'We all experience it': Springfield-Greene County Health Department talks stress
April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month.
OzarksFirst is speaking with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department (SGCHD) about stress and how you can help limit its impact on your life.
Jordan Coiner with the SGCHD says there's no one definition for stress.
'There's not technically like one definition for stress. We all experience it, but it is experienced in different ways. So everyone, while they experience it, it looks different to everyone,' Coiner said.
How can stress impact you?
'The most common definition would be a mental or physical strain on the body,' Coiner said.
Coiner says it's important to recognize stress and take steps to address it.
'It can impact your health if it's not something that you're taking the time to really first recognize but also deal with,' Coiner said. 'Anything health related like that over time will impact you in a negative way.'
Coiner's advice? Find something you love and make time for that.
'One coping mechanism mechanisms for me would be working out, getting outside. Other methods would be journaling, things like that that really just help free the mind a little bit, breathe fresh air, things like that that just help alleviate that, that feeling of just kind of strain or stress on the body or mind,' Coiner said.

Local fair provides mental health resources and support to youth
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – In Springfield, a free mental health and wellness fair is supporting local youth. Wayfinders hosted the event, 'Springfield Rise and Thrive' for the first time. It's a resident and youth-led effort to raise mental health awareness and break the stigma in asking for help. Springfield middle and high school students got to immerse themeselves in a supportive peer community at Samuel Bolden Park. It featured poetry, drum and dance performances, inspirational speakers, and mental health resources. 'We want our young people to know there are other ways and other spaces and you're struggling with anything,' said Community Building and Engagement Director at WayFinders, Beatrice Dewberry. Youth Subcommittee member, Ryan Rodriguez adds, 'it's a nice thing to see the community come together, especially, you know, for the youth and just to show people that there's different outlets, you know, some people, they just need to talk to other people or you know or you need to connect with somebody.' Youth also took part in a Mental Health Pledge 'to be kind to their minds'which was the theme of the event. WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts. Springfield, Pennsylvania, commissioners approve micro-hospital, despite opposition from some residents
ChristianaCare has announced Springfield as its second location for a micro-hospital in Delaware County. This comes after the Springfield board of commissioners approved the project during a meeting Wednesday night. Eighty townhomes will be built near the micro-hospital. Some residents at the meeting expressed concerns about ambulance noise, traffic and stormwater runoff. ChristianaCare "I have mixed feelings about it," Gary Lockman from Springfield said. "Generally, I'm in favor of it. I think we need it. I know it doesn't replace the hospitals that have closed." The micro-hospital won't be as large as a full-scale hospital, but ChristianaCare said it will include 10 inpatient beds with an emergency room equipped to handle heart attacks, strokes, injuries and falls. Springfield solicitor Jim Byrne said the project will create jobs and generate more than a million dollars every year in tax revenue. "We believe the hospital will take all reasonable steps to minimize any impact on the surrounding residents, but the commissioners have to look at what's best for the whole town," Byrne said. ChristianaCare The new facility will be 2.5 miles from Springfield Hospital, which closed down three years ago. "I think it'll be good because we seem to be running out of hospitals with the closing of Crozer," Mike Whelan from Springfield said. The Springfield micro-hospital is set to open in late 2026. ChristianaCare's micro-hospital in Aston is set to open in late 2026 to early 2027.
