Murshidabad violence: A report names its leaders, leaves TMC with a fresh problem

Indian Express24-05-2025

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal had already been battling accusations of mismanaging the situation in Murshidabad last month when communal violence rocked the border district. Now, providing ammunition to the Opposition, a Calcutta High Court-appointed committee has blamed the local TMC leadership, naming an MLA and a councillor, and alleging that the police were completely inactive.
With the Assembly elections less than a year away, the simmering situation in Murshidabad and the outing of the part of the report have allowed the BJP to step up its attack on the TMC and paint it as a party that engages in appeasement politics towards minorities. While earlier it was easier for the TMC to brush off any allegations, given that no specific allegations were raised against its leaders, the report changes that.
The leak marks the third setback for the party in the last couple of months. First, the Supreme Court on April 3 upheld the Calcutta High Court's verdict annulling the appointment of 25,753 teachers and ordering the government to initiate a fresh selection process. On May 16, the Supreme Court directed the government to release 25% of the outstanding Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears to its employees within six weeks.
The probe report on the Murshidabad violence states that the attacks were 'directed by the local councillor Mehboob Alam …. the local police was completely inactive and absent'. This refers to the anti-Waqf Amendment Act protests that erupted on April 11. According to the committee, the main attack occurred after 2.30 pm when 'Mehboob Alam came with miscreants', among them residents of Samserganj, Hizaltala, Shiulitala, and Digri who were masked.
The report alleges that Samserganj MLA Amirul Islam 'came, saw which houses were not attacked, and then the attackers set them ablaze … The villagers of Betbona telephoned, but the West Bengal Police did not respond … The MLA was also present. He saw the vandalism and went away'.
Alam, who is the former chairperson of Dhulian municipality, dismissed the allegations. 'I respect the court, but the allegations against me are completely false. The day the incident happened, I was at Kadamtala with four people from the Hindu community. When I saw miscreants running with weapons, I tried to stop them. They chased us and we went to Nadabpara. The Hindu families and I took shelter there and then called the officer in charge of Samserganj police station who did not receive calls at first. Once he picked up my call, he said he would look into it. But he did not do anything. I have helped develop my ward. Is it possible that I will set fire to the ward I helped develop? This is a BJP-RSS conspiracy,' said the TMC leader.
Amirul Islam also dismissed the allegations contained in the report. 'I was out there trying to stop the miscreants. I was one of the few party leaders who did it. It was my duty. Later, I toured the area and provided relief to people. This is a conspiracy.'
A local Trinamool leader said both Amirul and Alam had prospered under TMC rule. The MLA started as a local teacher but now runs a business, while Alam has ties with the local beedi industry.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the report establishes that Hindus were targeted in the violence and that TMC leaders were involved. 'The attitude of the police, instead of stopping the violence, seems to be ignoring the actions of TMC leaders,' he said.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed the allegations outright as the BJP's 'political propaganda'. 'What happened in Murshidabad is condemnable, nobody supports it,' Ghosh said, adding that following the violence, the state administration had fulfilled its duties, be it rehabilitation of the victims or making arrests in the matter.
'Another aspect involves the larger conspiracy,' Ghosh said. 'How did outsiders, possibly including those from across the border, enter (the state)? The TMC has been a responsible Opposition. At a time when the country is united in its fight against terror, BJP leaders are busy with propaganda on Murshidabad. This is a part of their conspiracy.'

Congress MP sends 'reminder' to Rajya Sabha chair on pending impeachment motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav

Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha has written to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, chairman of the Upper House, to remind him about a pending motion, signed by 55 MPs, seeking the removal of Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court on the grounds 'of alleged misbehaviour unbecoming of a judge'. 'Queries were raised regarding the authenticity of some signatures, including that of my signature. I have clarified, and supposedly other MPs must have clarified to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat that the signatures are genuine and correct. MPs signed in the presence of each other on three sets of the representation in the House itself…' Mr. Tankha said in his letter, dated June 12. He said that senior Opposition MPs had been present, including P. Chidambaram and Digvijaya Singh of the Congress, Independent Kapil Sibal, John Brittas of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Manoj Jha, and P. Wilson of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In all, 55 Opposition MPs had moved an impeachment motion against Justice Yadav on December 13, 2024, for allegedly making 'communal' remarks within the court's premises. 'We request that due consideration be given to the pendency of this motion, as it reflects the collective concern of Members of this august House,' Mr. Tankha said. Parliamentary inquiry needed The Congress MP also voiced his opposition to the Union government's plan to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, who was indicted by a three-member committee set up by the former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. In March, a large quantity of half-burnt currency notes were recovered during a fire at Justice Varma's official residence while he was serving as a Delhi High Court judge. The Supreme Court then moved him to the Allahabad High Court and took away all his judicial work after an in-house inquiry indicted Justice Varma. Now, the government has reached out to political parties to move a motion to remove Justice Varma on the basis of the Supreme Court's in-house inquiry report. 'The in-house Committee report is only meant for the Chief Justice of India and other judges of the Supreme Court, and cannot constitute the basis for removal,' Mr. Tankha said, arguing that Parliament must conduct a fresh inquiry under the Judges Inquiry Act.

Four Maoists, including three women, killed in ongoing encounter in M.P's Balaghat

At least four Maoists, three of them women, have been killed in an ongoing encounter between security forces and Maoists in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district on Saturday (June 14, 2025), the police said. Madhya Pradesh's anti-Maoists Hawk Force Commandant Shiyaz K.M. told The Hindu that the encounter was under way in the Pachamdadar and Katejhiriya areas of the Sonewani forest area. Mr. Shiyaz said a search operation was launched in multiple parts of the district's dense forest areas based on inputs from the Maoist movement. 'Combing efforts are going on in multiple areas and the encounter will continue at least till tomorrow (June 15, 2025),' he said, adding that heavy rains in the area had made the operation more challenging. Mr. Shiyaz said the operatives belonged to the Malajkhand unit of the GRB (Gondia-Rajnandgaon-Balaghat) Division of the Maoists. 'We had received input of their movement a couple of days ago after which multiple parties were deployed for a search operation. During one such search, firing started from their side and our personnel responded,' the officer said. The encounter is part of a joint operation by the Madhya Pradesh Police's Hawk Force and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), he said. Special Director-General (Anti-Maoist Operations) Pankaj Shrivastav told The Hindu that the four cadres were killed in two separate encounters and that a self-loading rifle (SLR), two .315 rifles, a grenade launcher and other ammunition were recovered from them. 'We cannot divulge much information, as it is an ongoing operation. The forces and officers are currently in the forest. It has also been raining heavily there today (June 14, 2025), which is adding to the challenge but we are continuing the search operation. The encounter is likely to continue till tomorrow,' he said. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the security forces and dubbed the encounter as a major success for the campaign to end Maoism by March 2026, a deadline set by the Union Government. 'Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and Union Home Minister Amit Shah ji, the State has achieved a major success in the campaign to eradicate Maoism by March 2026,' he said on X. — Dr Mohan Yadav (@DrMohanYadav51) June 14, 2025 'The search is still on, in which a large number of police officers and personnel are engaged. Hearty congratulations to our indomitable soldiers and senior police officers of the State for this success,' Mr. Yadav said.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind serves legal notice on M.V. Govindan over remark on Pahalgam attack

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Kerala chapter has served a legal notice on M.V. Govindan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), for one of his statements against the organisation. Shihab Pookottur, State secretary, JIH, quoted Mr. Govindan as saying on June 14 that JIH was a prominent organisation that had not taken a stand against the Pahalgam attack. Citing a statement by Syed Sadatullah Husaini, national president, JIH, condemning the attack, Mr. Pookottur said that Mr. Govindan was trying to create political mileage in the Nilambur by-election by inducing Islamophobia through a fake campaign. The attempt was to paint a Muslim organisation as anti-national and dangerous and create communal polarisation and discord among Hindu and Christian communities, Mr. Pookottur said. Demanding a compensation of ₹1 crore, he said that Mr. Govindan need to correct his statement and issue a public apology.
