2 Chinese vessels shadow Atin Ito ship on civilian mission to Pagasa Island
Atin Ito Coalition said two China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels shadowed its ship while on the way to Pagasa Island for a civilian mission on Tuesday morning.
In an update, Atin Ito said CCG 3306 and CCG 21549 shadowed the Philippine civilian mission ship around 54 nautical miles from El Nido, Palawan.
'CCG 3306 is 3 NM from Atin Ito ship while the other one, CCG 21549, is 5 NM away from the Atin Ito ship,' the coalition said.
Chinese and Philippine sides exchanged radio challenges, according to Atin Ito.
Volunteers from Atin Ito arrived in El Nido on Monday to launch the third civilian-led mission to the West Philippine Sea (WPS), which will culminate with a concert near Pagasa Island. The civilian mission was set from May 26 to 30,
More than 150 people are on board Atin Ito's M/V Kapitan Felix Oca including volunteers, artists and their crew, the press, as well as boat staff.
'We aim to uplift coastal communities by amplifying the lived experiences and aspirations of our fisherfolk, and to foster regional harmony through shared cultural and maritime narratives. We will sail not with warships, but with songs; not with hostility, but with harmony and solidarity,' Atin Ito convenor Rafaela David earlier said.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Monday said it has deployed two of its vessels, Melchora Aquino and BRP Malapascua, to escort the civilian-led mission.
Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim.
The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago including Luzon Sea and the waters around, within and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc.
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis."

PCG challenges China Coast Guard vessel off Zambales
The Philippine Coast Guard over the weekend challenged a China Coast Guard vessel located nearly 76 nautical miles from Palauig Point off the coast of Zambales, which is within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In a post on his X account on Sunday evening, PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela said the agency directed the Multi Role Response Vessel (MRRV-4409) BRP Cabra on Saturday evening to challenge the presence of the CCG vessel, in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). 'Despite facing challenging sea conditions with wave heights ranging from 8 to 10 feet, the 44-meter vessel continuously engaged the China Coast Guard 3105, emphasizing its lack of legal authority to patrol within Philippine waters but did not receive any response,' the post read. To recall, the Philippines in 2013 challenged China over its claims on the West Philippine Sea, and in 2016 Manila scored a victory in a landmark ruling by an international tribunal that invalidated Beijing's claims. China has refused to acknowledge the Permanent Court of Arbitration's 2016 ruling that invalidated its nine-dash line. Its government in 2022 claimed that it will continue to adhere to what it described as a 'friendly consultation' with the Philippines after several Chinese vessels have been found 'swarming' areas in the West Philippine Sea. The Philippines has already filed over 150 diplomatic protests against China regarding the territorial dispute under the administration of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. Fishing boat in distress Tarriela said the BRP Cabra also received a distress call from Filipino fishing boat FFB John John, which reported engine troubles about 40.35 nautical miles southeast of Bajo De Masinloc. 'Swiftly responding to the situation, the crew of BRP Cabra successfully arrived at the location of the fishing boat and is now towing it safely back to Subic Port, Zambales,' he said. Gibo Teodoro calls for enhanced cross-regional security cooperation
Speaking before defense and security leaders in Singapore, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said countries should improve cross-regional security cooperation through joint strategic dialogues such as trilateral or quadrilateral summits of regional blocs on shared security concerns. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro on Sunday called for the enhancement of cross-regional security cooperation among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other countries, amid the ongoing rift between China and the United States and vulnerabilities of the global infrastructure. Speaking before defense and security leaders at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Teodoro said countries should improve cross-regional security cooperation through joint strategic dialogues such as trilateral or quadrilateral summits of regional blocs on shared security concerns. 'To this end, we must strengthen ASEAN and leverage its dialogue partnerships, including those with the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council,' he said. 'Another potential area of convergence is the development of shared legal frameworks and cooperative enforcement,' the defense official added. Teodoro also called for the broader participation of member states of the United Nations in the Security Council, citing the need to curtail the use of the veto as this 'may serve as a hindrance' to the interests of smaller states. 'For all its shortcomings, there is no preferable alternative to the rules-based order, especially for the security, prosperity, and survival of smaller states like the Philippines,' he added. Teodoro's remarks come amid the competition between the United States and China that has increasingly defined the regional security environment, and what the Department of Defense said endangers the portrayal of legitimate actions taken by smaller states as being made at the behest of major powers. 'As if we are mere pawns with no strategic agency of our,' he said, 'In that spirit, I would like to reiterate that our position on the West Philippine Sea is not a function of Sino-American strategic rivalry. Teodoro, Brawner slam misleading report by Chinese ‘journalists'
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. on Saturday slammed a malicious and misleading report from what they are Chinese intelligence agents posing as journalists at a defense conference in Singapore. In a video shared by the Armed Forces of the Philippines on social media, Teodoro said the people claiming to be 'journalists' asked him if the Philippines is a proxy of the United States at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. 'Nung ako tinanong, nakipagsagutan ako ng matagal dahil tinanong nila sa akin kung tayo daw ay proxy lang daw ng America sabi ko 'hindi, hindi tayo proxy.' Natural Pilipino tayo, pero sila magnanakaw ng teritoryo e 'di nagsagutan na kami ng nag sagutan. Hindi pa nilalabas yun pero baliktarin na naman nila,' Teodoro said. (When I was asked if the Philippines is a proxy of the US, I answered 'no' because we are Filipinos. I had an argument with them. They're the ones stealing our territory. They have yet to release a story about it and they will again twist the narrative.) Teodoro and Brawner were attending the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, an event the defense secretary noted the absence of official delegates from Beijing. 'Imbis na magpadala sila ng defense minister, nagpapadala sila ng mga bata na nagpapanggap na journalist na ahente ng intelligence nila na nagtatanong ng balagbag tapos binabaliktad ang video,' Teodoro said. (Instead of sending a defense minister, they sent kids pretending to be journalists but are actually intelligence agents who ask malicious questions then manipulate the video.) I thought they were real so I argued with them because I'm a Filipino and they were maligning the Philippines, so naturally I responded.) Brawner narrated that he did not answer any queries of supposed journalists as he was proceeding to a bilateral meeting. 'Later on, naglabas sila sa WeChat, binaliktad nila ang story na umiiwas daw tayo sa mga tanong nila about West Philippine Sea at yung ang paratang nila na tayo ang iinfiltrate o tayo ang encroach, pumapasok, dun sa teritoryo nila,' Brawner said. (They released an article on WeChat, saying that the Philippines is avoiding answering questions about the West Philippine Sea and accused us of infiltrating, encroaching, and entering their territory.) Teodoro added he later saw the so-called 'journalists' again and even waved at them with a greeting, 'Kanina nakita ko itong mga bata na ito, kinawayan ko. 'Hello mga agent ng MSS (Ministry of State Security)!', hindi na lumapit. 'Yung mga iyan hindi naman tunay na journalist.' (A while ago I saw them again and waved, 'Hello MSS agents!'.
