Israeli Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich, a hardline right-winger in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet, has called for intensified military action in Gaza following the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
Newsweek has reached out to Hamas for comment.
Why It Matters
The comments are an indication of where Israel will turn its attention now the war with Iran appears to have been stopped after Israeli strikes on military and nuclear sites and Iranian retaliation against Israel with ballistic missiles and drones.
Iranian-backed Hamas, which set off the biggest upheavals in the Middle East for decades with its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, looks increasingly isolated as it battles for survival in the devastated Gaza Strip.
Israel's military campaign in Gaza was not halted by its strikes on Iran, but it did not yet achieve its goals of securing the release of remaining hostages taken by Hamas in the 2023 attack —prolonging a conflict that continues to shape both domestic politics, regional dynamics and bring international pressure.

What To Know
Smotrich said that Israel has achieved a "crushing victory in the campaign against Iran," adding: "Now with all our strength to Gaza, to complete the task," he wrote on X.
His comments came in response to Iranian missile fire on a residential building killing at least five people, according to Israeli authorities, and shortly after President Donald Trump said the ceasefire with Iran had come into effect on Tuesday morning, urging both sides to abide by it.
Hamas has expressed solidarity with Iran against Israeli and U.S. strikes but has not commented on the ceasefire agreement.
Israel said it has pursued its ground offensive in Gaza, while violent clashes around aid centers have also taken place in which dozens of Palestinians have been killed according to local authorities. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said several soldiers were killed by Hamas in the past week.
The United Nations has warned of the escalating crisis in Gaza, saying civilians are dying daily while seeking basic necessities like food, water, and medical care. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll has surpassed 55,000 Palestinians since the war began on October 7, 2023.
Hamas killed some 1,200 Israelis on that day and took more than 251 hostages, according to Israel's authorities, with nearly 20 still believed to be alive.
What People Are Saying
Israeli Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich on X: "We removed an immediate existential threat to the eternity of Israel and severely damaged the Iranian ayatollah regime, including by destroying dozens of targets in Tehran tonight. *Now with all our strength to Gaza*, to complete the task - to destroy Hamas and return our hostages and, with God's help, to ensure the people of Israel many years of security and growth from strength."
Hamas in statement on June 20, translated from Arabic: "In a recurring daily bloodshed, the terrorist occupation army today committed a series of horrific massacres against our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of around forty martyrs due to the bombing of homes and displaced persons' tents, and direct gunfire at starving civilians gathered near the Zionist-American-controlled humanitarian aid centers."
What Happens Next
With the focus shifted towards finding solutions to the conflict with Iran, it raises questions over whether there will be a renewed push for a ceasefire in Gaza or whether the conflict will intensify there.

An angry Trump decries Israel, Iran for breaking ceasefire

A visibly frustrated President Donald Trump condemned Israel and Iran Tuesday morning for violating a ceasefire that he had heralded one day earlier. 'We have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the fuck they're doing,' Trump told reporters on the White House lawn before departing to meet with NATO allies in the Netherlands. The president also suggested that the two countries might not have broken the ceasefire intentionally but quickly added that he planned to speak with Israeli leaders to persuade them to call off additional attacks. Moments after talking with reporters, Trump's irritation manifested in an all caps Truth Social post insisting Israel not strike Iran. 'ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!' Trump asserted in a corresponding post to his social media site that Israel was not going to attack Iran and that all planes would 'turn around and head home.' On Monday night, Trump told NBC News he expected the ceasefire to last 'forever.' But Iran reportedly launched further attacks on Israel early Tuesday and Israel Defense Force's chief of general staff said the country intends to respond with force. 'I don't like the fact that Israel went out this morning at all and I'm going to see if I can stop it,' Trump said before boarding Marine One.

MAGA Celebrates Florida's 'Alligator Alcatraz'—'Voted for Exactly This'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. A new plan to convert a remote Everglades airstrip into a migrant detention center, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," has been celebrated by MAGA supporters, who hailed it as a victory for the hard-line immigration agenda they voted for. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said the facility would be funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Shelter and Services Program, which has been used to provide housing and support for undocumented migrants. Why It Matters The remote facility is expected to cost Florida approximately $450 million annually to operate. The proposal comes as President Donald Trump's administration looks to conduct what they describe as the largest mass deportations operation in U.S. history. Rebecca Blackwell/AP What To Know In a video shared on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who came up with the plan, promoted the site's location as a natural barrier to prevent escapes. "This presents a great opportunity for the state of Florida to work with Miami Dade and Collier counties," he said. The 39-square-mile site is situated at the Miami Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. According to Uthmeier, the facility could become operational within 30 to 60 days after construction begins and could accommodate up to 1,000 immigrants who entered the country illegally. The site was chosen in part because it has an airstrip that could be used to fly in immigrants, according to Fox Business. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniela Levine Cava is pushing back against Uthmeier's proposal. "Due to the location of this parcel in a critical area, the conveyance of this parcel requires considerable review and due diligence," Levine Cava said in a statement. "It is also imperative that we fully understand the scope and scale of the proposed use of the site and what will be developed, as the impacts to the Everglades ecosystem could be devastating." The plan to create the detention center has been celebrated by MAGA loyalists as a step toward delivering on the immigration crackdown they've long demanded. One user on X, MAGA Voice, wrote: "I VOTED FOR EXACTLY THIS." Another user on the platform, @WCdispatch_ said: "Alligator Alcatraz is gonna be lit." What People Are Saying One user on X, @FedSlayer, said: "Florida's leading with boldness. Only in America do we turn a swamp into an escape proof prison. Anyone wanting to attempt an escape should be given a 10 minute headstart!" X user Jules31415 wrote: "Kristi Noem says the federal government will fund an effort by Florida to set up immigration detention centers, including a proposed site in the Everglades that's been dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz." Predictably, Dems are stark raving mad about this." X user Christopher Webb said in a post: "FLORIDA People are sick if they think this is okay. What kind of immigrants are they planning to dump on "Alligator Alcatraz"? Because in Los Angeles they're snatching flower-selling grandmas and men washing cars. These are human beings who deserve due process, not this cruelty." Journalist Karly Kingsley wrote in a post on X: "Florida's building "Alligator Alcatraz" by diverting FEMA shelter funds meant for housing and aid. They're not protecting anyone, they're stealing emergency relief money to build detention centers in a swamp. Cruelty is always the point." Noem said in a statement: "Under President Trump's leadership, we are working at turbo speed to deliver cost-effective and innovative ways to deliver on the American people's mandate for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens."
