
Spike in heavy vehicles hogging fast lane raises alarm
SEREMBAN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has raised the alarm over a rising number of heavy vehicles illegally using the right-most lane on highways, which not only breaches traffic laws but also increases the risk of serious accidents.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said there has been a steady increase in the number of goods service vehicles (KPB) and public service vehicles (KPA) using the fast lane, with 800 cases recorded last year. As of April this year, 220 summonses have been issued for the same offence.
'This trend is worrying. When these vehicles are in the far-right lane, it means they are likely exceeding their speed limits, which are supposed to be between 80 and 90 kilometres per hour.
'There is clear evidence that some are going over 100 km/h. This has been a key factor in many accidents involving heavy vehicles,' he said.
Aedy was speaking to reporters during a roadside enforcement operation at the southbound rest area in Seremban, part of a broader crackdown on technical violations by commercial vehicles. Also present was Negeri Sembilan JPJ director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf.
He said Rule 4A of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 prohibits heavy vehicles from using the right lane and stricter enforcement measures will be implemented to ensure better compliance.
In a separate statement, Aedy said the JPJ will launch a nationwide enforcement campaign from June 4 to 10, in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday, targeting traffic law violations by road users.
These include speeding, running red lights, overtaking on double lines, misuse of emergency lanes and queue-jumping, all of which fall under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333).
This will include special operations involving audits at bus depots and terminals, checks on goods vehicles, and inspections targeting motorcycles and technical safety.
Aedy said the department remains committed to reducing road casualties and is working toward halving the number of deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

It has happened again, just as road safety experts had warned. Fifteen lives were lost on Monday in a collision between a tour bus ferrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students and a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle on the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak. Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah has decreed improvements to law enforcement. The authorities must follow the royal decree to the letter to avoid such tragedies. The mangled remains of what was once a tour bus are not just a tragic image of the past; they might be images of many futures if the authorities keep doing the same thing. We are told that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is conducting a safety inspection, and an audit on the express bus and its operator. Let's be blunt: this is after the fact. For sure, such audits will arm the authorities with evidence to make every individual, from the operator to the driver, accountable should they be found to have broken any laws. But conducting an audit is one thing, and acting on the findings is another. Just like discovering that the tour bus had 21 traffic summonses and the driver 18 and still allowing both to be on the road. From Aug 13, 2007, to Nov 5, 2022, there have been seven major bus crashes that claimed 124 lives. Were audits conducted on these buses and their operators? If so, how many operators have been charged in court or had their businesses suspended? With tragedies like this happening with troubling frequency, the people have the right to know. But JPJ must not stop at the audit of the tour bus and its operator. It is time for JPJ to go on a nationwide inspection and audit of all heavy vehicles and their operators. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has told the media that the tour bus had no seat belts for passengers. To discover this after a tragedy is a tragedy itself. Had an audit been done, the bus operator could have been compelled to install seat belts even though the bus was built before the seat-belt law came into force. There shouldn't be an exception for passenger buses. The minister also told the press that dashboard cameras and speed limiters are in the process of being made mandatory. The "in the process" is troubling, to say the least. We have heard this before from a former transport minister. Nothing happened. But what happened were tragedies after tragedies. Operators will resist, because more trips mean more profits. If the aim is to save lives, then the authorities must throw the statute book at them. The fear appears to be that such devices can easily be disabled by the operators as the owners of lorries are already doing it to speed limiters and Global Positioning System. But that should not be a reason for not installing the devices. The law is there; just haul the operators to court. Operators who allow their heavy vehicles to turn into killer machines must be put out of business. Period.

'We survived… but I still can't talk about it' – Alza driver on Gerik tragedy
BALING: The driver of the Perodua Alza involved in the fatal collision with a tour bus near Tasik Banding, Gerik, on Monday remains traumatised and has yet to recount the incident in full. "I still vividly remember what happened that day, but I still can't talk about it," said Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37. On that fateful day, he was travelling with his wife, Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36, and their two children — Nur Aisyah Nafishah, 6, and Muhammad Ahsan Nafis, 2 — when the collision occurred along the East-West Highway. The family was returning to their home in Parit Panjang after celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha in Terengganu. Speaking briefly at Baling Hospital, where the family is receiving treatment, Lutfi said he remembered the moments leading up to the crash but could not recall what happened immediately afterwards. "One of my children was thrown from the vehicle… but I'm thankful that we all survived," he said, adding that he had been chatting with his wife shortly before the collision. Lutfi, a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Malau in Baling, and Nurul Ain, who teaches at SK Tembak, are reported to be in stable condition. Their daughter, Nur Aisyah Nafishah, suffered a fracture to her right thigh and will require surgery, while Nurul Ain sustained broken ribs and remains under close observation. Orthopaedic specialist Dr Asri Zuzairudin Mohd Ali said both Lutfi and their son had stabilised and are continuing treatment at the hospital. "All four family members are still undergoing care here," he said. The Kedah State Education Department is monitoring the couple's condition. Senior assistant director (Schools Unit) Wan Norazman Zainol said the department would ensure the family received any necessary support during their recovery. The crash occurred in the early hours of Monday when a tour bus carrying 42 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students collided with the Alza. The students were travelling from Jerteh, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. Fifteen students were killed in the accident.

Gerik crash: 'Ayuni answered call with 'hello', then went silent'
BESUT: The family of Nor Ayuni Maslan, 21, one of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in the Gerik bus crash, were overcome with emotion when they came across the wreckage on their way to Gerik Hospital. Her brother, Ahmad Azizul Maslan, 26, said they did not know about her fate at the time and had hoped for the best. "I received a call about 4am from one of her friends, informing us about the accident involving the bus she was on. "When we tried to contact her, she answered once, said 'hello', then fell silent. "Even though she picked up the call three times, she didn't say anything. "That's when we started fearing for the worst." He said this at their family home in Felda Tenang after a visit from Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council chief executive officer Associate Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Azrin Adnan. Azizul said the family found out about Ayuni's death after checking with the hospital. The youngest of eight siblings, Ayuni had returned home the day before Hari Raya Aidiladha. Her father, Maslan Abdul Rahman, 58, said the family celebrated her 21st birthday just two hours before she boarded the bus at Masjid Hadhari in Jertih. He said Ayuni had suddenly become quiet and pensive during the drive to the departure point with her friend. "She called to say her seat was number three and on the left side of the bus," Maslan said. On the apology from bus driver Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, 39, Maslan said the family had accepted Ayuni's passing. "We as a family have decided to forgive him. But it's up to the authorities to decide what action to take. "For Ayuni's peace, we have let go and forgiven him. Let the authorities take appropriate action if he is found to be at fault."
