Supreme Court initiates suo motu contempt case against journalist Ajay Shukla
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday initiated a suo motu criminal contempt of court case against a Chandigarh-based journalist and YouTuber, Ajay Shukla, for his alleged and scandalous remarks against Justice Bela M Trivedi (now retired).
According to the Supreme Court's causelist, the case is listed for hearing on May 30, Friday, before a three-judge bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih and a third judge yet to be decided.
The case was titled as 'In Re: Scandalous Remarks Made By Mr Ajay Shukla, Editor-in-Chief, Varprad Media Pvt Ltd, a Digital Channel'.
Shukla, in his YouTube channel, recently posted a video on the retirement of apex court judge, Justice Trivedi.
In the video, the caption was described as Justice Trivedi (Former Judge) as 'Godi judge', a term describing someone as favouring Central government.

CM calls for measures to protect Kolleru lake
Vijayawada: Stressing on the need for environmental protection, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said the ecologically sensitive Kolleru lake must not be turned into a cesspool of pollution. The CM, who held a review meeting with local legislators and officials to discuss the steps needed to comply with Supreme Court guidelines as well as protecting the interests of those living within the lake's contours, asked officials to take immediate steps to ensure drain water from neighbouring fish ponds does not not enter the lake without proper treatment. "Unchecked release of drains must be stopped, and all encroachments on Upputeru, which carries water from Kolleru to the sea, must be removed along with desilting of the outlets," he told officials. Naidu said protecting the interests of farmers with about 20,000 acres of Jirayat and D-Patta lands in Kolleru area is the top priority for the state govt while resolving contour issues. He asked officials to send the govt's proposals to the central empowered committee (CEC) as directed by the Supreme Court. "The action plan must ensure justice not only to the environment and birds but also to local people. The Union govt sought the opinion of the state govt after the CEC raised objections, but the YSRCP govt neglected the issue, leaving about three lakh people residing in the area on tenterhooks, he alleged. After reviewing the preparations being made for a massive plantation drive to be taken up on June 5, Naidu set a target of planting one crore saplings across the state. He directed officials to take steps to geo-tag the plants to track the progress, and urged district collectors, ministers, and public representatives to actively participate in the programme by planting trees in educational institutions, hospitals, govt offices, bus stations, and along roadways, with proper tree guards.

Congress revokes suspension of Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary who opposed Charanjit Singh Channi in Lok Sabha polls
Jalandhar: Congress revoked the suspension of Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary on Monday — a move that appears to be a sign of growing bitterness between Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, former CM Charanjit Singh and others. Immediately after the revocation of his suspension, Vikramjit participated in a party function at Ludhiana's Dakha, presided over by Warring. The MLA was placed under suspension for opposing Charanjit Singh Channi during his parliamentary election from Jalandhar. In the past few days, Channi and a few other leaders had re-inducted two Ludhiana-based leaders into the party against Warring's wishes. On Monday, the latter appeared to be paying back in the same coin by getting a known Channi-baiter back into the party fold. Vikramjit's father, Santokh Singh Chaudhary, was the Jalandhar MP when he died during Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2023. A byelection followed and Vikramjit's mother, Karamjit Kaur, was given the party ticket, but she lost to Sushil Rinku, who was then in AAP. In 2024, Channi was given the Congress ticket, and Karamjit Kaur joined BJP, while Vikramjit continued opposing Channi. The Bains brothers had joined the Congress during Warring's Lok Sabha election campaign from Ludhiana and are considered to be his loyalists. Soon after Karwal's joining, Simarjit issued statements on Sunday evening, questioning his re-induction into the party and making it amply clear that Warring was not taken in the loop. This brought out the bitterness within Punjab Congress. Announcing the revocation of Vikramjit Singh's suspension on Monday morning, Warring wrote on his X account: "We in the @INCPunjab are glad that our colleague and the Phillaur MLA @VikramjitMLA is back with us. He is a dyed-in-wool third-generation Congressman. His homecoming will definitely strengthen the party." Vikramjit said Warring and leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa revoked his suspension. A different model appears to be at work during the factional fight of Punjab Congress leaders this time. Bengal govt identifies 140 OBC sub-groups
1 2 3 Kolkata: Bengal govt will table in the assembly's monsoon session an OBC survey that has identified 140 sub-groups under this category. The state govt is also likely to retain its 17% OBC reservation. The OBC policy was discussed at a state cabinet meeting on Monday. The two-week assembly session will begin on June 9. Bengal govt had told the Supreme Court on March 19 that it would complete the fresh OBC survey within three months, setting a June third-week deadline. The apex court had asked the state to clarify the social and educational backwardness of these sub-groups. According to sources, the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes engaged two independent bodies — Culture Research Institute and Bureau of Applied Economics and Statistics — to conduct the fresh survey to assess the socio-economic backwardness of the sub-groups. The commission officials sought applications for inclusions or deletions in the survey. For it, officials took into consideration an additional 76 sub-groups. Earlier, the OBC list had 66 sub-groups, but two of them did not match the required criteria. This total of 140 sub-groups are likely to be included in the OBC list. "The decision on the two groups will be taken later," an official said. The OBC legal gridlock for Bengal govt started with Calcutta High Court in May 2024 nullifying 12 lakh OBC certificates. The state had challenged this in SC. The HC struck down the OBC status of several castes and said: "Religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion for declaring these communities as OBCs. " During the SC hearing, the Bengal govt stood by its decision to include 77 castes in the OBC list, saying that the additions were made after conducting the required elaborate three-tier process, including two surveys and a hearing by the backward classes commission. Bengal provides 17% OBC reservation, divided into two buckets — OBC A, which has 10% and 81 communities, out of which 56 are Muslim, and OBC B, which has 7% and 99 communities, out of which 41 are Muslim. Officials said several lakh job applicants were affected as the OBC certificate was scrapped. The state govt wanted to grant new certificate on an urgent basis, so the survey was completed quickly.
