Giraldez joins Lyon Women after Champions League wins
FORMER Barcelona women's coach Jonatan Giraldez has been hired by French champions Lyon on a three-year deal, the club said on Monday.
The 33-year-old Spaniard took over from Joe Montemurro who was appointed head coach of the Australian national women's team earlier on Monday.
During his time at the helm of Barcela the club won the Champions League in 2023 and 2024 as well as three national league titles.
Lyon owner Michele Kang, who employed Giraldez at another of her clubs, Washington Spirit, said she hoped he would 'lift the team to new heights'.
Lyon sealed their fourth consecutive women's French league title last Friday but went out of the Champions League in the semi-finals when they were beaten by tournament winners Arsenal.
Lyon now face a rebuilding phase as several experienced players, including 36-year-old Eugenie Le Sommer, are leaving in the summer.

Kluivert confident Indonesia will edge China in World Cup qualifier
JAKARTA: Patrick Kluivert said he is "very confident" Indonesia will get a positive result against China in front of a sell-out crowd in Jakarta tomorrow to move closer to a historic World Cup spot. With two rounds of matches to go, Saudi Arabia are third on 10 points, one point ahead of Indonesia in fourth who have won two games and drawn three. Bahrain and China are both on six points. Teams finishing third and fourth will go into another round of qualifying – Indonesia's most likely route to their first World Cup since gaining independence as a country in 1945. Indonesia has embarked on a recruitment drive of Dutch-born players overseen by coaches from the country's former colonial ruler to bring better results. Around 76,000 are expected to attend tomorrow's match at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, with Kluivert hoping the raucous crowd can push his team to victory. "I hope that we can show them a good result," he said.

Michael's assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club," the club said in a statement. Carrick made more than 700 club appearances in his career and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League at United under Alex Ferguson. His first stint in management came during an interim spell at United following the sacking of Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021. Katoto came up through PSG's academy and became the club's leading goalscorer with 180 goals in 223 games, winning the Premiere Ligue in 2021 as well as three Coupe de France titles. The 26-year-old has made 53 appearances for France's national team, scoring 37 goals. She becomes the first signing under new coach Jonatan Giraldez, who was appointed on Monday to replace the Australia-bound Joe Montemurro. Lyonnes, formerly known as Olympique Lyonnais Feminin, are widely regarded as the most successful women's soccer club in the world and have won a record eight Women's Champions League titles. They were crowned Premiere Ligue champions for the 18th time in the 2024-25 season and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
