R1-million Isuzu MU-X will struggle to catch Fortuner and Everest

The Citizen11-05-2025

Isuzu's seven-seater SUV updated with attractive new looks and more technology.
The Isuzu D-Max holds a comfortable place at the local top bakkie table, but its SUV sibling, the MU-X, is akin to the adage of having a brother in prison. You love him, but do not speak about him.
Like the bakkie segment, the body on frame SUV space is also headed by Toyota. In an average month the Fortuner holds around half of the market share, with the Ford Everest a distant but steady second.
The third place is an almighty scrap between the Isuzu MU-X and Mahindra Scorpio-N, with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport also in the mix.
But even during months when the MU-X does edge the Scorpio-N, it doesn't come close to the kind of market share the D-Max has established in the bakkie race. Or in markets like Australia for example.
Slowly but surely
Isuzu is not under the illusion that the facelifted MU-X is going to perform miracles. But the Japanese manufacturer hopes it can at least build on the gradual single-digit percentage growth the SUV has achieved since the introduction of the second generation locally in 2021.
The facelifted version of the seven-seater SUV features styling enhancements and more technology on board. It keeps the 1.9 and 3.0-litre powertrains from before across six models, with the refined flagship model now adopting the Onyx XT moniker in becoming the first local Isuzu to break the R1-million barrier.
Seeing the facelift MU-X from the front approaching from a distance gives off serious previous generation Mercedes-Benz GLE vibes. The updated Isuzu MU-X features a redesigned front bumper which houses a model specific grille flanked by redesigned LED headlights.
The grille and redesigned fog lights bezels share the same honeycomb pattern, with the ISUZU lettering moving up from the grille to below the bonnet line.

Onyx XT looks the part
The German inspired styling continues at the rear were the full-width lightbar between the revised LED taillight cluster is reminiscent of the Audi Q8.
LS and LSE models ride on 18-inch alloy wheels, with the Onyx XT kitted out in gloss black 20-inch rims. The latter works a charm along with a blacked-out grille with the XT badge, magnetite accents, gloss black wheel arch cladding and black side steps, mirrors caps and roof rails.
Moving to the inside, the MU-X's dashboard has been revamped, while new colours feature on the doors and armrests. The seats also feature reworked leather patterns.

More tech inside Isuzu MU-X
Now standard across the range is a nine-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The touchscreen systems now feature five touch-sensitive switches alongside the two rotary dials as before.
The instrument cluster features a redesigned seven-inch multi-information display flanked by an analogue tachometer on the left and fuel and temperature gauges on the right.
Standard across the range is push-start, electric front seats and front and rear parking sensors. In addition, LSE models get 360-degree camera and paddle shifters, while the Onyx XT boasts adaptive cruise control and heated front seats.

No change in power
A decent set of safety systems is standard across the range, with the Isuzu MU-X Onyx XT benefitting from advanced systems like lane departure warning.
The 1.9-litre blown diesel mill produces 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque, sent to the rear wheels via six-speed automatic transmission.
The 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine produces 140kW/450Nm and is also mated to a six-speed auto box. All-wheel drive is standard on the Onyx XT, while the other 3.0-litre models offer a selection between rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Smooth drive
A recent launch drive around the Cape Winelands was enough for the 3.0-litre mill to prove to The Citizen Motoring that it has plenty of urge with little turbo lag. It offers a refined ride with smooth gear changes. Off the beaten track, the MU-X is as capable as you'd come to expect from an Isuzu off-roader.
The updated Isuzu MU-X looks and feels better than its ever been. But the reality is that it is still playing catch-up to the Ford Everest and dated Toyota Fortuner. It's hard to imagine a price tag that breaches seven digits for the flagship will be justified for many more than the Isuzu faithful.

