
Air India disaster deals heavy blow to 'world class airline' ambition
NEW DELHI, June 12 (Reuters) - The Air India plane crash in which more than 200 passengers were killed on Thursday has plunged the airline into its deepest crisis yet and will deal a heavy blow to its efforts to revamp its reputation and fleet.
After taking the carrier over from the government in 2022, the Tata Group unveiled ambitious plans to reverse years of underinvestment in an ageing and outdated fleet and create a "world class airline", as CEO Campbell Wilson has repeatedly put it, on a par with rivals like Emirates.
The turnaround has been aimed at tackling its myriad problems including persistent flight delays, disgruntled customers, a shortage of spare parts, delayed plane deliveries and years of financial losses.
"Newer aircraft and better maintenance should be the hallmark for Air India to survive. Proper maintenance is what they should be looking into, because Air India has had a chequered past," said Vibhuti Deora, a former legal expert at India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.
That past includes, while under government ownership, Boeing 737 flight from Dubai overshooting the runway at one domestic airport and crashing into a gorge in 2010, killing 158 people. More recently, its low-cost unit Air India Express saw one craft skid off a runway in India in 2020, killing 21 people.
Only a few days ago, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told an international gathering of hundreds of airline executives in New Delhi that the country's aviation industry stood at a crucial point of takeoff.
On Thursday, however, Air India swapped the bright red colour scheme and logo on its website for a more sombre black and grey one, covering it with a banner that carried the crashed flight's number: "AI-171".
"For an airline, the most important thing is the brand's identity with safety. This will be a major setback for the brand in that aspect," said Dilip Cherian, a communications consultant and co-founder of public relations firm Perfect Relations.
With its maharajah mascot, Air India was once renowned for its lavishly decorated planes and stellar service championed by its founder, JRD Tata, India's first commercial pilot.
But since the mid-2000s, the carrier's reputation has worsened as financial troubles mounted. It has flown widebody planes with business class seats in poor condition and grounded some of its new Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab 787 Dreamliners for lack of spare parts.
When Tata regained control, the airline was "just in absolute shambles", its CEO Wilson told Reuters in a 2024 interview, noting that some of its planes hadn't had a product refresh since they were delivered in 2010-2011.
Air India, which has a 30% share of the domestic passenger market, has a fleet of 198 planes, of which 27 are 10-15 years old and 43 are more than 15 years old, the civil aviation ministry told parliament in March. Air India Express had 101 planes, with 37% of them more than 15 years old.
The plane that crashed on Thursday was 11 years old, according to Flightradar24.
Rival Indian airlines like IndiGo (INGL.NS), opens new tab operate newer planes.
Air India, which is part-owned by Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), opens new tab, has placed orders for 570 new jets in recent years and is in talks for dozens more.
It has even aggressively expanded its international flight network in the face of the fury of its passengers, who often take to social media to show soiled seats, broken arm rests, non-operational entertainment systems and dirty cabin areas.
It has also been ranked the worst airline for flight delays in Britain, where its departures were on average just under 46 minutes behind schedule in 2024, according to analysis of Civil Aviation Authority data by the PA news agency published in May.
It has also been reporting losses since at least fiscal 2019-20. In 2023-2024, it reported a net loss of $520 million on sales of $4.6 billion.
Before it can make any further progress on these problems, however, it faces the difficult task of investigating one of India's worst aviation disasters ever.
"This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India," CEO Wilson said in a video message.
"Investigations will take time."

Boeing experts and UK and US aviation officials join Air India crash investigation
A team of Boeing experts has flown out to offer assistance to the state-led investigation into the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, with UK and US officials also arriving in the city. The unexplained descent of the Boeing 787 plane immediately after takeoff has cast fresh shadows over the US aircraft manufacturer, although the well-established Dreamliner model has been in operation for more than a decade. Boeing's bosses have pulled out of next week's Paris airshow – traditionally an important shop window for aircraft manufacturers when major orders are announced. The company's chief executive, Kelly Ortberg, and Stephanie Pope, head of its commercial planes division, told staff in a message on Thursday evening that they had cancelled plans to attend the event 'so we can be with our team and focus on our customer and the investigation'. In a public statement, Ortberg said the Boeing team 'stands ready to support' the investigation being led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) as work continues to ascertain the cause of the crash. While issues such as pilot error, maintenance and bird strikes will all be likely avenues of exploration in the eventual investigation, investigators will be looking into what various experts said appeared to be a thrust or engine failure. Footage appeared to show the 787's landing gear apparently unretracted and, according to some accounts, the wing flaps in an unusual position for takeoff. India's aviation regulator has directed Air India to carry out additional maintenance and safety inspections on its 33-strong remaining Boeing 787 fleet, but not grounded the model. Boeing said it would defer to India's AAIB in line with the international aviation protocol known as annex 13, which also requires officials from the US to join the investigation due to it being the country of manufacture, and UK investigators due to the number of Britons onboard. Boeing will be joined by a team from GE Aerospace, which supplied the engines powering flight AI171. GE said it had cancelled a planned investor day next week, coinciding with the Paris show, and would send experts to India to help analyse the data from the 787. Graham Braithwaite, an aviation professor at Cranfield University, said: 'The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder will tell us a lot – assuming they are undamaged … and help the industry know how best to react in the short term.' Critical at this stage of the investigation would be 'making sure they don't lose evidence from the site during recovery efforts, or from the hangar, airport or training records', he said, adding: 'The team can involve specialists from the manufacturer or operator … but under very strict controls to ensure the independence of the investigation.'

