Walsh the Galway hero as they edge Armagh in a thriller

BBC Newsa day ago

Shane Walsh was the Galway hero as his ninth point of the game with the final kick saw his side edge Armagh by 2-22 to 0-27 in a thriller at Kingspan Breffni Park.Heading into the game, Armagh knew they were straight through to the quarter-finals as winners of Group Four, but Galway's continued interest in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was far from secure. Those prospects looked bleak at the end of the first half when they trailed by eight, having been outplayed with two penalties in the process. But they roared back into it after the break with goals from John Maher and Rob Finnerty injecting life as they grabbed the win which ultimately saw them claim third place in the group, which means they hit the road next week for a preliminary quarter-final.Although Armagh came into this repeat of last year's All-Ireland final with the pressure off, they were full of intent early with Ethan Rafferty slinging over the first of his team's four two-pointers in the opening period.Rian O'Neill and Peter McGrane followed with points before Galway were offered a great chance to get into the game when awarded a ninth-minute penalty as Rob Finnerty went down under a Paddy Burns challenge, but Rafferty was equal to Matthew Tierney's effort and John Maher screwed the rebound wide.Shane Walsh did get them on their way with a pair of scores, but Armagh were flying with the next five points including a two-pointer from Niall Grimley.Peter Cooke slung over a two-pointer for Galway, but Darragh McMullan hit back in kind with a scorching effort with the outside of his boot. The gap was eight when Galway got a second penalty on 30 minutes with Walsh going down under a challenge from Burns and this time, Finnerty stepped up but thumped over.Eight was the gap at the break as Rafferty got his second two of the half, this time a free, as Armagh went in with a 0-15 to 0-7 lead that in no way flattered them.
Galway produce storming second period
Galway had much work to do at the break and whatever was said most certainly worked as they were a different team, hitting early points from Peter Cooke and Cillian McDaid before their first goal on 39 minutes came as Dylan McHugh squared for Maher to palm home.Their leaders stepped up with Walsh, Finnerty and substitute Paul Conroy all leading the charge with Armagh just about keeping their noses in front with Jason Duffy and Ross McQuillan pointing.A two-point free from Walsh levelled it before his side moved two clear as Armagh suddenly needed to dig deep and did so with the next five points on the spin as Tiernan Kelly and Jarlath Og Burns got their names on the board. After Cathal Sweeney hit back, Galway grabbed their second goal and they turned over the Armagh kick-out with Finnerty showing great composure to finish as we were set up for a frantic final 10 minutes. It was nip-and-tuck down the stretch with Galway edging two ahead, only for Rafferty to kick his third two of the game to bring his tally to nine and although Walsh restored the Galway lead, Shane McPartlan became Armagh's 14th scorer of the evening to level once more. With one minute to go, possession was vital and Galway got it, draining the clock and then winning a free after the hooter which Walsh thumped over to seal victory and keep Galway in the race for Sam Maguire.

Ireland defeat Belgium in Antwerp to secure first win in Pro League campaign

The Green Machine lost 5-1 to the side ranked second in the world on Saturday, only to gain revenge 24 hours later with a shock 3-2 victory. Things may have been very different if it wasn't for Jaime Carr incredible save from a first half penalty stroke, denying Alexander Hendrikx. Ireland broke the deadlock at the start of the second half when Fergus Gibson set up Louis Rowe who smashed past Simon Vandenbroucke. Lee Cole scored from a penalty corner in the third quarter to double Ireland's advantage. Nicolas De Kerpel pulled a goal back for the Belgians at the start of the fourth quarter, before Cole restored Ireland's two-goal lead with a goal from another penalty corner. Thomas Crols scored a consolation goal for Belgium, but it wasn't enough to stop Ireland claiming a rare Pro League win. Player of the Match Jaime Carr said: 'It was nice to bounce back after yesterday, we were very disappointed as a team. I was happy to contribute a little bit to that. Defensively that was a much better performance, and where we wanted to be. 'We beat Belgium twice last year, but we have been struggling to get over the line this year. It's nice to get a win on the board.' Next up for Ireland, is a clash with Australia on Tuesday at 2.30pm.

Ally McCoist sets off on gruelling charity ride around Ireland despite his bike BREAKING DOWN just days before

ALLY McCOIST is back in the saddle for his latest charity cycle event – but only after dealing with a few worrying mechanical issues first! The Scotland and Rangers icon headed off from Belfast this morning to take on the 555-mile, six-day ride around Ireland as part of the Doddie'5 Lions Challenge. 5 5 5 Joining McCoist in the fundraising effort are Scotland rugby great Kenny Logan, his wife and broadcaster, Gabby, former rugby stars Mel Deane and Will Greene and actor Jamie Bamber. The group will cover up to 100 miles a day in memory of Scotland legend Doddie Weir, who sadly passed away in 2022, and to raise money for research into motor neurone disease. So far, the challenge has raised more than £300,000 for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, with hopes of hitting the £500,000 mark before the final leg. The ride will finish in Dublin on Friday where the team will deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium ahead of the British and Irish Lions' clash with Argentina. Logan says McCoist – who also took part in the 2023 charity cycle from Edinburgh to Paris - will fill the role again of trying to keep everyone's spirits up during the gruelling ordeal. But he revealed his close pal nearly never made it all – because he kept fiddling with his bike's settings! Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about but his bike broke down the other day. 'I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him! 'We've lost a few to injury and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. 'I'm not going to lie – I've had my own aches and pains. Rangers legend Ally McCoist labelled 'Scotland's James Bond' as he takes an Easter dip in freezing cold loch 'No major injuries thankfully, but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age! 'I'm most nervous about the hills. 'I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. 'I've always had them before a big challenge, and it means I care.' This year's event is both a tribute to Weir and a rallying cry to continue his legacy. 5 5 Logan added: 'The support's been incredible. 'We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. 'The Foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. 'That's why we're doing this.' Seven Scots are in the Lions squad for the tour after Zander Fagerson withdrew due to injury. Logan admits he's disappointed winger Darcy Graham never got the nod – but thinks there might be time yet for the Edinburgh flier to make the plane to Australia. He added: 'I still think Darcy will go – there's a lot of rugby to be played between now and then, and there will be injuries. 'We've seen that with Zander missing out already. 'Overall it's great to see so many Scots in the squad – they'll be out to make their mark in Australia and put down a marker for the Test team.' All funds raised will support the Foundation's mission to find effective treatments – and ultimately a cure – for motor neurone disease.
