Gun and drug bust in and around the GTA leads to 10 arrests
Ten people were arrested and two others are sought after a cache of guns and drugs were seized during searches of more than a dozen residences in and around the GTA.
Durham Regional Police say the Drug Enforcement Unit launched an investigation dubbed Project Venture in November 2024 – an operation that involved assistance from Toronto Police, Ontario Provincial Police, York Regional Police, Peterborough Police, Peel Regional Police, Waterloo Regional Police and Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario.
Project Venture culminated in the execution of 16 search warrants in Durham, Toronto and Waterloo on May 2, police said in a statement released Thursday.
'Investigators seized several items, including 12 firearms, more than three kilograms of cocaine, a large quantity of other narcotics and more than $100,000 in cash,' police alleged, adding the drugs have a street value of more than 300,000.
'A 2024 Volkswagen Atlas was also seized as property related to the offence,' police said. 'Several individuals at these residences were also arrested and charged.'

Police said a total of 112 criminal charges have been laid so far against the 10 accused.
Charged with an assortment of related offences are Devonte Black-Marriott, 27, of Pickering, Muhammad Lila, 25, of Scarborough, Isaac Hinton, 26, of Toronto, Kyle Hinton, 32, of Toronto, Jermaine Russell, 40, of Toronto, Dalton Gilmore, 30, of Pickering, Jason Campbell, 42, of Waterloo, Uzair Malek, 31, of Toronto, Scott Young, 58, of Toronto, and Percy Noray, 56, of Toronto.
Investigators have been in contact with one of the two men still sought – Andra Rennie, 44, of Brampton, who is wanted on three counts of storing a firearm or restricted weapon contrary to regulations.
But cops are appealing to the public for help tracking down the second suspect.
Dexter Taylor-Bailey, 33, of Mississauga, is wanted for possession of a restricted firearm knowingly not holding a licence, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, two counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime over $5000, two counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of a schedule IV substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Man accused of road rage incident that led to helicopter chase ‘just wanted to scare' driver
A road rage shooting Friday evening escalated to gunfire and a dramatic helicopter chase that ended with an arrest at the suspect's home in Gwinnett County. The incident began near Buford Drive and South Lee Street near Buford, according to police reports, when two drivers got into a confrontation that quickly turned violent. 'One of the drivers honked at the other driver. Some gestures were given. Verbal threats might have been spoken, and one of the drivers produced a handgun and shot at the other,' said Cpl. The victim called 911 to report being shot at by another driver at around 4:45 p.m. Officers responded to the area near Interstate 985 and Buford Drive. They were quickly dispatched to that call and were able to find the suspect vehicle and not only guide officers to it, but assist in the apprehension of the suspect,' Madiedo said. Video from the helicopter shows the suspect's blue Volkswagen Atlas being followed through a residential neighborhood before the chase ended at Arthur Brodeur's home on Newbridge Circle. Police arrested Brodeur, 62, and found a loaded handgun. They said they also found spent shell casings in his vehicle. The victim told police that he thought the suspect hit his vehicle during the incident, and he tried to get him to pull over. Brodeur told officers that the other driver was getting too close and he 'just wanted to scare him to get [the victim] to leave him alone,' according to the police report. Madiedo warned drivers about the dangers of road rage escalation. 'We know people are armed out here, and that's fine, but please avoid confrontation, if at all possible, and always call 911 if you feel threatened,' he said. Brodeur faces a felony aggravated assault charge and remains in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

Toronto cops credit genetic genealogy for cracking nearly 30-year-old cold case
Police are crediting the use of investigative genetic genealogy in helping to identify a man whose lifeless body was found nearly 30 years ago. Toronto Police provided an update on the cold case Wednesday, saying that on Aug. 23, 1996, the body of a man was found in a downtown field near Lake Shore Blvd. and Spadina Ave. He did not have any identification or possessions with him and had been there for some time, police said. Attempts were made to identify the man by sifting through missing person cases, but police said no match was found. 'In recent years, his DNA was compared to the DNA of relatives in the National DNA Databank, but he remained unidentified,' Toronto Police said in a news release. In May 2024, with the approval of the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, Toronto Police began using investigative genetic genealogy for the case. 'The investigation found distant relatives who traced their heritage to Quebec,' police said. 'In November 2024, the investigation focused on a man from Quebec.' In March, police said the DNA comparison between the deceased and suspected relatives confirmed his identity and Montreal Police notified his family. The man's identity is not being released and police said no foul play is suspected. Toronto Police also credited the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario, Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, Othram Labs, Centre of Forensic Sciences, National Centre for Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains, National DNA Databank, Montreal Police, Ottawa Police and the Quebec laboratoire de medicine for their help. Family issues statement following shocking killing of elderly Pickering woman
The family of an 83-year-old woman killed during a shocking stabbing attack last week in Pickering is expressing their 'gratitude' for the community's 'outpouring of love and support.' In a statement released by Durham Regional Police on Tuesday, the family of Eleanor Doney also thanked first responders. 'We want to express our gratitude to the community for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time,' the family said. 'We especially want to thank the first responders for all of their efforts. We take comfort in the fact that she was a woman of strong Christian faith.' Last Thursday, police said a passerby found Doney on the ground outside a residence midafternoon near Lynn Heights Dr. and Fairport Rd., in the Whites Rd. and Finch Ave. area, suffering from traumatic injuries. She was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre where she was pronounced dead. Following an extensive search, police said a 14-year-old boy from Pickering was arrested hours later. On Friday, the teen was charged with first-degree murder. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. It is Durham Region's second homicide of 2025. Police say they are also reminding the public to not share any identifying information or photos about the alleged young offender as it is a criminal offence. 'We are asking you to instead turn those videos over to police and use the social media space as a place to remember Eleanor,' police said.
