Hundreds gathered Thursday night to celebrate the leaders helping 'build the bridges to success' in Cleburne as the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce hosted the 106th annual awards celebration.
Pinnacle Bank Regional President Tim Whitlock received the Citizen of the Year award, and Farmers Insurance Agent Blake Jones received the Wall of Fame award. Several new awards were also added this year, including the All Aboard Partnership Award, which was presented to Bennett's Printing & Office Supply owners Gary and Melissa Bennett.
Cleburne Mayor Scott Cain reflected on the year 2024 and the city's successes.
'Seven hundred forty-nine new homes, 465 new residents, 154 new certificates of occupancy … I think you could say Cleburne is growing,' Cain said. 'Why are people wanting to move to Cleburne? And the answer is really simple, it's our people. It's you — people come to your shops and to your businesses, and they see that Cleburne spirit, and they want to be a part of it. And they come here.'
Citizen of the Year
The Citizen of the Year Award recognizes a local resident that has served the community with outstanding selfless service.
'Tim's gracious spirit, unwavering selflessness and loyalty to our community is beyond measure,' Trammell said. 'He truly set the example of what Cleburne represents. His selflessness is reflected in his compassion and dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of anyone he meets.'
Whitlock has worked in Cleburne his entire life. He serves on the Texas Health hospital board, Jump Start, The Fathers House Board and Pinnacle Bank board of directors.
Over the years he has been involved in multiple boards and committees in Cleburne, including the chamber, Leadership Cleburne, Boy Scout Breakfast, Jaycee's, Tuesday Forum, Honorary Chairperson for East Cleburne Community Center banquet, United Way of Johnson County president and Cleburne Economic Development Foundation. He was integral in getting LifeVac systems into all CISD schools. He also introduced Cleburne ISD to the HOPE Squad through the Elizabeth Jordan Foundation.
He was one of the founding board members of Fathers House, Spark Worldwide ministries and the Jump Start program.
Wall of Fame
The Wall of Fame Award is presented to a chamber member who exemplifies true voluntary chamber effort and support.
'This award is for a second mile effort that results in a significant contribution to the successful completion of a project or to the continuing chamber program,' Trammell said. 'Blake has been instrumental in the growth of the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce and community for years.'

He has held various leadership roles, including three terms on the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce executive board. In 2019, he served as president of the Cleburne Rotary Club, and in 2015, he was honored with the Young Business Professional Award.

'The Cleburne Lions Club's most significant focus is on eyesight conservation, particularly for students in our community,' Trammell said. 'In addition to its work in eyesight conservation, the Lions Club is one of the longest-serving volunteer groups for the Meals on Wheels program, delivering meals four days a week to those in need.'
The club also engages with Adams Elementary School as their adoptive school, listening to students twice a week, to help foster literacy and learning. The club actively collects winter coats and gear for local families, recycles eyeglasses for the Lions 2-E2 Eyeglass Recycling Center in Watauga, and hosts community events like the Drug Awareness Poster Contest for CISD and the Diabetes Essay Contest.

'By pairing these students with caring adults, Mentors Care creates a lifeline for young people who might otherwise feel invisible or unsupported.'
The organization joined the chamber in 2024 and aligned its mission with the chamber's goals. They used all the marketing avenues the chamber has to offer, which assisted in finding mentors to fulfill their mission.