‘Son of Concorde' bosses reveal over 600 routes could see flight times HALVED including 3.5-hour trips from UK to US

And a 3.5 hour trip between the UK and US is "absolutely" possible, the company told The Sun. 2 2 Boom Technology has been testing its XB-1 test jet which managed to fly faster than the speed of sound in January. One of the hurdles they've overcome from supersonic flying is the sound. The firm's jet, aptly dubbed the "Son of Concorde", has no audible sonic boom. A number of orders from the likes of American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines have already been made for Boom Technology's passenger jet model, Overture. President Trump recently signed an executive order effectively lifting a 52-year ban on civil supersonic flight over land in the US. "While Boom is pleased to see the regulatory pathways to supersonic flight clearing, Boom's business case has never been predicated on regulatory change," a spokesperson for Boom told The Sun. "There are over 600 global routes that are economically viable for supersonic flight—even without going supersonic over land. "Now that rules are being updated to allow boomless supersonic flight over land in the US, additional routes will benefit from speedups. "Boom's supersonic airliner, Overture, will fly transatlantic routes, such as New York to London, at its full cruising speed of Mach 1.7 over water – about twice as fast as today's conventional airliners." "Boomless Cruise enables Overture to fly at speeds up to Mach 1.3 over land without an audible boom - up to 50% faster than subsonic jets - reducing US coast-to-coast flight times by up to 90 minutes. "International routes with overland segments can also benefit from increased speeds." The company also revealed that Overture "remains on target" to get certification from relevant bodies including the FAA by the end of the decade so it can carry passengers. Bosses are aiming to roll out the first Overture in three years, and be flight testing in four. To accomplish that, they expect production of the first aircraft in the "Superfactory" to start next year. WHY DID CONCORDE FAIL? CONCORDE was the supersonic passenger jet considered the ultimate luxury in air travel. Air France and British Airways announced they would be retiring their fleet of Concorde planes on April 10, 2003. The plane had its first commercial flight on January 21, 1976, so was retired after 27 years of service and 50,000 flights. Several reasons led to the decision to retire Concorde. Air France and British Airways cited low passenger numbers and high maintenance costs. By the early noughties, the planes were outdated and expensive to run, despite being incredibly advanced when they were first introduced almost three decades previously. The 9/11 terrorist attack in 2001 majorly impacted passenger numbers, as people opted not to fly. Passenger numbers also fell after an Air France Concorde crashed just minutes after taking off from Paris in July 2000. The disaster killed all 109 people on board and four others on the ground. The plane ran over a small piece of metal on the runway, which burst a tyre and caused an engine to ignite. It was also the only aircraft in the British Airways fleet that required a flight engineer. Air France-KLM CEO voices confidence in Boeing 787
PARIS, June 13 (Reuters) - The head of Air France-KLM ( opens new tab voiced confidence in the Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab 787 Dreamliner as he expressed condolences to Air India and those affected by the deadly crash of a London-bound passenger jet in Ahmedabad on Thursday. "We still have confidence in the airplane; we have 34 787s in the KLM fleet," Ben Smith, CEO of the Franco-Dutch airline group, told the Paris Air Forum conference on Friday, noting that the tragic accident is under investigation. Speaking at the same event, Airbus ( opens new tab CEO Guillaume Faury also expressed condolences to families of victims of the crash, the worst aviation disaster in a decade. India's air accident agency is investigating the cause of the crash which killed more than 240 people and safety experts have cautioned it is too early to speculate on the causes. India's aviation regulator on Friday directed Air India to carry out safety inspections on its Boeing 787-8/9 fleet, an order showed on Friday.
