CM warns traders over declining tobacco prices

Time of India16-05-2025

Vijayawada: Taking a serious note of the lacklustre procurement of tobacco by traders, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to ensure that traders procure the entire tobacco stocks from
farmers
without any price reduction, while warning of stringent action against traders if farmers incur losses.
The CM, who held a review meeting with officials over issues in the procurement of tobacco, chilli, and cocoa on Friday, expressed dissatisfaction over the decline in
tobacco prices
. Making it clear that HD Burley tobacco must be bought at a minimum price of 12,500 per quintal, he said traders like ITC and GPI should take immediate steps to procure 20 million kg of tobacco. He further directed officials to monitor daily purchases through a control room and submit a report every two days.
Agriculture dept officials informed Naidu that there was an unexpected increase in tobacco yield this year, which, coupled with poor demand in the international market, caused the crisis. Tobacco varieties like FCV, White Burley, and HD Burley were cultivated in 1.9 lakh hectares during 2024-25, yielding 450 million kilograms. They said this is the highest crop yield, and the shift of farmers from other crops to tobacco also contributed to the increase in overall yield.
CM bats for
buyback policy
Noting that buyback policy is the best way to overcome the current problem, Naidu suggested that farmers should enter into buyback agreements with companies from now on.
"The tobacco board should monitor the implementation of the buyback policy and ensure purchases take place as agreed. Prices should be set according to global demand and supply to ensure profits for farmers," he said, adding that traders woo farmers to cultivate tobacco when the demand is high, but shy away when production increases, putting the farmers at a loss. "This cannot be allowed from now on, and traders must commit to a buyback agreement," he warned.
On reduction of
cocoa prices
, Naidu said Mondelez should purchase cocoa beans at 500 per kg. "No company should exploit farmers in cocoa bean purchases. Start coordinating with other companies to ensure purchases at 500 per kg," he said.

Andhra Pradesh govt., NITI Aayog, ISEG Foundation sign MoU on energy transition roadmap

The Andhra Pradesh Government, the NITI Aayog, and the ISEG Foundation entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the State Energy Transition Roadmap on Friday. The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. On the occasion, Mr. Naidu said that the undivided Andhra Pradesh had pioneered the power sector reforms in the country in 1998. In the year 2014, the residuary State had prioritised renewable energy, enabling lowest-cost power generation. With advances in technology, Andhra Pradesh made remarkable strides, he observed. 'The government is now implementing new policies that allows people to become both producers and consumers of power. If individuals generate electricity, distribution losses can be eliminated. EV adoption will drastically reduce transportation costs. We are focusing on solar, wind, pumped hydro, battery storage, and green hydrogen. Andhra Pradesh has abundant resources to support this vision. I seek NITI Aayog's support to realise it,' the Chief Minister said. As part of the MoU, the government intends to increase the share of renewables in power capacity addition. The current installed power generation capacity in the State is 27.3 GW. The electricity demand increased to 69.7 BU in 2025 from 55.6 BU in 2019. Industrial demand has grown by 4.8% and household demand by 5.1%. The power demand is projected to rise to 163.9 BU by 2035 from 88.6 BU next year. Under the AP Integrated Clean Energy Policy, the govenment targets 78.50 GW solar, 35 GW wind, 22 GW pumped storage, 1.50 MMTPA green hydrogen, 25 GW battery storage, 1,500 KLPD ethanol, 5,000 EV charging stations, and 10,000 TPD bio-CNG/CBG by 2029. The State has already attracted ₹5.78 lakh crore investments in clean energy, enabling 57.7 GW of power generation. Energy Minister Gottipati Ravikumar, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, Chief Secretary Vijayanand, and representatives of the ISEG Foundation were present.

He announced a dedicated cocoa policy to promote high-quality output and enhance farmer awareness. Support for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and MSMEs to strengthen agro-processing was also emphasised. Regarding tobacco, Naidu said the Tobacco Board will regulate Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) acreage, while White Burley tobacco will be cultivated under contract, with procurement handled by companies. 5 crore plant target set for next World Environment Day

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set a target of planting five crore saplings in the State by the next World Environment Day (WED). Naidu, along with Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan, attended Vana Mahotsav-2025 organised at Anantavaram village in the capital region to mark World Environment Day. Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said one crore saplings are being planted across the State to mark Environment Day. 'Environmental protection is everyone's responsibility. Every citizen should contribute to Swachh Andhra Mission. Is it fair to expect clean air without planting trees? Andhra Pradesh will set an example for the nation in environmental protection,' he asserted. After planing saplings in ADC Park, Naidu and Pawan Kalyan went round the stalls set up by the Pollution Control Board. 'It is a matter of great pride to launch the initiative of planting one crore saplings on a single day,' they said. CM takes a dig at previous govt over axing tress By the next World Environment Day, we aim to plant 5.58 crore saplings. Currently, Andhra Pradesh has 37,421 sq km of forest area, which is 23% of the total area. Including greenery outside forests, the State's green cover stands at 30.05%. Our goal is to increase this to 37% by 2029 and 50% by 2047. We should become a national role model in greenery. The previous government planted trees only for photo-ops,' Naidu said. Expressing his serious concern over the alarming level of global warming, Naidu said pollution is a serious threat which results in less rainfall, depletion of groundwater, and water contamination. 'During the previous regime, when the Chief Minister travelled by helicopter, trees along the roads were cut down for visibility. But, we are ensuring that trees are protected during our visits. Planting trees is our duty, cutting them down is a crime. In some countries, cutting trees without government permission is a crime, and can land them in jail,' Naidu reminded. Pawan lauded the efforts and commitment of Komera Ankarao, who has been striving to prevent deforestation in Nallamala, and promised that the Forest Department will plant another one crore saplings by next year.
