Burjeel earns NIHS accreditation for key programs
Burjeel Holdings, a leading super-specialty healthcare provider in the MENA region, has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare education by receiving accreditation from the National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS), a prestigious accreditation program in the UAE.
The two specialised medical training programs — Orthopedic Residency and Hematology-Oncology Fellowship — have secured this accreditation. The Hematology-Oncology Fellowship marks a milestone for Burjeel Holdings as the first healthcare provider in the UAE to achieve this recognition, while the accreditation for the Orthopedic Residency sets a precedent in Abu Dhabi's private healthcare sector.
The accreditation was officially conferred by Dr Mohammed Al Houqani, Secretary General of NIHS, during a ceremony attended by Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings, Dr. Rashed Alsuwaidi, the Acting Director General of Healthcare Regulatory at Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, John Sunil, Group CEO of Burjeel Holdings, and Safeer Ahamed, Group Co-CEO of Burjeel Holdings.
Dr Al Houqani praised Burjeel Holdings' role in advancing medical education, highlighting its significant contributions to training the healthcare workforce and equipping them with the highest global standards. He emphasized the Group's efforts in creating an ideal training environment based on best medical practices, which will strengthen the healthcare sector with specialized and qualified physicians capable of delivering high-quality medical services for healthcare challenges.
Speaking about this achievement, Dr Tahani Al Qadiri, Group Director of Emiratization and Academics at Burjeel Holdings, said this accreditation is a testament to Burjeel's commitment to raising the next generation of specialized healthcare professionals in the region. 'This milestone not only strengthens our position as a leader in private-sector medical education but also contributes significantly to Abu Dhabi's healthcare ecosystem by nurturing highly skilled specialists,' she added.
These specialised programs will provide rigorous, hands-on training for medical residents and fellows, equipping them with the expertise required to meet global healthcare standards. The Orthopedic Residency Program will prepare aspiring trainees with comprehensive clinical experience, while the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program will cultivate highly specialized expertise in cancer care.
According to Prof. Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute, the initiative will contribute to better patient outcomes. 'By establishing the first accredited Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program in the private sector in the country, we are creating a structured pathway for developing highly skilled oncologists who will play a crucial role in enhancing cancer care in the region,' he said.
Dr Mohamed Muath ADI, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Burjeel Medical City (BMC) and Program Director of the Orthopedic Residency Program, said that this milestone will enhance the quality of orthopedic education and training in the region, further elevating the standard of orthopedic care in the UAE.

Burjeel Holdings to manage Adnoc's new Das Hospital

This agreement supports Adnoc's commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness, improving healthcare accessibility, and promoting community wellbeing at Das Island, a statement said. The new Das Hospital is designed to serve as the primary healthcare and emergency response hub for Das Island residents. With its advanced infrastructure and comprehensive range of services, the facility will provide round-the-clock care for Adnoc's workforce, residents, and emergency medical cases arising from nearby locations. Burjeel Holdings will oversee all clinical and administrative functions of the hospital. The facility includes a broad range of outpatient specialties—such as general surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, occupational health, ENT, dental, ophthalmology, and cardiac and pulmonary unit. It also houses a fully equipped emergency department with a minor operating room, licensed pharmacies, and a dedicated blood bank. AD Ports Group and Burjeel Holdings have officially launched their healthcare logistics joint venture (JV), Docktour, during Make it in the Emirates forum, now underway in Abu Dhabi. The platform was unveiled at the Burjeel Holdings booth, in the presence of Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group; and Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings. Docktour marks a bold expansion in healthcare logistics, aiming at redefining how medical services and infrastructure are delivered to communities across Africa. It will serve as a comprehensive supply chain platform—integrating logistics, modular infrastructure, training, and emergency response into a single, unified ecosystem, said a statement. Docktour will supplement Burjeel Holdings' operations and management subsidiary, Operonix, which has a proven track record in managing large-scale healthcare projects across Africa.
