,300 injured. In retaliation, Iran has launched over 400 missiles and hundreds of drones, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 people in Israel and injuring hundreds more. Hospital Struck in Missile Barrage Earlier today, Iran launched a salvo of 'dozens" of missiles at southern Israel, with strikes reported in two towns near Tel Aviv. A direct hit on Soroka Hospital in Beersheba left several wards ablaze, injuring around 40 people, according to hospital director Shlomi Codish. Iran later claimed it was targeting a nearby military intelligence base, not the healthcare facility. The International Committee of the Red Cross condemned the strike and reminded all parties that hospitals must be protected under international law. Israel Threatens Khamenei In the aftermath, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Tehran would pay a 'heavy price" for the hospital hit. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a strong warning saying Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei 'shouldn't continue to exist". 'A dictator like Khamenei, who heads a country like Iran and has made the destruction of Israel his mission, cannot continue to exist," Katz stated. Putin-Xi Call For Ceasefire In a phone call on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping jointly condemned Israel's strikes and stressed a ceasefire, particularly from the Israeli side. Xi called for an urgent halt to hostilities and insisted that civilian protection must come first. Both leaders agreed to share intelligence information on the Iran-Israel situation. Trump Mulls US Military Involvement US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he was considering whether to join Israel's strikes. 'I may do it, I may not do it," he said, adding that Iran is 'in trouble" and open to negotiation. Conversely, Iran's Guardian Council threatened a 'harsh response" should the US intervene. Russia warned that American military action would be 'extremely dangerous". (With inputs from agencies) About the Author News Desk Location : Iran First Published:
