Haaser upstages Odermatt and Swiss for world giant slalom gold

Yahoo14-02-2025

Austria's Raphael Haaser upstaged defending champion Marco Odermatt and the Swiss men's team to claim world giant slalom gold on home snow in Saalbach on Friday.
Haaser, who won silver in last week's super-G behind Odermatt, timed 2min 39.71sec down the Schneekristall piste in overcast conditions.
The Swiss pair of Thomas Tumler and Loic Meillard rounded out the podium, at 0.23 and 0.51sec respectively, with Odermatt fourth a further 0.07sec adrift.
"I'm very happy with the day's race," said Haaser. "I really do not know where this came from.
"I thought top 10, but being top of podium, well I did not expect that. Business as usual for Austria!"
Norway's Timon Haugan, quickest down the first run, had headed into the second and decisive leg of the GS with a vital 0.24sec advantage over defending champ Odermatt, the odds-on favourite.
But it was not to be for either of them.
"The first run I was pretty accurate, the second I really tried to push," said Odermatt, whose super-G victory was the first of three straight golds for the Swiss men's team (downhill, team combined).
"I think even with a perfect run it would have been very tight for me to win. Fourth place is never nice."
It was an astonishing victory for Haaser, who had never made a GS podium before and whose place in the team had come at the last minute at the expense of Manuel Feller.
"He's had a tough season with an injury, and then a very strong comeback with two second places and then finally victory in the world giant slalom, which is amazing," Austrian ski federation CEO Christian Scherer said.
"We always had trust and confidence in him because he's a very talented skier. It's also great that we closed the gap in the medal tally and it's not over yet."
Germany's Anton Grammel made the early running, laying down a barn-storming run after finishing 22nd fastest in the first leg.
The lead then passed in quick succession from Slovenia's Zan Kranjec and Norway's Atle Lie McGrath to France's Thibaud Favrot and Norway's 2019 GS champion Henrik Kristoffersen.
The partisan, flag-waving, airhorn-blowing, 15,000-strong crowd packed in around the finish area erupted when home favourite Marco Schwarz came down to take the provisional lead.
But that was short-lived as 35-year-old Tumler, who notched up his maiden World Cup victory just this season, clocked 2:39.94.
- 'No can do' -
That left the top six to come.
Italy's Luca De Aliprandini made a mistake to fade away from a podium placing before the crowd went wild for Haaser, who had impressed in the super-G a day after his sister Ricarda suffered a season-ending knee injury in the women's race.
The Austrian regained his footing after an early mistake to shoot into the lead and pile the pressure on the four remaining racers.
There was drama as Norway's Alexander Steen Olsen, second in the World Cup GS standings behind Odermatt, threatened but went into the red and finally skied out.
Odermatt looked in impressive gliding form, but his skis ran away from him, a late turn losing him valuable seconds as he came down behind Haaser and Tumler.
Next up was Meillard, boasting a 0.60sec advantage. The 28-year-old consolidated that lead on the first two intermediaries, but then lost time, albeit edging in ahead of Odermatt.
All eyes turned to the start hut and the figure of Haugan.
And the pressure told, the Norwegian making a massive mistake three gates in that saw his -0.62sec deficit instantly change to +0.11sec surplus.
But he battled back, only to lose costly tenths of seconds in the final descent to finally finish seventh, a full second off Haaser.
"I was very nervous as I've never been in this position before, leading at halfway," said Haugan.
"I still think of it as such a cool experience and will learn from this for the future."
Norway-born Lucas Pinheiro Braathen's hopes of securing a first-ever world medal for Brazil, after a fall-out with the Norwegian federation saw him switch allegiance to his mother's homeland, finished 14th, 1.44sec off Haaser's winning time.
"It was a tough day," said Pinheiro Braathen. "I just was not on the level, I never felt comfortable on my skis.
"It has been 'no can do' at these world champs."

USA routs Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in Gold Cup opener, snaps four-game losing streak

The U.S. men's national team dominated Trinidad and Tobago in its opening Gold Cup match on Sunday, cruising to a decisive 5-0 win. Malik Tillman and Patrick Agyemang combined for three goals before halftime, while Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright came off the bench to add two more in the second. The strong and relentless performance by a young American squad was a complete 180-degree turn from the way the group looked over the last week in consecutive losses to Turkiye and Switzerland, which drew mounds of public criticism. While Trinidad and Tobago wasn't exactly the same caliber opponent, this is exactly how the U.S. wanted to begin tournament play. Here are takeaways from the match: McGlynn, Luna making early World Cup cases Jack McGlynn and Diego Luna, two midfielders who have already been bright spots for this team so far this calendar year, are certainly endearing themselves further to Pochettino and his staff. Sunday, Luna had two assists and should have scored in the first half. On the second goal in the 41st minute, Luna found himself alone streaking down the left wing. Rather than take a shot himself, he slipped a pinpoint pass to a streaking Tillman, who nailed the ball into the back of the net. On the third goal, Luna's shot deflected off Agyemang and bounced past goalkeeper Marvin Phillip. McGlynn, meanwhile, continually found himself in dangerous areas and was creative in the final third. Leading up to this match – and dating back to the Concacaf Nations League Finals in March – the USMNT struggled to finish. That wasn't an issue on Sunday, like on this opening goal in the first 15 minutes when McGlynn chipped the ball across the mouth of the goal to Tillman. Solid performance in goal by Freese Pochettino opted to play Matt Freese in goal over Matt Turner in the USMNT's first Gold Cup match. The manager had said he trusted Turner, but wanted to give Freese, who had one cap entering this game, more experience. While Trinidad and Tobago didn't threaten often – the USMNT out shot its opponent 21-3, 11-2 in shots on goal – Freese needed to spring into action a few times and was successful. Like on this early chance in the second half. Can we expect Pochettino to rotate goalkeepers throughout the Gold Cup? We'll see who he starts later this week when the U.S. faces Saudi Arabia in its second match. What's next for the USMNT? The Americans will travel to Austin where they'll face Saudi Arabia on Thursday, June 19 (9:15 p.m. ET on FOX) at Q2 Stadium. The Saudis, who are in the middle of 2026 World Cup qualifying, could prove to be a stiffer test for the U.S. than Trinidad and Tobago turned out to be. The team is led by manager Herve Renard, who was the squad's coach at the 2022 World Cup when it pulled off a massive group stage upset over eventual champion Argentina. The last time these nations met was the USMNT's final tune-up match before the 2022 World Cup and they tied 0-0 in Murica, Spain. USMNT player ratings versus Trinidad and Tobago as Gold Cup begins for Pochettino's men

