Rebuild Bay County opens first transitional housing home in Panama City
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Rebuild Bay County is a long-term disaster recovery organization that started after Hurricane Michael.
On Thursday, members opened their first transitional home to provide temporary housing for disaster victims.
The goal is for the home to fill in the gap for Bay County residents in a transitional period.
Rebuild Bay will provide up to six months of shelter for individuals and families actively working to secure permanent housing or repair an uninhabitable home.
On 900 East 9th Court in Panama City, sits a new house that will help assist community members in need.

Habitat for Humanity spent the past two years building the three-bedroom, two-bath home that can house three individuals or a family.
After tornadoes hit Bay County last year on January 9, Rebuild Bay saw a need for more transitional housing.
'We have quite a few people in Panama City, in Bay County, that are working every day and just will experience something where they may have a death in the family that just puts their permanent housing situation at risk. And they may need just a little bit more time to kind of stabilize that position or get back into a permanent housing situation,' Rebuild Bay County Executive Director Donna Pilson said.
The temporary home will help eliminate the barriers for individuals who are trying to recover from disaster.
'If you have a lot of things on your, on your plate, if you are concerned about bills, insurance or whatever, being able to provide a place that you can come in that's warm, that's dry, that's safe for you to be able to get yourself to get things together that takes that burden off their mind and allows them to be able to take that next step,' Pilson added.
The home is designed to house someone who has recently experienced a disaster and plans to move out.
'We are not ruling out the homeless population. I would just say that that's not our target our target population for this particular program. We the ideal program participant will be someone that has a plan,' Pilson said.
Rebuild Bay is also working with Panama City Rescue Mission to open up an emergency shelter for the homeless population.
To live in the home, participants must be a Bay County resident, employed, and show a verifiable need. And they have to pay a program fee between $500 and $750.
Rebuild Bay is about to begin taking applications. Those selected can begin moving on June 1.
To apply, visit the A.D. Harris Learning Village or call their office at (850) 481-1357.

Habitat for Humanity develops new neighborhood in Bay County
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Bay Building Industries Association's Parade of Homes is coming to a close. The weekend-long home showcase, June 6-8, connected community members with BBIA's premier builders and industry professionals. This year, a Habitat for Humanity home is featured in the lineup. Marking the start of something much bigger. This home isn't just a part of the parade of homes. It's the very first of 15 planned houses in a brand new Habitat for Humanity subdivision. And it's turning heads all for the right reasons. Built with volunteer labor, the Habitat for Humanity home stands alongside high-end model houses on this year's tour. But its purpose is different. Providing safe, affordable housing for a local family in need. 'We have homeowners out there that are in dire straits with some of the conditions that they're living in. And of course, they have to apply. And there are some requirements there. They also have to put in 500 hours of sweat equity. That doesn't necessarily mean that they have to do it all themselves. They can get their family to put in contributing hours as well. But it's a great opportunity,' said Habitat for Humanity Bay County board member Travis Herr. Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes And for families on the waiting list, walking through this home as part of the parade is a powerful reminder that their future is under construction. One wall, one room, one opportunity at a time. 'I am somebody that moved around a lot. So this is the longest I've ever been somewhere else. And I think about the ability for total longevity for my son's sake is something beautiful because there is something to be said about building a community and family and laying roots,' future Habitat for Humanity homeowner Samantha Douglass said. Bay County Historical Society hosts annual Pioneer Day The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house located just off Tyndall Parkway is the nonprofit's first experience in creating an entire neighborhood from the ground up. Habitat for Humanity invites public to celebrate Davenport home dedication
The public is invited to help celebrate the dedication of Habitat Home #141 on Saturday, June 7, according to a news release. The brief ceremony will take place promptly at 10 a.m. at 1436 W. 8th St., Davenport. Guests can tour the home after the ceremony. This home build has been supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number 21.027 to the State of Iowa by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The referenced award was a result of the American Rescue Plan Act. This was a unique opportunity provided to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the state of Iowa, thanks to the work of Habitat of Iowa, the state support organization for local affiliates. This is the third home Habitat QC was able to build in Davenport thanks to these funds. Habitat's affordable home-ownership program is a long-term solution to the current affordable housing crisis. Habitat partner families must complete a minimum of 250 volunteer hours of sweat equity and attend mandatory home-ownership preparation classes with the support of a volunteer mentor. When their home build is finished, partner families purchase the home from Habitat with affordable monthly payments on a zero-interest mortgage. About HFHQC Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities is dedicated to building thriving communities. For more than 30 years, the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate has served low-income families with the construction of affordable homes. Habitat also operates a home repair program and an accessibility ramp program for low-income homeowners. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Orphaned bear cub ‘packed on the pounds' at NY rescue. See him return to wild
An orphaned black bear cub that defied the odds and 'survived a very cold winter alone' in upstate New York quickly 'packed on the pounds' and returned to the wild, video shows. The yearling cub was found all alone near skiing trails — 'so weak he could barely walk,' McClatchy News previously reported. 'The little guy was found on the slopes of Hunter Mt. in March,' Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center said in a Facebook post May 15. 'After only 60 days he packed on the pounds & he was ready to go home.' But as officials were getting ready to release him, more orphaned cubs joined him, the organization said in an April 23 post. 'Since Hunter bear (found on Hunter Mt) came in March, 3 more underweight and weak yearlings have landed with us as well as 5 cubs!' the organization said, adding that the Hunter Mountain bear looked good in a recent photo at the time. A photo shows the bear climbing on a log in his enclosure. Video of the bear's release shows him bursting out of a cage, then pausing to give a last look at the people who made his return to the wild possible. 'He looked back to say 'thank you!'' someone said in the comments. The cub hesitates before bounding off into the forest as someone off camera chuckles. 'I am crying,' someone said in the comments. 'It takes a big wide wild village.' The video also shows the release of another bear that the organization referred to as the Margaretville bear. 'She was spotted late last year as it was getting cold,' the organization said in the post. 'After two weeks of being seen running around looking for food in Margaretville, she was finally captured by Michael our long time volunteer. These two bears were extremely (underweight) when found & we are thrilled to say they made a great recovery. Let Wild Be Wild!' That bear took off into the forest with no hesitation, video shows. In a video shared shortly before the organization released the Hunter Mountain bear, four of the cubs are seen playing together in their enclosure. 'Just in case anyone was wondering what happens when you put 4 orphaned cubs in a 4x8 room,' the organization said in a May 3 post. 'If you guessed chaos you would be correct.' Video shows the cubs running around the enclosure, climbing up and down and then tumbling off a log. Several of the remaining cubs were released or will be released soon, according to posts from the organization and from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
