Villagers apologise after viral clash with police
PEKAN: An altercation between a group of Orang Asli villagers from Kampung Arong and the police, which went viral on social media, stemmed from a misunderstanding related to land matters.
Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the villagers had expressed anger towards officers from the Paloh Hinai police station, who had gone to the settlement on Saturday to defuse the tense situation.
"Investigations revealed that land surveyors had visited the site, located next to a factory, on May 23 (Friday) to conduct survey works.
Some Orang Asli villagers obstructed them from carrying out their duties, prompting the surveyors to lodge a police report.
"Around 10am on May 24, the Paloh Hinai police station chief and several officers went to Kampung Arong to explain the presence of the surveyors.
"However, the situation escalated.
"Police advised the villagers to adhere to the law and allow the survey work to proceed, but some reacted provocatively and used abusive language.
"To prevent the situation from worsening, the police team decided to leave the settlement and return to the station," he said when contacted today.
Zaidi said that the next day, a group of villagers from Kampung Arong turned up at the Paloh Hinai police station around 4pm to apologise for their actions.
"Police have decided not to pursue further action, as the villagers have expressed remorse.
"Yesterday, the Orang Asli villagers also attended a meeting at the factory site in Paloh Hinai, which included representatives from the police and the Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa).
"The meeting was arranged to ensure that all parties, including the Orang Asli, understood the situation clearly to prevent similar issues in future," he said.
A five-minute and 17-second video capturing the verbal confrontation between the villagers and police went viral on social media yesterday.
Meanwhile, Pahang Jakoa director Adam Zaidi Mahidin said the incident was due to a misunderstanding that has since been resolved.
"The Orang Asli community had not been properly informed about the actual leasehold land area granted by the Pahang State Secretary Corporation to a private company for development purposes.
"The land in question was previously the site of the Kampung Arong Orang Asli settlement before the villagers were relocated. However, crops belonging to the community and an old cemetery still remain at the original site," he told the Pahang Media news portal.

Life goes on for Syahira two years after husband's death in tiger attack
GUA MUSANG: Nearly two years after her husband was killed by a tiger at Pos Pasik, an Orang Asli woman has managed to get on with her life with her two daughters, thanks to the assistance from the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). Twenty-two-year-old Syahira Hamid of Kampung Sugi, Pos Pasik, said that the tragic incident occurred when her husband, Pisie Amud, 25, went out to hunt for food in the jungle. "Life has to go on. " I have now come to terms with fate and am striving to raise our two daughters - Nur Haura, 2, and Finka, 4 - as best as possible. "I'm not working, but we can continue with our lives as a result of the roughly RM900 monthly aid from Perkeso, thanks to the contributions of my late husband's job as a Community Ranger with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan)," she told reporters at Pos Pasik here. However, Syahira, from the Temiar tribe, admitted that she hasn't been able to visit his grave as she is still emotionally distressed. Pisie's grandfather, 59-year-old Aznan Siam described Syahira as a strong and patient woman for single-handedly raising her two young children. However, even he has yet to get over the tragic incident that befell his grandson, particularly since he was among the volunteers who found his remains. "To this day, I can still picture the tiger's claw marks on Pisie's head and body. He also lost his left foot as a result of the attack. "We found his motorcycle and his blowpipe equipment. "There were also tiger footprints at the scene. Since then, the villagers daren't enter the jungle alone," he said. On Oct 3, 2023, Pisie Amud was reported to have been mauled to death by a tiger while out hunting on his own in the oil palm plantation near his village.

Cops deny viral claims of hypnosis in Pekan robberies
PEKAN: Police have denied allegations circulating on a Facebook page claiming that an armed robbery gang has been hypnotising (pukau) victims before committing robberies here. Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin, said the claims were baseless and unsupported by any evidence. "Yesterday (May 27), Pekan police came across a viral post on the 'Kami Asal Pekan Pahang' Facebook page. The post alleged that suspects armed with parang were breaking into homes and hypnotising the owner. "It also claimed that such incidents were widespread in Pekan. However, police investigations found no reports lodged regarding such incidents," he said in a statement today. Zaidi urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information without consulting the authorities. He said members of the public can contact the authorities directly for accurate information, either by calling the Pekan police operations room at 09-4221222 or going to the nearest police station.