Malik Tillman and Diego Luna were silver linings in the dark clouds of the United States men's national team's friendly losses to Turkiye and Switzerland earlier this month, and they led the way in sweeping them out of the sky — at least for a few days — on Sunday. The USMNT opened its Gold Cup with a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago that snapped a four-game losing skid across all competitions, as Tillman scored twice and Luna had two assists in building a three-goal halftime lead. MORE — USMNT 5-0 T&T recap, video highlights The vibes are much-improved ahead of Thursday's meeting with Saudi Arabia, and Mauricio Pochettino will hope that Tillman's limp late in the second half was just a knock as the PSV Eindhoven midfielder looks key to the program's 2025 Gold Cup hopes. Here's how we saw the player ratings from Sunday's five-goal win. USMNT player ratings versus Trinidad and Tobago Matt Freese: 7 — One slip-up in judgment, but two saves and 15-of-15 passing will do just fine. Max Arfsten: 7 — Many will expect to see a higher number here, as Arfsten had two assists and was a constant presence in the attack. But he again looked his age in his own end and that will be a huge question against better oppositon. Tim Ream: 7.5 — Calm, solid, well-positioned. Chris Richards (Off 87'): 7 — Very good in almost all of his moments over 87 minutes, but two of his weak moments helped yield T&T's best chances. Alex Freeman: 7 — Passed the ball well and was excellent in the duel, but he also lost Dante Seely on what would've been a goal had Freese not got a hand on the cross. Sebastian Berhalter: 6 — Good with the ball but struggled in 50/50 situations. Still fine and has not been a problem in any of the three games this break. Luca de la Torre (Off 83'): 7 — Steady day with and without the ball. Diego Luna (Off 74'): 8.5 — Fantastic. The hunger recalls a bygone era of USMNT, and the playmaking ability is timeless. He looks like a potential game-changing sub at the World Cup, but putting a ceiling on his playing time is silly. Let's see how he does against Saudi Arabia and then in the knockout rounds, because he's too much for T&T and (likely) Haiti. Malik Tillman: 9 — Tillman is in an elite class amongst this group. He matched McGlynn with four created chances, passed at 91%, scored two goals, and made seven recoveries. Right now he's earned a chance to start with the so-called A-steam. Jack McGlynn (Off 74'): 7.5 — Brilliant assist as one of four created chances (according to Patrick Agyemang (Off 74'): 7 — The goal was right-place, right-time, but he had earned a place on the score sheet with his other four shot attempts. The Rhode Island graduate is a force and Pochettino clearly likes what he sees from Agyemang. Subs Haji Wright (On 74') : 7.5 — Scored a great goal. Likely deserves a start but Agyemang isn't opening the door. Mark McKenzie (On 74'): N/A Brenden Aaronson (On 74'): 7 — Nice to see him back on the score sheet. Paxten Aaronson (On 83'): N/A Miles Robinson (On 87'): N/A

It's a Rose Bowl Rout! PSG Thumps Atlético Madrid 4-0 at the Club World Cup

Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, and Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened Club World Cup play with a 4-0 victory over Atlético Madrid on Sunday. PSG largely dominated Atlético at the Rose Bowl in its first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31. Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atlético in the second half of the European powers' meeting in front of 80,619 fans at the site of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup. Atlético's Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute with his second yellow card on a frustrating day that left Diego Simeone visibly furious at both the referees and his players' mistakes. Ousmane Dembele wasn't in uniform for PSG after reportedly injuring a quadriceps while playing for France on June 6. Goncalo Ramos replaced Dembélé in Luis Enrique's only change to the starting lineup from the Champions League final. Enrique wore shorts and a training shirt on the sideline while coaching PSG in 88-degree midday California heat (31 Celsius). PSG controlled possession early, and Ruiz capitalized atop the penalty area in the 19th minute. The Spanish midfielder long coveted by Atlético beat Jan Oblak with a clever strike into the far corner. Vitinha followed with a goal in injury time off Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's second assist of the first half. Julian Alvarez appeared to answer for Atlético in the second half, but the goal was waved off after VAR determined Koke had fouled Desire Doue in the buildup. Alexander Sørloth horrifically missed an open net in the 82nd minute for Atlético. Mayulu iced PSG's victory five minutes later, and Lee converted a penalty on the final kick of the match. Atlético got a golden chance to tie it in first-half injury time, but Gianluigi Donnarumma swallowed up Thomas Griezmann's hard shot in the box. Moments later, Vitinha slipped through the Atlético defense and scored on the break. PSG looked remarkably sharp late in its taxing season, showing no sign of treating this tournament as an anticlimax. The champs are in good shape to advance from group play after winning their toughest group match on paper. Atlético somehow looked more exhausted than its opponents, and it collected seven yellow cards that raise the danger of suspension down the road. Simeone's club will be favored in its next two matches, but will have less margin for error. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
