Victrola adds more wireless options to its Sonos-compatible turntables
If you own one of Victrola's high-end, Sonos-ready turntables from the last few years, your techie record player is about to get more versatile. The company said on Thursday that all of its "Works with Sonos" vinyl turntables will support Bluetooth, Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and hi-fi Roon streaming through a software update.
The update will dramatically increase the streaming versatility of the Stream Carbon, Pearl and Onyx turntables. Meanwhile, Victrola says the ultra-premium Sapphire player, which also supports those standards, has already received the update. The company says it will install automatically, and the new options will appear in the section of the app where you previously only saw the option to pick a default Sonos speaker.
While the new capabilities are good news for anyone who spent anywhere from $600 to $1,500 on a hi-tech vinyl player, it seems curious (if not infuriating) that the premium gear launched without these capabilities despite having all the requisite hardware. And while the company framed the update as a natural continuation of its mission to help vinyl lovers, you could look at Sonos' calamitous year and speculate that Victrola calculated that hitching too many horses to that post might not be the best idea.
An incomprehensibly botched Sonos app update in May led to months of downward spiraling. Despite numerous attempts to plug holes, the debacle culminated in two rounds of layoffs and the departure of its CEO and chief product officer in January. Although Victrola launched cheaper Sonos-less alternatives to the same turntables months before Sonos' plummet began, it's easy to imagine it nervously eyeing that mess and deciding now is a good time to awaken the Sonos variants' dormant wireless capabilities.
"This update is a major step forward in our mission to blend the warmth of vinyl with the convenience of modern wireless audio," Victrola Scott Hagen wrote in a press release. "The Victrola Stream turntables have been the best option for Sonos users, and now we're extending that same effortless streaming experience to even more audio ecosystems. Vinyl lovers can now enjoy premium wireless flexibility without compromise."

Sonos is finally updating its Ace headphones with a long-delayed feature
Sonos has released a major software update for its Ace wireless headphones bringing performance improvements and a feature that was supposed to originally be available late last year. TrueCinema mode, which adapts the headphone's spatial audio to your space and makes the virtual surround sound effect more convincing, is finally available, as spotted by What Hi-Fi? The feature is similar to Sonos' TruePlay that optimizes the sound of the company's speakers by measuring the acoustics in a room using a smartphone that listens to how sounds reflect off walls and surfaces. With TrueCinema, a Sonos sound bar measures a room's acoustics while the mics on the Ace headphones determine your exact listening location and adapt the 3D spatial audio so it sounds like there's speakers all around you. The new software update is also expanding the headphones' TV Audio Swap feature which lets you send the audio from a supported Sonos soundbar to the Ace for private listening. The feature was originally limited to the Sonos Arc soundbar and needed to be activated with an iPhone or iPad. Last August, Sonos expanded the TV Audio Swap's compatibility to include its more affordable Beam and Ray soundbars, and Android devices. Sonos' update further expands TV Audio Swap's capabilities so that it now works with two sets of Ace headphones simultaneously, allowing two people to watch TV together without disturbing others. Sonos says the Ace will also benefit from enhanced active noise cancellation that adapts to how the headphones fit on your head. The ANC will now compensate in real-time for sound leakage caused by hair, glasses, or hats preventing the Ace from making a tight acoustic seal around your ears. The headphones will now also use high resolution audio during phone calls and a new feature called SideTone will add a bit of your voice to the audio when ANC is turned on so calls sound more natural.

Qualcomm says its new AR1+ Gen 1 chip can handle AI directly on smart glasses
Qualcomm's has launched its latest processor for smart glasses, and though it's a modest upgrade over the previous chip, it has a new trick. The Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 can run AI directly on devices with no need for a smartphone or cloud connection, allowing users to go out or do chores with only their smart glasses, the company claims. The chip could appear in next-gen AR glasses from the likes of Meta and XReal. Smart glasses often require large temple arms to accommodate chips and other components, but the AR1+ Gen 1 is 28 percent smaller than the the AR1 Gen 1, so it allows for a 20 percent temple height reduction. At the same time, it requires less power across key use cases including computer vision, wake with voice, Bluetooth playback and video streaming. Qualcomm also promises "premium" image quality via technologies like binocular display support, image stabilization and a massive multi-frame engine. The key feature, though, is the on-glass AI powered by Qualcomm's 3rd-gen Hexagon NPU, with 1 billion small language model (SLM) parameters on-glass. That allows it to run AI assistants that use SLMs like Llama 1B, with users speaking commands and seeing the results displayed on the glasses as text. "While on stage, I was at the 'supermarket' and asked my glasses for help with fettuccine alfredo I needed to make for my daughter's birthday party," wrote Qualcomm SVP of XR Ziad Asghar. "This demonstration was a world's first: an Autoregressive Generative AI model running completely on a pair of smart glasses." Qualcomm shouted out Meta's Ray-Ban glasses as well as its chunky Orion AR glasses prototype as examples of where smart glass technology is heading. It then added that tech like its Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 chip will enable "sleeker form factors that don't compromise on the ability to run AI models." Reading between the lines, you can expect the chip to appear in ever-slimmer standalone AI-powered smart glasses in the near future.