Denny Hamlin pulls out third win of year at Michigan

Denny Hamlin is on baby watch, but he had one more work day to take care of Sunday. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver made his way past William Byron with four laps to go and had enough gas to hang on and win the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. Racing a snappy purple No 11 Toyota, Hamlin passed Byron's No 24 Chevrolet with four circuits left on the 3.21km track, and Byron ran out of fuel coming to the white flag. The Hendrick Motorsports driver landed in 28th place. In delivering Toyota its second straight MIS win, Hamlin beat Ford's Chris Buescher by 1.09 seconds for his third Cup Series win this season and third at the Michigan track. His last victory there came in June 2011. "I wanted to get the lead, (Byron) was doing a great job defending," Hamlin said before taunting the crowd's mixture of cheers and boos. "Daddy, I'm sorry, but I beat your favourite driver, folks." When asked who the driver was, Hamlin, who led only five laps, said: "All of them." Hamlin and fiancée Jordan Fish are expecting their third child. Hamlin said he was prepared to leave the race if she went into labour during the first 50 laps. Hamlin won for the 57th time in his 701st career race, becoming only the 10th driver to win after making 700 starts. "We've been so fast the entire year but haven't been finishing for one reason or another," said Hamlin, 44. "It feels good to come here to Michigan, where we've been so close over the years, and get a victory. Such a gratifying day to restart 11th, 12th, something like that, and then drive to the front." Ty Gibbs and Bubba Wallace were third and fourth, respectively. Gibbs is Hamlin's JGR teammate and Wallace drives for 23XI Racing, which Hamlin co-owns. Kyle Larson finished fifth. Byron grabbed the lead away from polesitter Chase Briscoe on lap 12 of Stage 1, but Buescher passed Byron on lap 36 of the 45-lap segment and earned his first stage win of 2025. Byron finished second while Hamlin, Briscoe and Josh Berry completed the top five in the incident-free stage. The first caution for cause waved on lap 60 when Noah Gragson and John Hunter Nemechek, running inside the top 20, spun on the back stretch to bunch up the field again, but seven laps later a hard wreck occurred in turn 2. Riding in the bottom lane, last week's winner Ryan Blaney tapped Cole Custer's No41, triggering a mess that ended up with Alex Bowman's No 48 Chevrolet crashing violently nose-first into the wall and Briscoe spinning after being clipped by Custer's Ford. That prompted a red-flag condition for cleanup. "Yeah, that hurt a lot," Bowman said. "It was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and, unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits." As Stage 2 neared its end, Blaney slapped the wall on his own in the No 12 Ford and spun down the speedway, an unfortunate fifth caution for Christopher Bell, who pitted shortly before Blaney's mishap. The closing laps of the stage featured a spirited battle between Byron, Tyler Reddick, Austin Cindric and Carson Hocevar. Byron made the winning pass on the final lap for the stage win while Cindric was able to hold off Michigan native Hocevar for second. Hocevar took the point on lap 152, but the Spire Motorsports driver suffered a flat left rear tyre with 19 circuits left, turning over the lead to Byron. Hocevar finished 29th.

Ogier edges Tanak to win in Sardinia, Evans stays top

Sebastien Ogier clinched a record fifth Rally Italy victory on Sunday, fending off Hyundai's Ott Tanak by 7.9 seconds after a tense final stage in Sardinia, while Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans stayed top of the championship standings. Ogier, with co-driver Vincent Landais, completed the sixth round of the season in three hours 34 minutes and 24.5 seconds to secure the Frenchman's third win in four starts in a part-time campaign. The eight-times world champion was beaten by Tanak on the island last year by 0.2 seconds after a final-stage puncture, but this time Ogier stayed composed and took the win despite a late wobble. Ogier had built a 17.1-second cushion heading into the Wolf Power Stage, but the 41-year-old overshot a tight, rutted corner in the final kilometres. This forced him to stop and reverse after his car refused to turn, cutting his advantage by more than half in a tense finale. "In the ruts I couldn't turn the car," Ogier explained. "There was no speed at all, so I didn't try to force it and hit it. I preferred to stop and reverse. But yeah, not ideal. It was enough to win." The victory follows hot on the heels of his Rally Portugal triumph and sent Ogier ro second in the championship with 114 points to Evans' 133. Toyota, who have won every rally so far this year, also tightened their grip on the manufacturers' race with 312 points to Hyundai's 243. "There are many places I've won several times," said Ogier. "It's a type of rally I like, where precise driving is needed, but also smoothness for tyre management. Thanks to the team, great turnaround after Portugal in terms of speed and set-up, so good job." Tanak pushed hard in the final stage but fell short, while Kalle Rovanpera, clawing his way up from fifth during Saturday's stages, completed a double podium for Toyota in third, 50.5 seconds behind Ogier. The Finn dropped to third overall, one point behind Ogier, with Tanak fourth on 108. Evans and Takamoto Katsuta rounded out a strong showing for Toyota, taking fourth and fifth respectively. Hyundai's reigning champion Thierry Neuville, fifth in the championship on 83 points, took four points from the Power Stage and one from the "Super Sunday" format after returning after Friday's retirement. The next round is in Greece from June 26 to 29.

Ogier edges Tanak to claim fifth Sardinia crown as Toyota charge into title fight

Sebastien Ogier clinched a record fifth Rally Italia Sardegna victory on Sunday, fending off Hyundai's Ott Tanak by just 7.9 seconds after a tense final stage in Sardinia. The French Toyota driver, alongside co-driver Vincent Landais, completed the 16-stage event in 3 hours, 34 minutes and 24.5 seconds to secure the team's third win of the 2025 season. Toyota's eight-times world champion Ogier was beaten by Tanak last year, who seized victory by a whisker. Hyundai's Tanak pushed hard in the final Wolf Power Stage but fell short, while Kalle Rovanpera completed a double podium for Toyota in third, 50.5 seconds behind Ogier. Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta rounded out a strong showing for Toyota, taking fourth and fifth respectively.