Kemp joins Florida, South Carolina request to directly manage fish populations instead of feds
Gov. Brian Kemp joined a request from Florida and South Carolina governors Ron DeSantis and Henry McMaster to move management of fish populations to the state. Specifically, the three governors sent a letter to U.S. Commerce Sec. Howard Lutnick requesting that the states handle management of red snapper and other reef fish populations found in the Atlantic Ocean. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] "As we work with the administration to cut red tape and empower states to do what is best for our people, Governor Ron DeSantis, Governor Henry McMaster, and I are requesting state management of red snapper and other reef fishes in the Atlantic," Kemp said in a statement. 'Our fishing industry has suffered under heavy handed federal regulations imposed by bureaucrats thousands of miles away. It's time this industry is managed much closer to home!' TRENDING STORIES: Lyft driver taken hostage at Dawson County Sheriff's Office Atlanta rent prices down 1% compared to 2024, but rose month-to-month Acworth police save life of man choking on water bottle cap using LifeVac device In terms of what the states want to do, the governors said the current management of fish populations are 'driven by flawed data and regulations that threaten the economies of our coastal communities.' While the states are 'committed to helping our recreational fishing communities,' the governors said they are also working to conserve fisheries as resources for future generations. 'The first step to correcting course on federal mismanagement is to stop the harmful impacts of Amendment 59 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region,' the three officials said in their letter. The letter lays the blame on 'decades of inaction by career bureaucrats within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,' as well as actions taken at the end of the Biden Administration, which 'cut-off public access to the fishery' and have made it harder for communities to 'exercise their God-given right to fish and support their local economies and way of life.' Kemp and his fellow governors said the red snapper population is no longer being over-fished and as a result, they would like a large increase to the quota allowance for fishing the species, due to their current level of 'unprecedented abundance.' New R.I. program will train aspiring local real estate developers
Local Return President Q. What is Local Return and what is the Jumpstart Rhode Island program? David: Local Return's mission is to build community wealth in Rhode Island neighborhoods through community ownership and investment. We're focused on closing the opportunity and prosperity gaps in communities that have experienced decades of neglect or extraction. In 2024, we launched a fundraising offering for Rhode Island's first (and only) community investment fund. Get Rhode Map A weekday briefing from veteran Rhode Island reporters, focused on the things that matter most in the Ocean State. Enter Email Sign Up Local Return has launched the Jumpstart Rhode Island program "to revitalize Rhode Island and build community wealth through training, mentoring, and networking for local aspiring real estate developers." Handout Advertisement While we are actively raising the $3.5 million for the Local Return diversified community investment fund, we also know we need to build a strong pipeline of potential investments — which is where Jumpstart Rhode Island comes in. This program provides training, mentoring, and networking for aspiring local real estate developers. It's really intended for small-scale, neighborhood-based developers. We're starting this June with a cohort focused on Providence. Where did you get this idea? Is something similar being done in other places? Jumpstart was started by real estate developer Ken Weinstein from Philly Office Retail in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia in 2015. Since then, the program has expanded to 15 other communities nationwide. To date, more than 2,900 people have graduated from Jumpstart programs in Philadelphia. They generously shared their curriculum and provided us with support as we adapted the program to Rhode Island. Advertisement What are some of the skills that people will learn in the program? The curriculum is built around seven 'Jumpsteps' that walk through the development process, from creating a strategy and team, to doing due diligence, to leasing or selling your property. We'll cover the basics of financing, zoning, and permitting. Students will learn how to develop a pro forma [projections for the potential financial return of a proposed development], find a contractor, and manage a construction process. We are also working with a few wonderful local partners to make sure our students have opportunities to learn financial literacy and construction skills. What is the need for this program in Rhode Island? There's a huge need! We urgently need to create more homes for Rhode Islanders. Neighborhood-based developers are an important piece of the solution. Plus, real estate ownership is how most people in this country build wealth for their families. But we need to create more pathways for everyday Rhode Islanders to learn how to develop responsibly, so they're not risking their own financial security or the safety of future occupants. Right now, unless you're connected to someone that has experience with real estate development or have the wherewithal to learn as you go, it's not an easy field to break into. What are the main goals you are hoping to achieve? We love this program because it aims to accomplish several things at once: create opportunities for local residents to invest in their neighborhoods, build wealth locally, and promote diversity in real estate development. Residents know their neighborhoods best, and they have the most at stake in making their community a great place to live. Advertisement How and when can people apply? Applications for our first cohort are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 19. Training sessions will take place on three Saturdays, June 7, 14, and 21. Providence residents and people who have a strong commitment and connection to the city are welcome to apply.
